Revision as of 12:06, 8 June 2012
Lin Jun (Chinese: 林俊 Lín Jùn) (born 30 December 1978 in Wuhan[1]) also known as Justin Lin,[2] originally from Wuhan,[3][4][5] was an international student and an undergraduate in the engineering and computer science faculty at Concordia University.[6] Lin had been studying in Montreal since July 2011.[3][5] Lin moved into a Griffintown-area apartment with a roommate on May 1.[5] He was last seen on May 24, 2012,[3][5][7] and reported missing by a friend on May 29.[5][7]
Murder
On May 25, 2012[7] an 11-minute video (known as "1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick"),[8][9][10][11][12] which Canadian investigators believe may have depicted the murder of Lin, was posted on Internet gore websites depicting a tied-up man being repeatedly stabbed with an ice pick and a kitchen knife, then dismembered[9], followed by acts of necrophilia.[8][13] Canadian authorities were reportedly able to obtain a "raw" version of the video, and subsequently provided conflicting statements as to whether acts of cannibalism had been performed.[13][14] During the video, the 1987 New Order song True Faith plays in the background.[3][15] On May 26, an attorney living in the US State of Montana attempted to report the video and its contents to Toronto Police, his Sheriff's department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, but it was initially dismissed by officials who said the video was "almost certainly fake — that special effects were very good" and refused to allow a link to the video to be sent to them.[16][10][17] Police later confirmed the video as authentic[3][18] and "have all the reasons to believe" that the victim, an Asian male, is the same one whose body parts were sent to Ottawa.[3][19]
On May 29, 2012, a package containing a human foot was delivered to the national headquarters of the Conservative Party of Canada, which made headlines around the world. The package, which was opened by Jenni Byrne, director of political operations for the party, was stained with blood and had a foul smell. Later that day, a package containing a human hand was discovered by the Ottawa Police in a Canada Post processing facility, addressed to the Liberal Party, and a suitcase containing a decomposing torso was discovered in the Snowdon area of Montreal by a janitor, left in a garbage pile near the apartment building where Magnotta lived.[20][21]
On May 30, 2012, it was confirmed that the body parts belonged to the same individual, later identified as Lin Jun.[5][6][3] The suspect in the case was quickly identified as Magnotta, who had by then fled. A warrant was issued by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) for his arrest, later upgraded to a Canada-wide warrant by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP),[22] launching a national manhunt. Initially, police were unable to identify Lin as the victim and had not at that time recovered all parts of the body.[23]
On May 31, 2012, Interpol issued a Red Notice for Magnotta at the request of Canadian authorities, and his name and photo were displayed prominently for several days at the top of the homepage of the Interpol website. The Red Notice requested that Magnotta be provisionally arrested pending extradition back to Canada by any Interpol member state.[24] It was later confirmed that he left Canada on May 26[25] and went to Paris, France; from there he later travelled by coach to Berlin, Germany where he was arrested.[26][27]
Police were treating Magnotta's apartment in Montreal as a crime scene.[28] Blood was found on different items including the mattress and the refrigerator.[19][7] According to La Presse and CTV, a note was found with the package sent to the Conservative Party headquarters, stating that other body parts were sent by mail and that he would kill again.[29][30] Notes were also included in the other three recovered packages, but police declined to reveal what the notes said, citing "concerns about possible copycats" as the reason.[31][32]
On June 5, 2012, a package containing a human foot was delivered to St. George's School and another package containing a hand to False Creek Elementary School in Vancouver.[33][34][35][36][37][37] It is not known why the two particular schools were targeted.[32] On June 6, 2012, Montreal police took over the investigation after it was confirmed that both packages were sent from Montreal,[32][38][39][40] and the right hand and the right foot were from the same body[32][39][38] that were missing in the Montreal case. They will be transported to Montreal for DNA testing.[40] On June 6, it was revealed by Montreal police that Magnotta had previously stayed in Vancouver for an unspecified period of time and a condo was rented under one of his aliases.[41] Magnotta was featured in a 2003 amateur porn film titled "Street Bait 996: Luka"[42] that was shot in Vancouver, depicting heterosexual males picked up from the streets being "lured" and "tricked into gay sex".[41][32]
Police in Gatineau are investigating possible ties between Magnotta and the 2011 murder of Valerie Leblanc in their city due to the "distinct nature" of both crimes.[43][44]
Search and arrest
A Canada-wide arrest warrant for Magnotta was issued, accusing him of the following crimes:[45][46][47]
- First degree murder;
- Committing an indignity to a dead body;
- Mailing "obscene, indecent, immoral or scurrilous" material; and
- Criminally harassing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and several (unnamed) members of Parliament.
On May 31, 2012, Interpol issued a Red Notice for Magnotta at the request of Canadian authorities, and for several days before and after his arrest his name and photo were displayed prominently at the top of the homepage of the Interpol website. The Red Notice requested that Magnotta be provisionally arrested pending extradition back to Canada by any Interpol member state.[48] It was later confirmed that he left Canada and went to Paris, France.[49] He was seen boarding a bus destined for Berlin, Germany.
Magnotta was apprehended by Berlin Police at an Internet cafe in the Neukölln district on June 4, 2012, while reading news stories about himself.[50][51][15][52][53] He tried giving fake names before admiting who he was.[54] His identity was confirmed through fingerprint evidence.[55][7] Magnotta appeared in a Berlin court on June 5, 2012 and has not yet contested his extradition to Canada.[54][56] Magnotta is said to be "fearing for his safety" from the other inmates due to his portrayal in the media.[57]
On June 4, 2012, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was pleased that the suspect has been arrested, and wanted to congratulate the police forces on their good work in apprehending the suspect.[55] Liberal Party leader Bob Rae said that Canadians should mourn Lin Jun rather than "in any way, shape or form" celebrate the notoriety of Mr. Magnotta.[58] Friends of Lin Jun expressed relief at the suspect's capture.[2]
On June 6, Lin Jun's family arrived at Trudeau Airport in Montreal. His mother was barely able to walk and is only known to have said "We come to take you home."[59][60][42][61]
International reaction
Reactions in China have been highly critical, with some there believing the murder to be racially motivated.[62] People there have questioned public safety in Canada with the Lin Jun killing being the second high-profile murder of a Chinese student there in slightly over a year.[62] Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird called Chinese ambassador Zhang Junsai to convey his deep condolences.[46][63]
