Moving to the other side of the planet later this week and won't have my apartment for two weeks. Ian.thomson (talk) 02:22, 12 March 2019 (UTC) |

I should have announced this sooner but it just kinda crept up on me. Between various issues (less prep time at work, trying to affordably diet and exercise better), I've just not had enough energy when I'm home beyond what I need to get ready for the next work day or upcoming week. |

I've bought some sources to expand articles on Goetic demons, though. I may work some on that without fully coming off of the Wikibreak. Ian.thomson (talk) 23:10, 13 August 2021 (UTC) |

:Hi Ian - we haven't interacted much, so sorry for coming out of the blue, but I wanted to tell you that when I was in my 'I have an account, but I mostly just read stuff without commenting' stage, your contributions were a real inspiration for me to actually get involved. You were one of the most active editors on some of the pages I was interested in, and I saw your name come up time and again attached to sensible, rational comments. So, yeah - I'm a fan. |
|||
:Anyone deserves and can self-award a break whenever they want to; I'd suggest that you have definitely earned one if you feel like it, and should take as long as you need/want. If you want to do some article-writing without engaging with admin stuff (or anything else) you're still doing good work - thank you! ::I am going to pile on here as another "out of the blue" editor. I don't think we have ever interacted directly at all but you have certainly provided value to me as an editor (and no doubt to Wikipedia as a whole) and that does not go away because you have other things to focus on whether that shift in focus is temporary or permanent. Now go get some exercise! :) S0091 (talk) 21:32, 15 August 2021 (UTC) |

I'm sure that you've never made a mistake in life; however, unlike you, I am not perfect. When trying to correct the syntax of a quotation, I accidentally edited an older version of the page. You will note that many edits that were inadvertently removed were THOSE I MADE to correct and add sources. They also include issues Doug and I agree about. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Is it legal for readers to download images from Wikipedia articles and use them for personal uses, such as prints, desktop wallpaper, or editing? Asked another editor but got no response.2600:1:F1A8:AC53:F50F:EE64:20F7:849E (talk) 15:55, 13 April 2019 (UTC) |

:I'm afraid I'd have to say "depends on the image." If there's a fair use rationale, there's a potential argument that you're infringing trademark for printing that image instead of buying the official print or something. If it's public domain or under some creative commons licenses (read the license), it's probably OK. |
|||
</table> |
|||
:That said, desktop wallpaper is probably always safe. No corporation has enough time or money to waste taking someone to court to challenge the fair use claim for their desktop. Ian.thomson (talk) 11:07, 15 April 2019 (UTC) |

; Why have I received this message? |
|||
: All administrators are receiving it. |
|||
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki. |
|||
; What prompted you to send this message? |
|||
: Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account. |
|||
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed. |
|||
; What do I need to do? |
|||
: Only to follow the instructions in this message. |

:# Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable). |

:# Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers. |

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help. |

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised. |

Hi Ian. I believe I have blocked an IP sock of EditorE. Two other editors agree that it is most likely them (Ss112 and wumbolo). However they are claiming innocence. Out of an abundance of caution and as you were the blocking admin, I was wondering if you'd care to have a look. -Ad Orientem (talk) 00:36, 26 May 2019 (UTC) |
|||
:Ad Orientem I wouldn't believe their claims for a second. They're editing the same sorts of articles and doing exactly the same things EditorE did—down to naming subheadings of charts sections just "Weekly" instead of "Weekly charts", which might seem trivial to others but is something I noticed EditorE did regularly and I had not really seen before. Also, they have made several edits to one of EditorE's favourite topics, Black Origami . Thanks to Wikipedia, I got to see alt-right talking points identified as such well before they became a part of mainstream conversation. Offline individuals who I trusted and respected started hinting at these talking points more and more. Pretty much every attempt to show them the source and goal of those ideas only stalled things at best. When politicians aren't stirring up the alt-right, they're defending those who stir them up, or defending those who defend the pandering, or saying we need to cooperate with those who are ultimately defending the alt-right. And the number of users I've seen hounded for saying "we shouldn't allow Nazis on the site because it's antithetical to this site's goals" is dismaying. Shame on the shriveled, minuscule, impotent souls whose petty grudges push them to defend fascism just to score points against someone. And if you're upset at my characterization of you as such, you're the one who put the shoe on, Cinderella. |

:Yeah, had the impression it was something like that. Hey, upon reporting a vandal, I noticed that you placed an {Undisclosed paid} tag on Infopulse page. I'm not a very active contributor and do watch this page, contributing to it and a few others from time to time, as I do watch a very limited amount of others like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II:_The_Sith_Lords. |
|||
So, there has also been an ad tag on Infopulse page since March, but I still didn't have enough time to rewrite the text in a more neutral way. Can you suggest what would be my next steps as to edit the text there to remove both tags? |

Ian.thomson I do work with this company, managing a mobile development project for them. However, I'm editing this wiki page on volunteering basis, in my own free time and don't get payment for it. This page was in awful state and completely neglected before I started editing it back in 2016. I decided to contribute what I know and what I could about the company, and since then I support it with some minor updates here and there. Half a year ago (in March) another wiki admin placed 'advert' tag on it, and I simply didn't have enough time to tone it down, cause I'm only editing it in my free time. I'm not a very active contributor, and only write on specific topics I'm deeply interest in, even on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/user/Dimmmkko/) cause I'm a bit fed up with emails I have to write daily, and on wiki I prefer reading instead =P So what should be my next steps then? How do I classify my relationship to the company, if I work with them but I'm writing out of my own initiative? |
|||
EDIT: I've also noticed that another, more advanced user of wiki just made some nice edits to the Ukrainian page, making the article much more neutral and encyclopedic. E.g., will it work if I follow his edits and transfer them to English page? |

:Ian.thomson That's where things are a bit more complicated. I work WITH this company, not for it. Neither I'm paid by this company at all. Company I work for and Infopulse only joined forces together to work on a mobile development project for a public non-profit organization. We are not even getting profit from it, cause it's a kind of charity/promotional project. Now, I only picked this article back in 2016, cause information in it was very outdated, and since I contributed my own time to it, now I feel responsible for it. That's it. == White Privilege == |
|||
Hey, you're rather correct about China having a distinct preference for white foreigners; a lot of China-work forums had long-running posts where black expats would swap warnings, stories and tips for dealing with racism that I almost never faced. However, treating white privilege within the sense of the "backpack" framework makes that particular colorist hierarchy slightly out of scope; certainly enough for tedious racists and anti-social-science tendentious types to make the article talk into one of those tedious never-ending arguments that have me stepping back from Wikipedia. Anyway, I am disinclined to reply at Talk:White Privilege as part of my attempt to reduce the extent I let myself get dragged into fights on Wikipedia, but I thought dropping you a note might at least be called for. == Judaism's Perspective of Jesus and Christianity == |

Thank you for trying to edit, revert and allow Judaism's perspectives on Jesus and Christianity ["those sentences are about Judaism's views on Christian beliefs, not on Christianity's views of Christian beliefs"] in the article, but it looks like they removed all of it from the lede while they allowed some to remain in the Jewish Perspective section. And thank you also for defending religions other than Christianity and restoring [or trying to] information on other faith's denial of the divinity of Jesus. The Rejection of Jesus article looks like it needs a lot of work, which I hope I can do in the near future. Very pitiful that so many Christians and worshipers of Jesus can't handle Judaism's views of Christianity/Jesus, as well as Judaism's central tenets/fundamentals on the nature of God, the Messiah in Judaism, etc., simply because they are diametric opposites and completely different. So many Christians have enraged reactions when these core principles are shown. They might laugh off annoying atheists, Mormons, Muslims, Rastafarians, Hindus and Buddhists, but they fume at Judaism. Maybe you are able to explain why people, who are completely rational in other aspects of their lives, cognitively shut down when Judaism's views are shown to them.ShivatTzion (talk) 01:38, 5 February 2020 (UTC) |

:I'll put it this way: |
|||
:I believe in a singular Absolute known to us as a transcendent, personal, and immanent Trinity, who experienced Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection as Jesus of Nazareth. I believe we are made in the Image of God (which, along with the Incarnation, is the source of my humanism) and that the Bible is divinely inspired but that humans cannot understand without interpretation so one should favor whatever interpretation helps one to love God with all their heart and love others as they love themselves. (It's also more convenient if one distinguishes between their own understanding of the text and the likely historical interpretation of texts, the latter determined by scholarship). If someone wants to argue that, despite or because of those beliefs, I'm not Christian then I neither understand nor am interested in whatever they're calling Christianity (and I say that as someone who holds the same fascination for cults, superstitions, and horrific doctrines that horror movie fans have for their flicks). |
|||
:Baptist beliefs historically varied quite a bit between congregations. About the only way to safely describe Baptists is "Congregationalists who insist on practicing believer's baptism through submersion in water for whatever reason." We are ecuminical anarchists, though some more vocal members have forgotten that. That said, that latter group (along with growing up with love of Catholics and Catholicism, even if I have problems with certain persons and organizations under that label) is leaving me more and more inclined to just saying I'm an ecuminist. Runways and pubic hairstyles aren't related in any way. |
|||
This is just harrassing users, playing with them and calling them dumbasses |
|||
It's humiliating and degrading |
|||
to see a boy or a girl's body exposed this way and trying to toy around with these |
|||
simple notions and saying that by principle wikipedia doesn't censor this shit. |
|||
Young kids see this and think it's OK to play the same way as well, and it's not, it's repulsive. |
|||
Encouraging others to expose or to humiliate another person's body is repulsive |

and degrading. Trying to call it sexual empowerment is even worse (and sicker). |

There is no context for this (shit)! (sorry for the outburst), but |

I feel that strongly about it. |

:ACxcv "Runway" is a style of pubic waxing. Read the article. It doesn't encourage anyone to do anything. |
|||
:Kids who are going to peer-pressure or bully don't need our article to do that, they'll do that on their own. Kids who are informed about such matters are less likely to be peer-pressured or bullied into doing something sexual, while kids who are uninformed are easier to be lied to and thus peer-pressured. |

To-do: red plastic gas cans
These things are ubiquitous in the US (or at least any part I've been to) but we don't have an article on them. Like, I've only ever seen three consistent models (each different sizes of the same basic pattern) and looking online, it looks like those are the only three models that have been allowed since the gas crisis in the '70s.[original research?]
I've got a lot of other things on my plate, but I think these might be sufficient sources for someone (me, anyone else, whoever) to write up an article on them:
- News article
- News article
- News article
- News article
- News article
- Gov't regulation document
- Gov't regulation document
- Gov't regulation document
- "Non-Profit" run by the companies that make these things (haven't actually read through and found specific pages yet)
The last source definitely doesn't establish WP:NOTE and I'd normally be wary of anyone insisting that it be used. Still, I think they also discuss regulatory info and maybe manufacturing history. Given the news sources (all of which are "oh shit, these things are exploding again" and "please stop doing things to make them explode"), I think it's safe to say that its inclusion probably won't amount to promotion.
I'm not sure that this would accomplish much more than a stub, at least with my usual "summarize, paraphrase, combine overlapping statements" approach. Ian.thomson (talk) 22:21, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
- I saw this up in your table of contents. Those damned things are a colossal nuisance , I finally found a brand that allows better control of flow and doesn't end up slopping gas all over the lawnmower, generator, or tiller. The mesh screen appears nowadays to be broadly used. They also come in yellow for diesel and blue for kerosene. Acroterion (talk) 01:19, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
- I am remembering my dad using blue barrels made of the same material for kerosene back when we had a space heater but yeah, I do see the same design in blue and yellow. (I think he got them on sale, I'm not sure I've seen them in stores ever again, and boy hell were they trouble to get rid of). Guess I need to look for sources on the diesel and kerosene ones and figure out what the industry name is for this family of cans. They're not Jerrycans (which is where gas can currently redirects): they're broader, have a handle on the back, and the stamping on the sides is just embossed warning text (not a structural feature). (I'm sure you know but other talk page watchers who haven't opened the links might be wondering why I want to reinvent the Jerrycan).
- There's another gas can design that I'm seeing, "Safety gas cans," which I suppose needs to be written about as well. Basically squat half-capsule mini-barrels with a handle and spout on the flatly rounded top. They're why I haven't just made "gas can" about the red plastic ones, since we really need "gas can" to be a disambig between the standard plastic, the Jerrycan, and the safety gas cans. Thanks for helping me realize that. Ian.thomson (talk) 01:38, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
- I'm accumulating a museum of gas cans. I got two of the safety cans after squirrels started eating the plastic ones. After that generation of squirrels died they seem to have stopped munching plastic and confine themselves to the house, so now I have some plastic ones that are easier to handle, and a yellow one in case we run out of heating oil - I can get off-road diesel and use that in a pinch. I think fuel container is a safe generic term. Acroterion (talk) 01:49, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
- I guess maybe a redirect to Bin bag would suffice? Ian.thomson (talk) 23:10, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
Wikibreak
I should have announced this sooner but it just kinda crept up on me. Between various issues (less prep time at work, trying to affordably diet and exercise better), I've just not had enough energy when I'm home beyond what I need to get ready for the next work day or upcoming week.
I've bought some sources to expand articles on Goetic demons, though. I may work some on that without fully coming off of the Wikibreak. Ian.thomson (talk) 23:10, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Ian - we haven't interacted much, so sorry for coming out of the blue, but I wanted to tell you that when I was in my 'I have an account, but I mostly just read stuff without commenting' stage, your contributions were a real inspiration for me to actually get involved. You were one of the most active editors on some of the pages I was interested in, and I saw your name come up time and again attached to sensible, rational comments. So, yeah - I'm a fan.
- Anyone deserves and can self-award a break whenever they want to; I'd suggest that you have definitely earned one if you feel like it, and should take as long as you need/want. If you want to do some article-writing without engaging with admin stuff (or anything else) you're still doing good work - thank you! Girth Summit (blether) 23:21, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
- I am going to pile on here as another "out of the blue" editor. I don't think we have ever interacted directly at all but you have certainly provided value to me as an editor (and no doubt to Wikipedia as a whole) and that does not go away because you have other things to focus on whether that shift in focus is temporary or permanent. Now go get some exercise! :) S0091 (talk) 21:32, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi Ian.thomson! You're receiving this notification because you were previously listed on the AFC's participants list, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over 6 months. Because of your inactivity, you have been removed from the list. If you would like to regain access to the AFCH script, you can do so at any time by visiting WT:AFCP. Thank you for your work at AFC, and if you start editing Wikipedia again we hope you will rejoin us. Message delivered to you with love by Yapperbot :) | Is this wrong? WP:AFC Helper News
Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template db-afc-move has been created - this template is similar to db-move when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
New administrator activity requirement
The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Trying to come back
Every two weeks, when my email login expires and I have to log back in, I get the notification that "I" have too many failed logins and need to reset my password. Even after almost a year of inactivity, this is still the case. To the asshole(s) doing that, you could have made bank on crypto by now, and I'm saying that as someone who thinks all cryptocurrency is a scam.
On top of that, over the past decade, I've spent half of it on the other side of the world from my hometown. Though this has just slowed the rate at which I was growing tired, it hasn't stopped it.
I'm fucking sick of it all. I'd say "Nazis can all go to hell" but that's like telling shit to stink. Wait, no, at least shit has enough sense that it doesn't need to be told to do that.
I do want to come back. I'm aware that we'll never "go back to normal," that there is not and will never be a "new normal," that normal was always a monsterous lie, and that order is nothing but the local flavor of chaos. That thinking is actually kinda why I got along here as well as I did.
I do enjoy non-contentious admin work. Going through new user names and blocking obvious troll or spam accounts before anyone else can even report them is actually fun.
I have a bunch of new sources for Goetia related articles as well as sources for the Shams al-Ma'arif article.
I'm tired of pretending I prioritize WP:5P over WP:NONAZIS. I know enough about the site to know that saying that's going to bite me on the ass and that that that's not going to work well with my other plans to return. Going to be thinking about it but I'm certain there's no outcome I'm going to be happy with. Ian.thomson (talk) 09:36, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Ian - I came across your username just now while reading an old thread, and realised I hadn't seen you around in a while. I came here, and read this. All I can say is this: when I was a newb, you were one of the people who inspired me. I saw lots of sensible, level-headed comments and actions from you, and I thought 'Hey, Wikipedia is a little bit of the internet where there are good people running things. Maybe I could get involved here.' Do what's best for you, of course, but I wanted you to know that you made a difference, for me at least. Girth Summit (blether) 23:44, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
