Thanks for the advice, ([[User talk:Barneca|talk]]), upon further research into the Wikipedia guidelines for infoboxes [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_Person/doc ]], you are correct, I'll leave that section alone and have instead completed the "Born" section by adding "birth_name" field as is in-line with Infobox_Person guidelines. August, 2008
I've removed your addition to Basketball as you seem to have simply cut & pasted the entire block of text from the given source. Please do not do this in the future; you can read our policy on copyright here. Thanks. Kuru talk 23:23, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for keeping an eye out for copyright violations. This, however, does not violate copyright. Wikipedia states "Do not copy text from other websites without a GFDL-compatible license." This, Wikipedia continues requires that:
* All previous authors of the work must be attributed. * All changes to the work must be logged. * All derivative works must be licensed under the same license. * The full text of the license, unmodified invariant sections as defined by the author if any, and any other added warranty disclaimers (such as a general disclaimer alerting readers that the document may not be accurate for example) and copyright notices from previous versions must be maintained. * Technical measures such as DRM may not be used to control or obstruct distribution or editing of the document.
The content in question is covered by a Creative Commons attribution license. I cited each section which is within the scope of the CC license on the content. I've reverted the article back to prior to your deletion of the content.

- Thank you for your very cordial response, Joe. I'm sorry to quibble, but the license used on that page is "Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0"; the non-commercial clause would appear to be wholly incompatible with the GFDL. If this is your page, you can simply drop the non-commercial section of the license. If this is not your page, you can drop the author a note requesting waiver or permission to re-license.
- I can certainly be wrong in my reading; the various licenses can be a little convoluted. At your request, I can drop a note with other administrators with more in depth experience in that field for a second or third opinion. I would beg that you please not re-add the material until we're both in agreement; and thank you for your patience. Kuru talk 23:52, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- One further note; I did indeed miss the original creative commons note at the bottom of that page, so my original accusation of a blatant copyright violation was incorrect and unwarranted. The quibble above is a different issue, and you have my apologies for that first note. Kuru talk 23:57, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
@Kuru, I have a great deal of influence over the site in question and cited use of the content in the context of Wikipedia is acceptable. They cannot drop the non-commercial clause but could add an exemption for cited/attributed use on Wikipedia. Do you feel that would satisfy the GDFL? My reading of Wikipedia's requirements (noted above) don't specifically excluded CC-NC licenses, but that's just their summary. Also, should we keep our discussion here or move it to the Basketball Talk page? Joe Levi 15:21, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Barack Obama page
I've checked the infoboxes on a bunch of other people, including John McCain, and can find no precedent for inserting people's middle names into them, except to differentiate them from other people with the same name (such as George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush). --GoodDamon 19:22, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
You are correct, Good, the correct way to clarify this is by adding the Infobox_Person required field of Birth_name when the legal name at birth differs from "name" in the infobox. I've made that change. I'd appreciate your help in enforcing that. Joe Levi 19:57, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Isn't that for people who go by nicknames? "Barack Obama" isn't his nickname, it's his given name. It's just that most people don't generally go by their complete name. Check the John McCain article for instance. His full name, "John Sidney McCain III", does not appear anywhere in the infobox. And for good reason: It's not what he goes by. --GoodDamon 20:07, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- The Wikipedia Guidelines for Person Infoboxes don't say anything about nicknames, screen names, aliases, or pseudonyms. The guidelines state that one should use "birth_name" when it is different than "name" in the infobox. The other option is to change the "name" to his full, legal name, in which case "birth_name" becomes redundant and is not necessary. I'd appreciate your help in enforcing this Guideline. Barack Obama
Hello Joelevi,
If you weren't aware before, please note that Barack Obama is subject to article probation: Talk:Barack Obama/Article probation. Please read it if you haven't already. Among other things, this means that edit warring is frowned on even more so than normal, and sanctions are applied quicker than normal. I won't wait for someone to break WP:3RR. Please gain consensus for your edit on the talk page before re-inserting it. --barneca (talk) 19:24, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, (talk), upon further research into the Wikipedia guidelines for infoboxes [[1]], you are correct, I'll leave that section alone and have instead completed the "Born" section by adding "birth_name" field as is in-line with Infobox_Person guidelines. Joe Levi 19:48, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your contributions to the encyclopedia! In case you are not already aware, an article to which you have recently contributed, Barack Obama, is on article probation. A detailed description of the terms of article probation may be found at Talk:Barack Obama/Article probation. Also note that the terms of some article probations extend to related articles and their associated talk pages.
The above is a templated message. Please accept it as a routine friendly notice, not as a claim that there is any problem with your edits. Thank you. -- Brothejr (talk) 20:19, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 20:08, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
