David H. Gorski is an American associate professor of surgery at Wayne State University[1] and a surgical oncologist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute specializing in breast cancer surgery.[2] Gorski is a critic of alternative medicine and the anti-vaccination movement. He is the author of a blog called Respectful Insolence[3] and the managing editor of the Internet web site, Science Based Medicine.[4]
Education
Gorski completed a fellowship at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and received a PhD in Cellular Physiology from Case Western Reserve University.[5]
Career
Gorski was an associate professor of Surgery at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ, as well as a member of the Joint Graduate Program in Cell & Developmental Biology at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ and The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.[6]
He later became a professor of surgery at Wayne State University and a surgical oncologist [7] at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute[8] where he serves as the Medical Director of the Alexander J. Walt Comprehensive Breast Center.[9] According to the Wayne State University web site, his research concerns the transcriptional regulation of vascular endothelial cell phenotype, as well as the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors in breast cancer.[8] He is the cancer liaison physician for the American College of Surgeons Committee on Cancer.[10] He has made an analysis of epidemiological studies.[7]
Gorski is a Founding Fellow, on the Board of Directors, and Corporate Treasurer at theInstitute for Science in Medicine.[11] He is Managing Editor of the James Randi Educational Foundation. [citation needed] In 2007 Gorski received the Advanced Clinical Research Award in Breast Cancer from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.[12]
Gorski wrote a blog called Respectful Insolence, at the Internet site called ScienceBlogs under the pen name "Orac".[3] In 2008 Gorski dropped his pen name and became the web site's managing editor.[4] According to Gorski, members of the anti-vaccine blog Age of Autism wrote to the board of directors at Wayne State University and asked that he be prevented from blogging.[13]
Gorski has participated in conferences for skeptics such as The Amazing Meeting,[14][15][16][17] the Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism[18] and the 2010 Lorne Trottier Public Science Symposium.[19] and CSICON[20]
In 2010 Gorski was interviewed by D.J. Grothe for a podcast[21] and in 2012 by WPRR Public Reality Radio's Ed Brayton.[22]
Gorski has criticized the American Medical Student Association's co-sponsorship of International Integrative Medicine Day and was described by David H. Freedman as "one of the more prickly anti-alternative-medicine warriors."[23]
