Djesse Vol. 3is the fourth studio album by English musician, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Jacob Collier. It is the third album in Collier’s quadruple album series, “Djesse”. It was released on 14 August 2020, and features Jessie Reyez, T-Pain, Kimbra, Tank and The Bangas, Daniel Caesar, Mahalia, Ty Dolla $ign, Kiana Ledé, Tori Kelly & Rapsody. The album was self-produced by Collier, at his home in London.
The album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 63rd Grammy Awards[2] , alongside two further nominations: Best R&B Performance (for “All I Need”), and Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals (for “He Won’t Hold You”).
Background
On 29 October 2018, during Collier's live stream that announced the Djesse series, Collier said the third volume "is when things get very real indeed" and described the album as a "kind of crazy electronics thing".[3]
Five "beatsketches" were posted by Collier between 4 and 16 March 2020. Collier described them on his website as each being "about a minute long, taken from the edges of the album-making process – a collection of crazy sounds, little canvases, windows into universes I have visited over the course of my Vol. 3 creating time".[4] The five beatsketches are titled "Bird Scuff",[5] "What's Impossible",[6] "Dreamer",[7] "Train to Saskatoon",[8] and "Believe in Love".[9]
On 17 March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Collier postponed the 2020 leg of his Djesse World Tour. In the same statement he said that he was working to finish Djesse Vol. 3.[10] The album was released just under 5 months later, on 14 August 2020.[11]
Singles and music videos
Collier released five singles and six music videos for Djesse Vol. 3.
The first single, "Time Alone with You" which features Daniel Caesar, was released 29 November 2019.[12][13][14] The music video for "Time Alone With You", released 5 December 2019, directed and edited by Collier himself, features Caesar and Collier together.[15]
The second single, "In My Bones", featuring Kimbra and Tarriona "Tank" Ball, was released 25 March 2020.[16] The music video for "In My Bones" was released the same day as the single. Kimbra and Tarriona "Tank" Ball both appear in the video.[17]
On 14 May, Collier released the third single, "All I Need", which features Ty Dolla Sign and Mahalia.[18][19] The music video for "All I Need", was released on 17 June 2020.[20] Tee Ken Ng directed and animated the video, which is presented as a series of circular papers that, when spun on a record player, appear to create a moving picture, similar to a zoetrope. Animations of these videos are shown along with video edited polaroid pictures.
On 10 July, Collier released the fourth single, "He Won't Hold You", featuring Rapsody.[21][22] Daniel Bruson animated and edited the music video for "He Won't Hold You".[23] The entire video has a hand-drawn aesthetic, as it is made up of over 1200 hand-painted images by Bruson.[24]
The fifth single, "Running Outta Love", featuring Tori Kelly, was released on 31 July.[25][26]
The fifth music video "Sleeping On My Dreams" was released on 17 August, three days after the album's release. It was filmed in a single day in January 2020, and features Collier dancing with a group of nine professional dancers in person.[27]
A lyric video for "Count the People", directed by Diego Huacuja and Jacob Collier, was released on 26 August 2020.[28]
Television and other appearances
Singles from Djesse Vol. 3 were shown on various late night shows before the album's release, and came with their own videos. On 26 May 2020, Collier appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, releasing an at home version of "All I Need" with Jacob playing traditional instruments and singing, as well as using noises from household items, all in his bathroom.[29] Mahalia and Ty Dolla Sign make appearances as well. Collier made yet another video of himself performing the song from home (again featuring Mahalia) for the BBC's show Later... with Jools Holland.[30] A version of "Running Outta Love" was shown on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert with Collier and Tori Kelly performing.[31]
On 9 July 2020, a from-home Tiny Desk Concert by Collier was released on NPR. In the 16-minute set, Collier performs "All I Need", "Time Alone With You", and "He Won't Hold You". To make the video, he filmed himself performing the set four times (once on bass, once on drums, once on keyboard, and once on melodica and percussion, with all four singing); the four videos were then edited together along with the audio to make it look as though four versions of Collier were performing the concert together.[32]
