Revision as of 23:37, 27 March 2009
The 39 Clues is a series of fantasy adventure books, the first of which, The Maze of Bones, written by Percy Jackson and the Olympians author Rick Riordan, deals with the death of fictional character Grace Cahill. The grandmother of the main characters Amy and Dan, Grace Cahill, dies and leaves her relatives a will that invites them to search the globe for thirty-nine clues that would unlock the power to the Cahill family's hidden power. Upon completing the offer, the winners are to become the "richest, most important people in history." Riordan will also cover the main story arc, although a team of authors has been assigned, each author to write one or more of the following books in the series. The series is unique in that it will allow readers to compete online and through a trading card game to win prizes if you are a teen or under. Along with writing the first book, Riordan will continue to oversee the progressive story arc. The books include real, famous characters. The other books (in order) will be written by Gordon Korman, Peter Lerangis, Jude Watson, Patrick Carman, Jude Watson (again), Peter Lerangis (again), Gordon Korman (again), Linda Sue Park, and Margaret Peterson Haddix.

The Cahill family
The Cahill family is split into four branches, the Lucians, the Ekaterina, the Janus, and the Tomas. The four branches are named after the four children of Gideon and Olivia Cahill.
The Lucian branch, founded by Luke Cahill, are the descendants of the world's greatest leaders and spies, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin and Sidney Reilly (The Ace of Spies). Lucians allegedly control secret bases such as Area 51. They also have a base in Paris, France. In the books Ian and Natalie Kabra are Lucians along with Irina Spasky. Their symbol is two snakes wrapped around a sword.
The Ekaterina branch, founded by Katherine Cahill, are the descendants of famous scientists and inventors, such as Abraham Lincoln, Marie Curie, Bill Gates, and Howard Carter. They are fierce enemies with the Tomas branch. They are responsible for the Bermuda Triangle and the Loch Ness Monster. They supposedly have Cairo, Egypt as a base. Alistair Oh is an Ekaterina. Their symbol is a dragon.
The Janus branch, founded by Jane Cahill, is made up of the world's most famous and talented artists, such as the fictional rap star Jonah Wizard, his mother, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Pablo Picasso, and Steven Spielberg. Thomas Jefferson was asked to write the Declaration of Independence because he was a Janus. The Janus have a base in Venice, Italy and Hollywood. Their symbol is a wolf.
The Tomas branch, founded by Thomas Cahill, is made up of famous explorers and discoverers. Many athletes are said to belong to the Tomas Branch. Heinrich Henrichson is a Tomas agent who loves to take risks. Annie Oakley, the "sharpest shooter in the West," George Washington, and David Beckham are also part of this branch. They supposedly have Tokyo, Japan as a base. The Holts are the only Tomas in the books. They are fierce enemies with the Ekaterina branch. Their symbol is a bear.
The Starlings and Amy & Dan Cahill are the only ones not yet identified in any one group, although it is rumored that Amy is an Ekaterina and Dan is a Tomas.
The novels
Interactivity
The ten novels in the 39 Clues series will each contain real-life clues for readers to decipher. For example, in the first book, several of the page numbers are replaced with a simple "A=1" cipher, revealing a hint to Mission 1 on the website. In books 2 & 3, this occurs again, only this time, the ciphers are "A=B" and a substitution code involving alchemical symbols, respectively. The key to it is opposite the inside cover of the third book.
Book covers
The covers of the books tend to contain elements from the following and preceding books. On the cover of The Maze of Bones shards of glass appear on the right of the cover and One False Note features a cover adorned with glass shards. Similarly, the left side of the cover to One False Note has skulls (which feature prominently on the cover of The Maze of Bones) and the right side has a single sword, supposedly leading to The Sword Thief. However, there is nothing on the right side of "The Sword Thief".
Book 1: The Maze of Bones
The Maze of Bones is the first book in the series. It was published on September 9th, 2008. Written by Rick Riordan, the first book covers the death of Grace Cahill and the aftermath of her will. Seven teams take up the challenge to find the 39 Clues, including Amy and Dan Cahill, Ian and Natalie Kabra, Alistair Oh, Irina Spasky, Jonah and Broderick Wizard, Ned, Ted, and Sinead Starling, and the Holt family. They start with the first clue of the 39 clues, however, a sonic detonator explosion forced the Starling triplets to withdraw from the race. There are also mysterious sightings of a "man in black".
Book 2: One False Note
One False Note is the second book of the series. It is written by Gordon Korman (who will also write book #8) and was released on December 2, 2008.[1] Amy, Dan, and their au pair, Nellie, follow the second clue to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna, Austria. The book ends with the fate of the Kabra siblings unknown as they lay unconscious in a museum displaying the collection of Fidelio Racco. Dan and Amy Cahill are on to the next clue.
Book 3: The Sword Thief
The Sword Thief is the third book in the series. It is written by Peter Lerangis (who will also write book #7) and was released on March 3, 2009.[1] In the book, Amy and Dan track the life of one of the world's most fearsome warriors in Tokyo, in a bid to uncover whether he is a Cahill, and if he possessed a Clue. Alistair Oh, on some unknown promise that he kept to Amy and Dan's parents, helps the children but fakes his death at the end of the book. Also, on the 39 clues website, you may read the first two chapters of the book.
Book 4: Beyond the Grave
Written by Jude Watson (who will write book #6), the name of the fourth book is Beyond the Grave, possibly having to do with Howard Carter, his discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb and the rivalry between the Tomases and the Ekats . The book is set to be released June 2nd, 2009.This book will have weird moments between some of the Cahill branches.
Book 5
The Title of Book 5 is unknown, but it is to be written by Patrick Carman. Book five will be released on August 11, 2009. The only known fact about it besides the author and the release date is that the cover will be orange in color. It is also rumored to reveal Amy and Dan's branch and in it, Dan and Amy will possibly encounter the Madrigals.
Book 6
The Title of Book 6 is unknown, but it is to be written by Jude Watson. Book six will be released on November 3, 2009.In this book, it is rumored that this book will have a new member joining in the race to find the 39 clues.
Book 7
The Title of Book 7 is unknown, but it is to be written by Peter Lerangis. Book seven will be released on February 2, 2010.
Book 8

Planned films
Steven Spielberg acquired film rights to the series in June 2008. DreamWorks CEO Stacey Snider believes the books can amount to three or four films. Spielberg and Scholastic Media president Deborah Forte will produce the series,[2] while Spielberg is interested in directing the first film. It is expected to come out around 2011. Jeff Nathanson was hired to write in September 2008.[3]
