Sokil Kyiv and GA
Was just looking over GA nominations, and noticed that Sokil Kyiv was not listed as a nominee, even though the talk page of the article says it is. Which probably means that you may have not added it to the list. Might want to add it there so someone can review it. Kaiser matias (talk) 00:02, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- It had to have been added to Wikipedia:Good article nominations#Sports and recreation. I may be wrong, but I couldn't find it on that list. Kaiser matias (talk) 00:43, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Please stop reverting to Ukrainian-Canadian. A quick look at the article states that he won a championship as part of a Russian team in 1999. Since he was most likely Ukranian at the time, that would be his nationality. To claim that it is Canadian, which was granted in 2007, would not be appropriate under MOS Bio lead paragraph terms. Norum 21:07, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- Legally he's not even a Ukrainian citizen anymore...so....--Львівське (talk) 21:10, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
He probably has a dual citizenship. Either way, ethnically he is still Ukrainian, not Canadian. So how are we going to solve this?Norum 21:12, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- No such thing in Ukraine, legally, his citizenship has been revoked since 2007. WP bio states "In the normal case this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen or national, or was a citizen[clarification needed] when the person became notable." So citizenship is Canadian, and notable nationality is Ukrainian, so former lead properly compromised between both criteria.--Львівське (talk) 21:15, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

List of black ice hockey players
I have removed the prod on this for two reasons. One is in the edit summary and that is that its a well sourced list and lists of profession by race are common on the wiki. Second is that its already been up for AFD in the past so its ineligible for prod. Feel free to take it to Afd again. -DJSasso (talk) 18:55, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Seems vote in that AfD was to delete both...so....why did they stay? I understand at least the black one is sourced, but what is its relevance? It deals with only the North American definition of "black", and includes those from many black nations, and those who aren't even fully black. It just seems a bit far reaching to include those who are half or quarter black in such a list. Also, can you link me to some other similar lists by race? --Львівське (talk) 19:04, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- I am not sure which Afd you read. But the one I linked to says no consensus. I am not saying I disagree with them being deleted. I am not sure if I do or don't at this point. Its just not eligible for prod because its been to AFD before. As has List of ice hockey players of Latino descent which I just removed the prod on. -DJSasso (talk) 19:06, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- I just tallied up the responses and it was +3 in favor of deletion, I have no idea how strong a response has to be for consensus, just pointing out that votes were in favor of deletion.--Львівське (talk) 19:13, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Oh I see what you mean, I thought you meant it closed as delete. Well the big thing on wiki is that consensus does not equal a headcount. Consensus is about strength of argument. 10 people can say delete for whatever reason, but if 3 people say keep and have it based on policy etc. Then there is consensus to keep. As far as no-consensus calls go. People usually pull that one out when its a very close call because its easier and safer to keep than it is to delete. -DJSasso (talk) 19:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Ukrainian names (answer)
Hello! Excuse me for delayed answer. You may always address to me in English, it's ok. Frankly speaking, these names with g/h are often mistransliterated.
- Юрій Гунько must be transliterated as Yuriy Hunko, i he were Russian - Gunko
- Even on IIHF webpage they transliterate some players in Ukrainian manner (as Dmytro Tsyrul, not Dmitri) and some in Russian (Sergei Varlamov; Serhiy is correct).
- As far as I know Ukrainian Г should be rendered by H
have you watched today's game? i've seen only last minutes of the it and supurb goals by Kasyanchuk and Materukhin. --AnatolyPm (talk) 21:01, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Ukrainian given names
I noticed your post on that regard at Mariah's talk page. In 1996 the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the English transliterations from the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet. You can find more about it at the articles scientific transliteration and Romanization of Ukrainian. Do not pay attention to the spelling of my name as it simply a reflection of Kuchma's Foreign Affairs policies who cared less to implement the Ukrainian transliteration on the international scale. My name would be spelled as Oleksandr Hryhoryev. Best regards, Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 20:29, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- You know, I was wondering about that too. I prefer to stick to what the Ukrainian legislation states as it not simply an invention of 150 politicians. That issue was reviewed on a scientific level by the NANU (National Academy of Science). I have no idea why other people keep on choosing whatever they like choosing. That is totally unacceptable if you ask me. In wikipedia we should correct that issue. In the article of Ukrainian Romanization there is mentioned the use of passports, but that should not mean anything as the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry for whatever reason simply is failing to follow or implementing the laws passed by the Ukrainian parliament. The other issue is in regard of the use of y letter that often takes place in Ukrainian names and is somewhat awkward in English. Well that is just simply a small issue for me. Also in situations when two diphthongs or vowels double up I stick to transliteration rules as well that suggest to simplify them to a single representation. It sad to witness that the Ukrainian government does not care about this issue and due to heavy influence from the Russian Federation people keep on writing names in the Russian manner, I guess maybe they think it is cooler. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 21:08, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
So, that is how it should be (in regards of double vowels) and needed to be corrected. Official transliteration Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 21:29, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- So, Batiar, I see that you are following this stuff. Why are you asking questions then? :) I thought names in English do not get translated as in most of other languages. Right? So we should follow the proper transliteration. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 22:35, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
The wiki's BGN policy caries no value. It is a guide not a rule to try to standardize stuff. No one really tries to endorse transliteration, but prefer for some reason googling. It is being justified as something of more common or something. That is, of course, improper in my opinion. I believe when you are mentioning foreign name you should include any transliteration if available. Wikipedia for example calls Myanmar Burma. Burma is a historic region of British colony, not a state. When I was taken a geography class in Ukraine we were told that the name of the state has changed and officially is Myanmar, not the Burma. It is like to call Israel Palestine a more common word for the territory prior to 1948. They (those wikipedians) do not want to hear anything about an official name change and prefer to endorse their own rules. I might be mistaken, but if that is the case give me a good explanation. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 23:08, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- UN for example refers to (Burma) as Myanmar and the official site of that country has nothing mentioning of Burma, but wikipedia opposes that. What is the deal with that? And wikipedia article only mentions a single source in that regard. In reference to geographic names I personally prefer UN nomenclatures where English language is one of the primary ones. And I do not want to hear any google, nor stroogle. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 23:28, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Ihnat is actually exclusively Russian name and should be spelled as Ignat. However, I will not be surprised if some Ukrainian would be called as Ihnat. The thing about h and g in the Ukrainian language is that during the Soviet times the Ukrainian g letter was omitted thanks to Mykola Skrypnyk alphabet reform. The Ukrainian diphthongs dz and dj today are written as a combination of letter, but until XVIII century they were represented by a single letter. Dz for example was written as S.
On the subject of personal names I can tell you that Taras almost always identifies a Ukrainian. The same goes for Russian Yegor. Also a Ukrainian name is Oksana and Olesya, but today a lot of Russian females carry such names. A lot of personal names such as Hryts, Opanas, Oleksa, Panteleimon, Yemelyan, Yefim, Trofim, Yefrosim, and others that represent a certain Slavic ethnic group are being out-phased with more and more similar to the Latin-based names that are well adopted in Europe: Aleksandr, Andrei, Alexei, and others:( Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 18:21, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, but you are wrong. Ignat (Ihnat) or Gnat (Hnat) is a Ukrainian name. This may also be proved by the fact that there are Ukrainian surnames Ignatenko and Gnatenko which mean "son of Ignat/Gnat". This name is also more or less common among Russians, although I think they prefer yet another slightly different form Ignatiy. Garik 11 (talk) 18:39, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well, it comes from the Roman "Ignatius", of Etruscan origin, so it's not Ukrainian. I googled it and it seems "Ignat" is of Bulgarian origin.--Львівське (talk) 21:47, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
One problem with Ukrainian names is that historically almost all official documents were written in Russian. Therefore you will find a Ukrainian man with the very typical Ukrainian name Ostap (Остап) under the Russian name Evstafiy (Евстафий). Rather confusing if you doesn't know the history of the names. Närking (talk) 21:29, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting. Still if you can read in Ukrainian, check this one. If you cannot, let me know and I'll translate it for you. Garik 11 (talk) 21:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, names can always turn into many different variants and it's not always easy to understand it can be the same person but with different names. For example a Cossack named Hryhorii could sometimes also be known as Hrytsko.Närking (talk) 06:32, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
It is totally your call. If you only find the Russian references just referred to them to explain your actions:) Seems that Garik has point there. Yea if you to write in Ukrainian that would be Hnat. And you also right about the Ignatius case, but Ignat is exclusively Russian, like Demetrius - Dmitri. I tried to demonstrate that even after all these talks that Russian and Ukrainian languages are similar you will be surprised about how different they are. It is difficult to transliterate to English precisely as the English letters differentiate phonetically for various cases of use, unlike for example German or Spanish. Best regards, Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 23:58, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- No. Once again, here's the reliable source So HNAT, IHNAT, IHNATII are all considered Ukrainian, unlike say PAVLO and PAVEL where the former is Ukrainian and the latter is Russian. The same goes for DMYTRO and DMITRY. PAVEL and DMITRY are not in the list, but both HNAT and IHNAT are in there. Garik 11 (talk) 14:31, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Hockey forums
Hi, I have a non wikipedia related question. It's about different hockey forums out there. Apart form forums.internationalhockey.net (which currently doesn't work) I know of hfboards.com which is mostly NHL-centred but also features a KHL forum. Also there's hockeyforum.com but it's North-America-centred. Do you know any other good forums/websites about ice hockey? Thanks --IJK_Principle (talk) 13:57, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- I found nothing. Looks like HFBoards and the International Hockey Forums are the best. IIHF's website has a message board but it's nothing special. thehockeyforum.com is locked and hockeyforum.com is even more NHL-centred than HFBoards (it that even possible?) --IJK_Principle (talk) 17:35, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I just hope the IHF website is offline only temporarily because it is one of the best out there. --IJK_Principle (talk) 19:05, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
- MyP2P has a lot of broadcasts. I also looked at the IIHF website and the Official website of the tournament and it doesn't seem there are TV broadcasts of the tournament. However - I encourage you to check MyP2P and especially their forums tomorrow - there might be a link to the game. --IJK_Principle (talk) 22:02, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure, there was a qualification tournament for the next season.
Could you please check this edit? Your English is obviously better than mine so a rewrite of some sentences might be a good idea. Thanks --IJK_Principle (talk) 08:19, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't argue your reverts—I too prefer not to have place of birth in the lead—but seriously stop labeling the edits as vandalism. Don't defame, discuss. —Krm500 (Communicate!) 06:30, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

- His edits are not in malice, that's the difference. If he wont discuss there are other options. —Krm500 (Communicate!) 06:58, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
On to another topic; Since you are the user with most knowledge on Russian hockey and the RSL/KHL, would you be interested in collaborating with me towards bringing the Alexei Cherepanov article to GA, and eventually FA? He was my favourite Rangers prospect, I followed him intensely during the World junior tournaments, and I was devastated when he died. I really want to see the article in better shape, but it's not easy to find sources about his career with Omsk in English. —Krm500 (Communicate!) 01:42, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Mickiewicz
Hi, Mickiewicz was most definitely not Russian, despite being a subject of the Russian emperor. It would be an extreme example of WP:Original research to describe him so. (When you refer to WP:BIO I presume you mean WP:MOSBIO, but it most definitely does not and did not say that someone's nationality is always the same as their "citizenship", whatever that would mean in historical contexts.)--Kotniski (talk) 09:46, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Nikolai Zherdev
Can you explain the point of this edit? Why remove the pronunciation of his patronymic, since it clearly differs from the Ukrainian pronunciation? Seeing as how he's a, you know, Russian hockey player, I think that a pretty good argument for his full name being there.71.121.211.26 (talk) 02:05, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- I've reverted your unexplained edits here. If you feel you have a valid rationale for your edits, please use the edit summary. Furthermore, please explain your rationale in-depth here, as I honestly don't understand what the point of your edit was. 71.121.211.26 (talk) 20:12, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Per MOS:BIO, "While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name should be given in the lead paragraph, if known." Since he plays for Russia, has citizenship, and currently lives in Russia, for all intents and purposes he's to be considered Russian. So while he may be known popularly as simple "Nikolai Zherdev," the Manual of Style actually requires us to state his full name. I don't see why the Ukrainian transiteration of his patronym should stay and the Russian transliteration should be removed. (Technically, were we to fully embrace the "common name" argument the lead would begin as "Nikolai Zherdev" rather than "Mykola Zherdev".) And anyway, what does this have to do with his father? Why does it matter if his father lives in Ukraine and pronounces his name as "Oleh" rather than "Oleg"? How does that in any way change the pronunciation of Zherdev's personal patronym in Russia? He's known as "Nikolai" in Russia rather than "Mykola", is he not? So how is this any different than "Olehovych" and "Olegovich"? Certainly you don't seriously believe Russians would pronounce his name as "Nikolai Olehovych," do you?--71.121.211.26 (talk) 21:57, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Vysshaya Liga
We have a situation of sorts here. Vysshaya Liga is becoming the VHL, FHR gives control of the league to the KHL and we have 2 main problems:
- Should there be a separate article for the new league? I looked at Russian Wikipedia and someone already created a separate article for the VHL. (Here's the original article)
- What's the official name in English, how to properly translate Vysshaya? I believe this is an ongoing problem. It's similar to MHL - at first it was called the Minor Hockey League but currently the only official name in English appearing on the official website and in press releases is the Youth Hockey League.
I believe for the time being we should leave things alone. Wait until whether someone at Russian Wikipedia suggests to merge those 2 articles or not and definitely wait for the official name of the league in English - so to know where to move the current article / where to create the new one. --IJK_Principle (talk) 17:46, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- The name should probably be Vysshaya Liga (ice hockey). We tend to leave league names in their native name unless there is a clearly dominant english name like the KHL has. Didn't actually realize this article had had its name moved away from that name. As for spliting into two articles, that depends only on what is officially happening with the league, if they actually are stopping the league and creating a new one then two articles, but if its the same league just being controlled by a new entity then its the same article. What the Russian wiki does has no bearing here, we organize things differently than alot of language wikis. -DJSasso (talk) 17:52, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- About the splitting: I'd say what's currently happening with the league is similar to what happened to Superleague 2 years ago, although with slight differences. First the control of the league is transferred from the FHR to a separate body, then a name change (although the names are pretty similar, THEY ARE different - the former was simply called Vysshaya Liga, the new one is Vysshaya Hokkeinaya Liga (VHL)). This is what's the same as with the RSL/KHL transition. However there are things that are different: for example the old trophy stays - the Bratina Cup. So it's questionable whether a new article should be created. It IS a new league, although with an almost identical name. --IJK_Principle (talk) 18:42, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

KHL Map
We need to change the map. Remove Ukraine for the time being and add Slovakia. All with appropriate colours. I would do it myself but I have no idea what tools to use, GIMP maybe? Also where to find a blank map to edit that is centred on Russia but with Slovakia included. --IJK_Principle (talk) 12:56, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Corn vs. Maize
You are one of several editors who have indicated concern with the fact that when a person wants the article on Corn, they will have trouble finding what they want, because they are not sent to the article on the grain that most of the English-speaking world calls "corn". Furthermore, the disambiguation page to which they are sent has not appeared helpful. I recently changed the wording on the dab page in question, and would like your input whether or not the present version reduces the problem to an acceptable level.
Full disclosure: I was one who once fought hard for Maize to be moved to Corn, but I didn't get my way. So now I just want to make it better. HuskyHuskie (talk) 04:04, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Describing edits
Hi. Regarding your edit summary here, please do not label edits made by other editors as vandalism unless they are actually vandalism. In general, labeling edits which are part of content disputes as vandalism is likely to be counterproductive and to be considered uncivil. JoshuaZ (talk) 20:43, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Jewish Bolshevism. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. When in dispute with another editor you should first try to discuss controversial changes to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. Should that prove unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection. If the edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Jayjg (talk) 21:36, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

- This isn't unprecedented: Semyon Varlamov changed his first name (sometimes unfortunate in English), Evgeni Nabokov anglicized his name to "John Nabokov" briefly early in his NHL career. Slava Kozlov changed his name. Just go with it. The NHL and North American press have accepted it. It will be "common use" soon enough. ccwaters (talk)

- More details from Tim Panaccio: This will be Zherdev’s sixth season in North America. Until now, his name has been spelled “Nikolai.” This week, he went to a bank to cash a check and his name didn’t match his passport which said, “Nikolay.” The Flyers say this was the first time someone pointed out to him the discrepancy. Zherdev asked to have his name corrected with the league and media and the Flyers are now trying to do that. Incidentally, because he was in Russia last season, Zherdev’s profile is not even found in the NHLPA directory of players for the coming season. His profile will re-appear once his name is added to the Flyers’ roster that goes to the league next week. [1] --Stevenparkie (talk) 04:17, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
