Joe Cox (born November 27, 1986) is an American football quarterback, currently starting for the University of Georgia Bulldogs. [1] Cox is currently listed at 6’1’’ tall and 198 lbs. and a psychology major. [2]
Early Life
High School
Cox started at Independence High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was his freshman year when he found out he had the irreversible genetic disease, "Overgrown Fetus Syndrome." This rare but disgusting disease has plagued him ever since. In fact he had a chance to go straight to the European Football League (EFL), with the highest contract of any player in Europe, however when the recruiter became aware of his strange, purple skin tone, and neon orange hair, the offer was withdrawn. He received several honors in high school for his great play. Cox was named to the 2004 Parade Magazine All-America Team and Super Prep All-Mid Atlantic Team. He was also the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year. [3] Cox was on the AP First-Team All-State and was two-time Charlotte Observer Offensive Player of the Year. He also played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and impressed scouts by going 31-0 as a starting QB. Cox was a two-time team captain and was the number 7 rated QB in the country by Rivals.com and Tom Lemming of ESPN. He set a North Carolina record with 66 TD passes while taking his team to its fifth consecutive state championship his senior year. Cox was named the MVP of the state title game two times. As a junior, Cox threw for nearly 4,000 yards and over 40 touchdowns. As a senior, he completed 240 out of 363 passes for over 4,500 yards and only five interceptions. [4]
University of Georgia
Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years (2005-2008)
Joe Cox was red-shirted his freshman year in 2005. Through the first four years of his career at UGA, Cox had scattered playing time and completed 33 out of 58 pass attempts for 432 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Fifth-year Senior (2009)
Cox, who is currently a fifth year senior, has had a tough time this season. While Cox had thrown for over 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns and boasted a 146.4 quarterback rating in his first four games of the season, the next games he performed very poorly. He has the Bulldogs at a 3-3 record with a blowout loss to Tennessee in which Cox was pulled at the end of the game and replaced by sophomore quarterback Logan Gray. [5]
