:::Cornwall does not have a separate page for the historic county because the ceremonial county article is able to adequately cover the county's history. Generally speaking only counties which have ceased to be used for local government, such as [[Middlesex]], have separate articles. Crooked House
Just a courtesy message to flag my edit summary here – agree with your comments re: squished content between images, but think the other image is a better one to keep. Happy to discuss if you feel strongly about it! MIDI (talk) 19:08, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- I don't feel strongly about it in the slightest, but I appreciate the heads-up! Cheers, A.D.Hope (talk) 19:35, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
DYK for Dolwyddelan Castle
On 11 August 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dolwyddelan Castle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after Dolwyddelan Castle (pictured) was captured in January 1283, its new garrison was equipped with winter camouflage of white material and stockings? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Dolwyddelan Castle. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Dolwyddelan Castle), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

County how to
I seem to have decided to propose a rewrite of the county how to. If you want to go and have a look User:Chocolateediter/sandbox, feel free. I'd also like you to ping anybody on the how to's talk that you think might be interested in either arguing or agreeing on the changes. I think I may have a lot of discussing to do. Chocolateediter (talk) 23:22, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- Well, it's a big job so rather you than me! I've not logged in for a couple of days and I can see things have moved on since you made this comment, but I'll catch up and see if I can be of use anywhere. Cheers, A.D.Hope (talk) 08:53, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- I've moved the sandbox to Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about counties/2023 Reword sandbox, have I captured the infobox guidelines or have I lost some of it when I was trimming it down. Been doing different stuff such as a trip to Sheffield so I've been less active as well.
- They is a talk to post any other comments you want to make and if you want you can point some others over to there as it does need a lot of differing views get get it right. Chocolateediter (talk) 12:58, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Well done
Wanted to express appreciation for initiating and getting the County infobox images guideline through. The guideline's necessary to stem having too many images of too small size. It was good that most editors were in the same ballpark. Hopefully the discussion also gave editors pause to think about picture quality and the complementary aspects of the collage. You handled the discussion really well. Rupples (talk) 01:39, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for noticing my efforts, it's much appreciated. I can see that the infobox discussion is spreading to other types of article, so hopefully the guideline can act as a good starting point for those debates! A.D.Hope (talk) 08:52, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Don't know about you but the North Yorks infobox image discussion has come as light relief after the ongoing unitary authority area one! Rupples (talk) 21:41, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Absolutely! I don't think local government brings out the best in any of us (certainly including myself), it's so complicated and causes so many issues. Having said that, after the initial teething troubles I think the UA discussion has turned out pretty decently. A.D.Hope (talk) 21:52, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
Vandalism
I have had to undo all your vandalism which in many cases comes across as very disrespectful, especially in the cornwall page.
please refrain from vandalising flags in the future, as its upset many people, Myself included
Also, Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia, its a place for storing knowledge, we don't store knowledge by erasing it, hope you understand, Cheers - Barry, The Vexillology Community 82.14.227.184 (talk) 17:38, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for making me aware of your edits. I have reverted most of them, mostly because they are flags which specifically represent the historic counties and the articles in question are primarily about the current ceremonial counties. Merseyside does not have a flag, the one you inserted is a banner of arms of its defunct county council. The Isle of Wight's flag represents the current county, I believe, so that one is fine.
- The flags haven't been erased, they're generally included somewhere in the article body, like this. A.D.Hope (talk) 20:10, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- The Essex one is official so is cornwall and to remove it is an act of erasing the cornish nation which has upset alot of my cornish friends and colleague, if you wish to remove them from the ceremonial counties you should make it up to them by making a historic country page for every county which flag you removed, cheers. 82.14.227.184 (talk) 20:18, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- The Rule of the thumb however is, if these flags are still flown on local government buildings they are official, if you looked on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Piran%27s_Flag#Usage you would see there is sources for it being official https://web.archive.org/web/20111008211307/http://www.cornishstudies.com/index.php?q=node%2F10

- Both the Essex and Cornwall flags are registered with the Flag Institute. This means they represent the historic county rather than the ceremonial county, as the Institute only registers flags for the historic counties. You can find the Cornish flag in the 'culture' section of the article, and the Essex flag in that article's 'Culture and community' section.
- Cornwall does not have a separate page for the historic county because the ceremonial county article is able to adequately cover the county's history. Generally speaking only counties which have ceased to be used for local government, such as Middlesex, have separate articles. A.D.Hope (talk) 20:25, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- there is no evidence to suggest they ceased to be the official flags and if you do not wish to make a seperate page for that reason, that contradicts your edit. 82.14.227.184 (talk) 20:41, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
