Conflict of Interest
Bidisha's surname was repeatedly editted out of this article by an anonymous contributor without discussion. On 21 February 2010 I received a message purporting to be from Bidisha stating "I have never used my surname in my public work, do not consent to your use of my surname, and eschew it for serious, private, family reasons. Please cease reinserting it. I will not enter into negotiation with you about this." The surname (Bandyopadhyay) was then added by another contributor and, as a referenced matter of fact seems to me to be a legitimate part of the subject's biography, although clearly not a name which Bidisha wishes to be associated with. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alistair Stevenson (talk • contribs) 21:23, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- This anonymous entity may or may not be the subject of this article. If the information is readily available in reliable sources, then any assertions by some anonymous IP address are irrelevant. No "consent" is necessary to assemble information from public sources. I have templated the IP about conflict of interest, just in case it is the subject. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:33, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have reassembled the article around the twin tracks of Bidisha's career, attempted to improve neutrality, added sources for as many appearances as I can find and removed the COI template. Alistair Stevenson (talk) 23:26, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
- If that IP is Bidisha, then she needs to learn how Wikipedia works. It's not her personal website; she doesn't get to dictate what goes in to her page. The arrogance of it: "I do not consent to your use of my surname ... I will not enter into negotiation with you about this." Bidisha: if it's in the public domain and referenced in a reputable third-party source, then it can go in. What you want is, in this case, irrelevant. 86.136.24.15 (talk) 14:04, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
- It seems strange that the subject's surname or full name isn't included - looking at pages of other personalities known by their first name, their full name is given in their article eg. Rihanna, Madonna, Michaelangelo Totorotroll (talk) 17:38, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
- Looking at the edit history, there is some sort of controversy over what Bidasha's surname actually is. A Google search turns up the result that it is either "Bandyopadhyay" or "ShonarKoli Mamata". I haven't found something that looks like a reliable source yet. Totorotroll (talk) 17:46, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

- This article contains a comment by Bidisha about her wikipedia page: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jan/15/bidishas-thought-for-the-delay-online "Sure, they trawled my university matriculation records to find some incorrect and legally and personally sensitive data, but it would be easy to change, right? I emailed the Wiki editor and told him it was a violation and against my consent. His response demonstrated why the internet is a haven for faceless, hate-filled losers relishing their three bytes of power: "Consent is irrelevant."" Totorotroll (talk) 08:38, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
- I've added a reference to her surname now, and am citing the tes as a reliable source. If it is the case that the subject's name has been changed by deed poll, I suggest that a reliable source be cited to back this up. I also suggest that this article be referred to a moderator regarding the issue of the surname being repeatedly edited out. Also, if it is the case that there is more than one person with the same name as the subject, then a disambiguation page should help clear up the confusion. - I don't see what the controversy is here. The assertion of any editor cannot be a source, and only a source can resolve a dispute. Since there is clearly a source for the use of the surname, there is simply no basis for not including the surname. As currently written, the text can't be disputed even if a source is found which says that the surname no longer applies, since the article currently only makes reference to the surname as the subject's birth name, not as her current name. Wikipedia articles aren't personal web pages. Abhayakara (talk) 01:01, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
- This is an article about a person. A person's surname is important and relevant. If there is a good source, we should mention the surname. If somebody says the surname is wrong or inappropriate, let them bring a better source! Dental plan / lisa needs braces! 14:53, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
