Penumantra mandal is one of the 46 mandals in West Godavari district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.[2] The headquarters are located at Penumantra town. The mandal is bordered by Penugonda mandal to both north, Poduru mandal and Veeravasaram mandal to the east, Attili mandal to the south,Iragavaram mandal to the west.[3]
Demographics
As of 2011 census, the mandal had a population of 60,153 in 16,952 Households. The total population constitute, 30,043 males and 30,110 females with a sex ratio of 1,002 females per 1000 males.[4] 5,309 children are in the age group of 0–6 years, of which 2,744 are boys and 2,565 are girls with a sex ratio of 935. The average literacy rate stands at 80.19% with 43,982 literates of which 22,817 are males and 21,165 are females.[5]
Majority are Schedule Caste with a population of 12,780 whereas Schedule Tribe had a population of 307.[6]
Work Profile
As per the report published by Census India in 2011, 27,257 people were engaged in work activities out of the total population of Penumantra mandal which includes 18,801 males and 8,456 females.
According to census survey report 2011, 21,131 workers describe their work as main work, 3,248 as Cultivators, 12,609 person work as Agricultural labourers. 200 are working in Household industry and 5,074 are involved in other works. Of them 6,126 are Marginal workers.[1]
Administration
Penumantra mandal is administered under Kuppam (Assembly constituency)[7] of Narsapuram (Lok Sabha constituency)[8] and one of the twelve mandals that falls under Narasapuram revenue division.
Towns and villages
As of 2011 census, the mandal has 16 settlements, of which all are villages. Penumantra is the largest and Mallipudi is the smallest village in terms of population.[9]

Education
The mandal plays a major role in education for the rural students of the nearby villages. The primary and secondary school education is imparted by government, aided and private schools, under the School Education Department of the state.[10] As per the school information report for the academic year 2015–16, the mandal has more than 6,302 students enrolled in over 63 schools.[11][12]
