Montero (stylized in all caps[1]) is the upcoming debut studio album by American rapper, singer, and songwriter Lil Nas X, set to be released on September 17, 2021, through Columbia Records.[1] The album was announced in a 2019 interview, with the title being announced in March 2021, following the release of the single "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)". The album was preceded by the release of three singles: "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)", "Sun Goes Down", and "Industry Baby".
Background
In an interview with Angie Martinez conducted in August 2019 after the release of his debut EP 7, Lil Nas X revealed that he was working on his first full-length album, noting that it was going to be more personal.[2] On March 26, 2021, following the release of "Montero (Call Me by Your Name)", Lil Nas X announced the title of the album—Montero—on Twitter, along with a summer release date.[3] On June 29, he uploaded a trailer for the album to YouTube. Inspired by the opening sequences of films by Marvel Studios, it includes various clips from the music videos of his singles.[4] The album's release date was announced through another teaser video uploaded to YouTube on August 26.[5] The video, acting as a continuation of the music video for "Industry Baby" (2021), includes a preview of a new song off the album.[6]
Promotion
On August 23, 2021, a partnership with Taco Bell to promote the album was announced, with Lil Nas X playing a role in "menu innovations".[7]
