"I'm with You" is the third single from Avril Lavigne's debut album, Let Go. Released in 2002/2003, the single peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lavigne's third top-ten single. The single also peaked at number one in Canada, number seven in the United Kingdom and number one in Mexico. "I'm with You" was not released in Australia. The song is best known for establishing Lavigne's status as a bonafide vocal performer. Although critics had accepted her place in the music industry following the chart performance of her preceeding single, "Sk8er Boi", they still dismissed her voice, and countered that she could only sing uptempos with heavy production to cover her supposedly weak voice. With the relatively simple production of "I'm with You", Lavigne's voice was given room to show off her vocal strength, and to silence critics who had once questioned her vocal ability.
Song information
The song was written by The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, and Graham Edwards) and Lavigne, and produced by The Matrix. In this sparsely produced, but dark and brooding ballad, Lavigne finds herself with a severe case of depression on a cold night, causing her to question her sanity, and be confused by life. Like many depressed people, she wishes that somebody out of nowhere would find her and come take her home to resolve her issues. Realizing that she should take some initiative, Lavigne looks for a face or anyone she might know, but there are no footsteps or sounds to indicate a savior, only the sound of empty rain. Desperate for anyone at this point, Lavigne begs, "Take me by the hand, take me somewhere new. I don't know who you are but I... I'm with you..."
