Headstrong is the debut album by the American actress and singer Ashley Tisdale. The album was released on February 6, 2007, in the United States via Warner Bros. Records, debuting at #5 on the Billboard 200 and selling 64,000 copies in the first week.[3] The album was certified Gold by the RIAA for shipments to U.S. retailers of 500,000 units.[4]
The album's first single was "Be Good to Me" which features rapper David Jassy and the second was "He Said She Said". "Not Like That", "Suddenly" and "So Much for You" were released in selected countries as the third, fourth and fifth singles from the album.
Album information
Tisdale started the recording process in fall 2006 in US, at the recording studios of Los Angeles, California entirely. She worked with important producers and songwriters J. R. Rotem, Kara Dioguardi, Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic), Evan Bogart, Bryan Todd amongst others. Tisdale co-wrote four songs for the album: "Not Like That", "Suddenly", "Over It" and the bonus track "It's Life". She recorded cover songs by artist Tata Young ("Don't Touch" - originally title "Zoom"), Sandy Molling ("Goin' Crazy" - originally title "All Eyes on You") and Sarah Hudson ("Unlove You").
Tisdale was gliding to release the album at the end of 2006 but for the recordings of her series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and promotions of High School Musical, the album was pushed back to the beginning of 2007 and was released on February 6, 2007 and the album debuted at number 5 in the Billboard 200, and sold almost 70,000 copies in the first week in the world, only released in United States and Canada. Then the album went down in the lists for the scanty promotion on behalf of Ashley since there were rolling the second part of High School Musical called High School Musical 2. On September 17, 2007, "He Said She Said" was re-released, the song turned radial success and with his music video it also managed to increase the sales of the album in United States, Latin America and Europe. On November 13, 2007 she released her first DVD called There's Something About Ashley and started her first tour Headstrong Tour Across America to promote the album.
Tisdale described Headstrong as a chance for her fans to get to know her better because on this album she is talking about what's happened in her life and what is personal to her.
I want people to know that I’m a real person, and that I’ve been through normal situations, like crushes and heartbreaks.
She was determined to record songs that touched her personally and that contained lyrics she could identify with. Tisdale also admitted that the album was called Headstrong because she is a pretty headstrong type of person.[5]
The album generated mixed reviews, receiving a 3/5 on the website Allmusic.[6] Oye! Awards (Premios Oye! in Spanish) nominated Tisdale in the category International Breakthrough Artist of 2007.[7] The album was nominated as #6 on "Album of The Year" by Billboard Readers' Choice.[8]
Promotion and touring
Tisdale promoted her album in the High School Musical: The Concert tour, performing in different countries and singing three songs from the album, "Headstrong", "We'll Be Together" and "He Said She Said".[9] Tisdale performed "Be Good to Me" and "He Said She Said in different American TV programs during the promotion of the album. Warner Bros. Records also posted a commercial for the album, which was in rotation on television. Later, Tisdale started her first solo tour called Headstrong Tour Across America in different malls of the United States.[10] The music video for "He Said She Said" promoted Eckō Red. She was due to perform "He Said She Said" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on December 21,[11] however the performance was postponed due her rhinoplasty procedure recuperation.[12] Tisdale also performed Suddenly along with her holiday single "Last Christmas" in the lighting of the "75th Rockefeller Christmas Tree".
The album was re-released for the first time in Christmas, 2007 in a Holiday Edition with the standard CD, the DVD There's Something About Ashley in a digipack format, and some other merchandise. The holiday edition became available again on 2008 for the holidays.[13] The album was re-released again in a limited Deluxe Edition format, released only in Germany with the DVD.[14]
Some promotional singles were released from the album. The songs "Goin' Crazy" and "Headstrong" were released as exclusive singles on Radio Disney,[15] "We'll Be Together" was released as a promo single to promote the DVD High School Musical: The Concert.
In October 2008, was released a German version of the "Be Good to Me"'s music video, with some behind the scenes being included. Also, the version used is the rap-version and the song was finally released as an official single on Germany on October 24, 2008.[16]
Critical reception
A review for All music said that "Headstrong's sound is much more mature than the soundtrack's teen pop-meets-musicals vibe, incorporating heavy hip-hop beats, dancehall's call-and-response, Middle Eastern elements, and other mid-2000s pop music trends into the Disney pop sound."[17]
A review for Blender stated that Tisdale "doesn’t import much of her character’s pushy spunk in this transition from Disney to dance-pop."[18]
Jamie Ross of Wild Life said: "It is hard to ignore a good pop album. There is just something about a song's dance-ability that brings out the best moods and moves in a person. Most of these albums, however, are dragged down by the ballads usually scattered throughout. This is the case with Ashley Tisdale's first solo release, Headstrong."[19]
A reviewer for Commonsense Media called the lyrics "family-safe, but unsubstantial, flirting around the edges of sexual innuendo on a couple of tracks", and Tisdale "comes across as cute, fun, and buoyant -- anything but headstrong". The music is, however, "rhythmic and catchy".[20]
