Will you be addressing the image concerns on Talk:Tony Penikett? 117Avenue (talk) 05:21, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Had no real plans of getting involved in that, no. My interest in the article has been limited to fixing the referencing and preventing the WP:COI editor who's been trying to blank almost everything about his political career — when it comes to the photograph, however, I'm sorry to admit that I really don't care one way or the other. So I have absolutely nothing to contribute to the discussion, and I don't see anything in that discussion which implies that there's actually been a consensus established to actually do anything in particular. So, shrug. Bearcat (talk) 05:36, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- I don't want to sound mean, but protecting the page without giving an end date, editing the article without edit summaries, and not participating on the talk page appears to be article ownership. 117Avenue (talk) 06:20, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Then kindly review the history of what was actually happening to the article — preventing an editor from blanking large sections of the article, including the almost complete obliteration of the fact that he had ever been Premier of the Yukon at all, is a standard "administrator enforcing Wikipedia's rules" issue, not an "ownership" one. And I really don't have anything at all to contribute to the photograph discussion either way, so exactly what am I supposed to "participate" in it by actually saying? Bearcat (talk) 06:23, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Being the overseeing admin, you could review the discussion and make a decision on which image to use, "close" it as it were. 117Avenue (talk) 02:45, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Categories by nationality/place
Hi, Bearcat! With regards to the LGBT writers from Canada category on Henri Nouwen's page, I'm wondering if your explanation for putting it back on is related to the place and nationality guidelines outlined here? I read them over before removing the category and it wasn't clear (to me) that simply publishing while living in a country would suffice for inclusion. With that said, I can see how 'LGBT Canadian writers' implies something different than 'LGBT writers from Canada'. In an event, I'd like to try and avoid any confusion in the future. Thanks, Dnllnd (talk) 23:17, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

re: massacres of men
Hi Bearcat, I responded to your comment, I agree with you it should not be used for killings of soldiers by soldiers, but as far as I can tell the contents are all killings of civilians. I provided some links and other evidence there, I'd appreciate if you'd read what I wrote and reconsider your !vote. thanks,--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 02:46, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- please... Your vote means a lot to me. Out of hundreds of massacre articles I only found ~20 where male civilians were explicitly separated and slaughtered. This is called sex-selective murder or Androcide and is covered in the literature and Adam Jones has built a database of such instances so reliable sources care about this and group such massacres together. These were not battles nor killings of combatants. I'd really appreciate you taking another look. Thanks.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 02:08, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Canadian poets / Canadian women poets
I was taking a look at some poetry stuff and I noticed that Category:Canadian poets are all men, with all of the women placed in Category:Canadian women poets. Then I noticed it was something you did in January. Is this something you're working on to ultimately make the category a container? Reference Errors on 1 July
Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that an edit performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. It is as follows:
- On the Chad VanGaalen page, your edit caused a cite error (help). ( | )
Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can . Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 01:07, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Please consider also these deletions
first, with respect to promotionalism:
- Sumantra Chattarji is not at all promotional, but factual, and depended on citations, probably will meet WP:PROF.
- For Woody Carvalho, the article does not seem in the least promotional: it's a straightforward description. It's sketchy, but there is a sources, and, since it has an equivalent in the Portuguese WP, a decent article could be written. (It's since been re-entered here unimproved, and another admin, WilyD has declined an A7, on the same reasons I give here)
- For Uniiverse , again the article seems basically descriptive . I'm not sure its notable, but that's another question.
- Vladimir Stritesky is factual not promotional. It will never survive afd or even blpprod, but it's not G11.
second, with respect to A7:
- Ronald Beckett asserts the creation of large classical works that have been performed by recognized, though not famous, orchestras. I don;t know he's actually notable, but this is surely a claim to some degree of significance.
- f Christopher Blank - Bourque was a valid BLPPROD, and is almost certainly not notable, but it's not A7, since he played in the American Hockey League, which is a reasonable claim to significance.
- Vladimir Stritesky lists various awards. I doubt they;re enough to make him notable, but it would need discussion. (It was since reinserted, and another admin declined the A7 on the same grounds as myself)
- Cousin Matty is asseterd to be a significant performer. I doubt actual notability as such, butenough of a claim is made that there might be arguments if someone looked for sources, so it isn;t a speedy.
- The Dollar Business is probably not notable, but it could be said to make a claim of significance as being published by a major publisher, and is at any rate a product, not a company and not subject to A7.
- For Ps 235 lenox school, you deleted it as A7 although A7 does not apply to schools. It's easy enough to just redirect.
additionally, all of these were unilateral deletions on you part, without a prior nomination by another editor. There are rare times when this is needed, but it is certainly discouraged, primarily because of the possibility of making errors, or at least in doing deletions which really needed some discussion. I also notice you did not in any of these inform the contributor. This too is permitted, but discouraged. It seems to be extraordinarily unfair, especially to new users, and most particularly to new users acting in good faith whom it will almost always lose to WP. (especially because its trivial to do it with Huggle). If evidence were needed to prohibit unilateral deletions except for vandalism, or to require notification, this set of deletions (all in June 2014) would serve as good examples. . You have been an admin since 2005, two years longer than i. have. I know that back then deletion practices were much more free-form; I've had to rethink some of my practices a expectations have changed, and I think all of us who have been here that long will always need to periodically do so. Personally, It certainly would seem nice to be able to delete things by myself on he ground that i didn't think the community would find them notable, using my own view as the test of that. . But that's why we have the community discussions. The basis for speedy as for all other administrative actions is, rather, that no reasonable admin would disagree. Everything else needs community discussion. DGG ( talk ) 04:43, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

categories
Could you please add back Category:21st-century Canadian writers and Category:Political writers that you took out here? Subject is both a general writer (politics) and also a novelist. --Netoholic @ 07:18, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Category:21st-century Canadian writers isn't a large category, and seems to be the "catch-all" for all writers who aren't just novelists or poets or playwrights. The best categories for this subject are non-fiction ones. He's not known well for his fiction writing. --Netoholic @ 07:32, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- I think you're very wrong in how you're handling writers in that category. Categories are meant to assist readers, not confuse them, and putting a primarily non-fiction writer into a fiction one based on one novel is confusing. Always go with the best category, the most descriptive one, don't get hung up on sub-categorizing just because a subcategory exists. And when someone watching a page you change voices an objection, take it as helpful feedback and trust them. --Netoholic @ 07:40, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Tony Penikett (again)
A question has been asked at the WP:Help Desk about an admin action that you took. It seems that you changed the protection status of Tony Penikett from fully protected to the less drastic, but contrary to policy, state of PC/2. An explanation has been requested. While PC/2 is less drastic than full protection, an RFC in late 2012 concluded that it should not be used in the English Wikipedia. Is there a reason why you took this exception to policy? (There was an issue recently where the WMF set an article to PC/2 as an Office action, overriding policy. This does not appear to be such a case.) We assume that you had a reason, but would like to know what it was. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:27, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

I was an editor for this page and noticed that it's been deleted for being poorly sourced. I am confident I can cite sources that can meet and exceed WP:BLP notability standards. The subject has been widely covered in national media (CBC's The National twice, and TVO's The Agenda) as an activist for her positions on free speech, climate change and participatory democracy, and she was a principle subject of the feature documentary 'Escape from Suburbia'. She had her own segment on Discovery Channel Canada and is a published journalist. I am happy to cite these sources and others. However I would need access to the original article in order to edit it. If you would consider un-deleting it, I could within a few days clean it up and find satisfactory sources to meet WP:BLP standards. Her page existed for 2 years before she ran for office in the mid-2000s. Her political life while biographically pertinent, is not central to her notability.

Was that an unintended side effect of the tool you used, or did you have a specific reason? Did I misunderstand WP:GLOSSING and do it incorrectly? Worldbruce (talk) 06:12, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

gender pronouns in Kauxuma Nupika
You may wish to dispute my reversion of the pronouns here, but IMO as all historical sources refer to this person as "her"/"she" that imposition of Wikipedia "policy", as claimed by the inline comment I removed, is incorrect and more than a bit anachronistic. She was decidedly female, though she did say to other indigenous people that the white man had changed her sex....not by surgery, by any accounts, nor by hormonal treatments. "Gender self-identification" is a modern concept and IMO should not apply to past personages; fine for modern-era people I suppose. But is this policy or as is so often the case when I hear such claims, actually only a guideline? Usage in the article was inconsistent, with female terms and the male pronoun imposed by whichever editors conflicting in the same sentence. That's bad writing and incorrect usage. And if that is Wikipedia policy, I submit it's highly incorrect if that overrides sources, which it should NOT. As per my comments on the talkpage there, it is not Wikipedia's business to rewrite history or change what sources say based on modern gender-politics agendas or any other modern language-politics or other linguistic agenda.Skookum1 (talk) 04:40, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Excellent work on the Kaya article, thanks. It has been bothering me for ages but I could not make the connection. We'll probably still have to keep an eye on it due to past self-promotion but at least it now looks encyclopaedic. - Sitush (talk) 11:09, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Kathryn Holloway
Dear Bearcat, I have updated this page citing many reliable sources that should meet or exceed WP:BLP notability standards. Of particular interest to me was the subject's involvement in the libel chill precedent-setting cases involving Wayne Crookes which I cited extensively in the update (that case perhaps should become its own page in the near future, and I'm going to consider writing it.) I believe the page now qualifies to be undeleted. I am posting here first as a courtesy to you.
Mattfguerin (talk) 16:44, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Kathryn Holloway
Dear Bearcat, Holloway is interviewed and clipped in the CBC National documentary story of August 16, 2007 called "Libel Chill" by reporter Leslie MacKinnon. I don't think there is a transcript or video of this story online to reference. I am a librarian at CBC TV Network and am attaching the documentary's transcript:
[- Citizens sued. KATE HOLLOWAY (BLOGGER): They don't want to deal with the extraordinary amount of stress and trauma. MARK KELLEY (HOST): Canadian bloggers are under siege. Leslie]
MARK KELLEY (HOST):
- Citizens sued.
KATE HOLLOWAY (BLOGGER):
They don't want to deal with the extraordinary amount of stress and trauma.
MARK KELLEY (HOST):
Canadian bloggers are under siege. Leslie MacKinnon explains why.
MICHAEL GEIST (BLOGGER):
I think they'll close up shop and leave.
MARK KELLEY (HOST):
Could the threat of lawsuits push Yahoo and Google out of Canada? Leslie MacKinnon taps into the concern.
KATE HOLLOWAY (BLOGGER):
They're afraid of being sued. They don't want to deal with the extraordinary amount of stress and trauma, financial but also emotional. -
Well, they're the soapbox of the 21st century, blogs. Thanks to them, you don't have to be a columnist to share a point of view or make pointed remarks. You simply go online and post an opinion. Blogs have given voice to thousands of people, but increasingly many have found that platform kicked out from under them. They've been muzzled by the threat of lawsuits. As Leslie MacKinnon explains, it might turn the Canadian political blogger into an endangered species.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
Lived here and worked here, I'd be even crazier than I already am.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
This is Zeke's Gallery in Montreal. It's a gallery that owner, Chris Hann, describes as fiercely independent, which might also characterize his art blog on which he sometimes wrote scathing commentary about the arts scene. You ticked some people off. You annoy some people.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
Yeah.
SANDRA ABMA (REPORTER):
That's what you set out to do in a way.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
Exactly, yes. It is the sort of thing... I can handle that. I'm used to that. I expect.
SANDRA ABMA (REPORTER):
But one of his blog postings drew a libel suit, and this is what's left of Zeke's Gallery's art blog now, empty space with no postings. He eventually took the whole blogging part down.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
So let's take the whole thing off because I don't understand what's happening at all, and better not to be in contempt of court than thumbing your nose at the court. Judges are, yes, serious guys.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
So now you can't write about the art world at all on your blog.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
No.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
Your blog is gone.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
Mm-hmm.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
That's the effect that this has had on you.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
It is dark.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
The man who says he was defamed by the blog works for this gallery. He didn't want to do an interview with us. From his statement of claim, this is partially what was said about him, that he "tried to sell some fake paintings to Loto-Québec." He says that Loto-Québec, after an investigation, dropped the case. Chris Hann says when he wrote the offending blog, he'd just compiled information that is still available on other sites, on the websites of the "National Post," Loto-Québec and Radio-Canada, among others.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
Verbatim.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
Not only that. If you want to read exactly what the alleged libel was, you can still find it on other blogs. And yet those other blogs are not being sued.
CHRIS HANN (ZEKE'S GALLERY OWNER):
No. If they are, I haven't been told, and I imagine if they were getting sued for using stuff that I had written first, they'd tell me.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
This is the capricious nature of libel on the Internet. An allegedly offensive comment can be taken down and pop up on another Internet space, maybe an anonymous one. Just how far can an Internet libel suit go in pursuit? First of all, pretty well everyone agrees that libel is libel, online or off. But, on the Internet, a libel suit can travel pretty far. In Canada, some Internet host sites are being sued, sites like Google, Yahoo, MySpace, for material that they certainly don't monitor. And some bloggers are being sued for providing links that you can click on to get to other sites.
MICHAEL GEIST (BLOGGER):
The suit alleges that I called attention to the site that links to the site, to the site that contains this allegedly defamatory content in some articles that I wrote.
MARK FRANCIS (BLOGGER):
So I linked to a site that linked to a site that somewhere had content which I, to this day, I'm not certain what that content is that he claimed was libel.
KATE HOLLOWAY (BLOGGER):
I'm also being sued for a blog posting where I linked to a site where he's alleging that there are libellous remarks, even though there's thousands of posts on that property.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
The man filing these lawsuits is Wayne Crooks, a Vancouver businessman who has lent over 400,000 dollars to the Green Party of Canada. He has filed suit against about a dozen Green Party members or former members, including these three, for linking to or referring to Internet material that he says portrays him as disreputable and a bully. Kate Holloway fears legitimate political discussion is being shut down.
KATE HOLLOWAY (BLOGGER):
I'm saying people are afraid. People are afraid of being sued. They don't want to deal with the extraordinary amount of stress and trauma, financial but also emotional, that goes with receiving a lawsuit. I've seen people with extraordinary integrity and extraordinary passion for justice that aren't speaking out any more, because they're just burnt out and, you know, they're not ready to talk any more. Because they've either been sued or they've seen other people getting sued.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
Wayne Crooks is also suing Google, Yahoo, MySpace, Wikipedia and others for refusing to take the offending material down or, if they did, for not monitoring it in the first place.
MICHAEL GEIST (BLOGGER):
I think that before companies like that start monitoring millions of pages, I think they'll close up shop and leave.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
Leave Canada, he means. Michael Geist teaches Internet and the law at the University of Ottawa. In the U.S., Internet companies and sites are granted immunity for the content of others.
MICHAEL GEIST (BLOGGER):
They don't rush to take the content down merely on the basis of an unfounded allegation. That's in stark contrast to what we have here in Canada where those same organizations, if faced with the identical threats, allegedly defamatory feedback or a posting or a book review, are likely to take it down because they don't enjoy the same kind of legal protection.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
Mark Francis is being sued, not for anything he wrote, but for putting material back on a site after it had been removed.
MARK FRANCIS (BLOGGER):
People think that if, as a defendant, you win, that you get all your costs paid for. It doesn't actually work that way. Either it's paid on a scale. So typically you're still out thousands and thousands of dollars. And of course, if you're low income like me, you don't have the cash flow to pay any of the bills anyway. There is tremendous pressure to apologize. There is tremendous pressure to do whatever he wants in order to make this go away as quick as possible.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
Mark Francis has taken down his political news blog. His blog was one of thousands written by many who have never dreamed they could become journalists, satirists, columnists, political commentators. They just did it because now you can.
MICHAEL GEIST (BLOGGER):
It's not for nothing that "Time" named you as the person of the year last year. The growth of user-generated content, whether it in video or pod casting or speech through blogs and the like, is an incredibly important story for political participation, for voices that previously weren't heard, for diversity of our media and the sorts of choices that we have. This is an enormously important story in a sense, and development for democracy and speech more generally. And I think what we need to be doing in this country is ensuring that we've got a legal framework that helps support that participatory Internet.
LESLIE MACKINNON (REPORTER):
This much we know about the Internet... it's evolving with speed and wonderment. Too rapid perhaps and too various for the law to fully keep up. Leslie MacKinnon, CBC News, Ottawa.

All I can say is it certainly wasn't me, since I only use Page Curation or XFD to put an article into the AFD process. If the article does not exist, then how can the AFD be created? I certainly didn't do it manually, for instance in the last 3 weeks alone, I must have fixed about 40 comments in various AFD discssions, which were incorrectly formatted by new(ish) users who didn't read the AFD guidelines, so i can't see writing in a new comment, unless it was a mistake. Proposed deletion of City of Glass (film)
![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/74/Ambox_warning_yellow.svg/48px-Ambox_warning_yellow.svg.png)
The article City of Glass (film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Unsourced; fails to meet notability gudelines through subject, cast, or production. Or anything else.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 12:38, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Question
Hello Bearcat,
I am asking you for your input. I saw that you too are in a discussion to about on-air staff on the WikiProject Television Stations page. Recently, I had contacted a user (Vjmlhds) about why he thinks on-air staff should stay in the WJW (TV) article. He stated that "As long as we so it in prose form, it's fine". I asked for help on the WikiProject talk page here, and User:Sphsu has talked to the user, but he just isn't getting it. I've provided links as to the discussions that have happened, and it is basically his way or no way. He had a discussion with two other users here, but he is clearly the only one that thinks it should stay. I was wondering if you would just add your input on his talk page. This was unfortunate; I'm not up on Vancouver civic politics and social activism, but his is a very well-known name on the local scene for many years in terms of both Chinese Canadian politicking and also re the Downtown Eastside and East End in general. User:Bobanny who is up to snuff on all this I'll consult; he's no longer active but I know him on FB. A little more digging in non-mainstream papers or ones you just might not know about (Courier, West Sider, The Tyee) should turn up more than that one piece in the Straight mentioned. He's been in the press quite a bit over the years, I'm surprised a google (if anyone tried to do that) didn't turn up more. Definitely prominent in coverage of Chinese Canadian and Chinese-in-general concerns for many years.Skookum1 (talk) 14:46, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, as usual, AfD's don't dig all that deep; Ottawa Citizen item, including him in headline, Harpreet Singh Show, him as guest, op-ed column in the National Post, [http://www.theprovince.com/Chow+grandfather+paid+Head/8998125/story.html Vancouver Province article, also on canada.com, with him in the headline, his profile, i.e articles by him, in the Straight, "Sid Town Chan, President of the Head Tax Families Association of Canada and a tireless activist on the Head Tax issue in Critical Collaborations: Indigenity, Diaspora, and Ecology in Canadian Literary Studies: Indigeneity, Diaspora, and Ecology in Canadian Literary Studies edited by Smaro Kamboureli, Christl Verduyn, Laurier Press], and a whole bunch more. Not notable in Toronto or the UK or USA isn't relevant, but very typical of a certain attitude; and Google was there all along. NOT having a page for him in advance of the election, when he already has had a long-standing and rather high-profile political and media career is "not on" and, though I know you're not anti-leftist, could be construed as unfair; I don't really even like the guy, but I see no reason to damn him as "non-notable" and delete him, rather than seek to expand the article first using the ample resources available.Skookum1 (talk) 15:00, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Canadian television stations
![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/15/Ambox_warning_pn.svg/48px-Ambox_warning_pn.svg.png)
A tag has been placed on Template:Canadian television stations requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page, where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Precious
cat precision
Thank you, member of the love cabal with assorted facets, including "officially a geek", for a wide wide-open sandbox full of actors and genies, for countless articles such as Church of the Holy Trinity (Toronto), for adding and maintaining more precise cats, to keep "keep various categories and subcategories well ordered", - you are an awesome Wikipedian!
Honestly, there is no way to tell these two apart, so Burton/Berton is an easy mistake to make

Thanks for ruining my hour lesson
Thanks a lot. Planned an hour lesson and put something on that was only going to be up for half an hour. I know it isn't the best method, but now I have to scrap my entire lesson. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.165.210.114 (talk) 18:06, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
Quebec mayors
Hi, is there any rule about this on Wikipedia? Statscan seems to ignore the article here. Does it make sense to follow French alphabetical-order rules on the English Wikipedia? -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:10, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- After looking into it further, I cannot even find any examples out there that use the same sort of order that your do, in English or French. If you can find some, then perhaps we should open it to others to weigh in. -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:22, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- That's a rule on the French Wikipedia, though, not in English. It might make sense in English, but I see no examples of it used in any government publication. I wonder if it is used in France but not Quebec? Anyways, I also think your decision inconsistent with other pages on Wikipedia, for example, here. -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:13, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

A question
I will politely ask, even though you seem to make a lot of enemies here. Is there any way that I can improve this Rick Mantey article? Komitsuki (talk) 12:54, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
