Hi Bearcat, I was wondering of you could take a quick look at this edit and give me any advice on how to handle it. The same edit has been made a couple of times already, I cleaned up per WP:MOS, only to have the editor put it back in and for some reason think the grammar is acurate. I was going to clean it up again, but because of the attack made in edit summary, I just reverted, pointed out that it didn't come close to manual of style policy. I left a message attempting to explain some of the problems. Editor is calling others stupid and liars, and claims he will just put it back in whenever other editors remove it. Because of this, I figure the text will be back soon, and would like to know how best to handle someone like this. Was I wrong to revert because of the MOS errors? I would also think there is some BLP problems here also. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 00:49, 16 September 2011 (UTC) |

I actually have a detailed proposal for the new search system. I'm waiting for the results of a related design competition before publishing it. I figured that if my design won, it might add a bit of weight to my argument. Your point about automatically upgrading the pages is well taken. But my intent wasn't to reclassify all of WP myself (obviously). Rather getting a number of articles to that point as proof-of-concept would hopefully put a spotlight on the proposal. Clearly that didn't work.
The problem, I think, is that Wikipedia conflates categories and tags. The category "men" lists all things related to the concept of manhood. The category "Male heavy metal singers" behaves like a semantic tag (a lousy, overly specific one, granted) in that only articles about specific male heavy metal singers are found therein. A category that lists all things that relate to a certain general subject should be handled as a portal while a category that lists only things that fit its eponymous description should be a tag. A poor separation of these concepts makes article metadata completely useless for semantic search. User:Qoncept

References to hobby websites
Bearcat, I maintain a couple websites based on hobbies of personal interest. One of these is Alberta Population. The population data published on this website for municipalities and unincorporated communites come from primarily two sources – Statistics Canada federal census results and the Alberta Municipal Affairs (AMA) official population list (OPL) annual publication (consolidation of latest AMA-accepted municipal census results or federal census results for Alberta municipalities).
The pre-1996 federal census results were all compiled from hard copy StatCan publications, while the 1996-2006 results were all compiled from the StatCan website. The municipal census results for municipalities, up to 2010, were compiled from the OPLs posted on AMA's website.
A year ago, an IP user swept across Canada adding population history tables to articles for Canada's larger municipalities. Within Alberta, I followed the user's edits with "citation needed" tags, despite that I could add references to verify these tables from my own website. I didn't add references from my website as I was apprehensive that this may qualify as promotion or conflict of interest, or may contravene other WP policies/guidelines.
Can you advise whether adding inline citations from my website to verify uncited historic population tables would be a contravention WP policies/guidelines? Note that I receive no compensation of any means through maintaining this website. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 20:46, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Movie Ratings
Hey I was wondering why in film infoboxs the movies rating and reasons why are not given. I think it would be a great addition considering that people look up movie ratings online and wikipedia is always one of the top choices on any search engine when you type in a film title. --Samus Fan102 (talk) 03:23, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Questions about recent deletion of my article
Hi Bearcat,
You recently deleted my article titled "1degreeBio" without any notifications. This is a not-for-profit organization and intends to serve as a bridge between scientists and companies. I am a graduate student and has no affiliations with this organization. Therefore, it is not my intention to advertise it for profits, rather I am raising awareness for research community to use it as a tool to make their research life easier. If it is possible, could you please restore the page so as to allow me to make appropriate amendments? Or please advise on the reason for the deletion and I can revise it accordingly. I appreciate your help very much.

Categories on redirects
Bearcat, at Category:Former municipalities in Alberta, you'll notice Forest Lawn, Calgary and four other Calgary neighbourhoods have been assiged to this category. However, it is technically Forest Lawn, Alberta (a redirect to Forest Lawn, Calgary) that was a former municipality. As the current neighbourhood boundary may not be the exact same as the boundary of the former municipality at the time of absorption by Calgary, among other reasons, would it be more appropriate to move the category from Forest Lawn, Calgary to Forest Lawn, Alberta? If so, I'll move the categories from all five neighbourhood articles to their redirect pages. (I tried looking for WP policy or guidelines on this matter, but I couldn't find anything.) L. Ron Hubbard (author) page
This is regarding redirecting the abovementioned page. I recognize that you redirected the page from the created article to the main L. Ron Hubbard page, as they are the same person. I have moved the page to "Written works of L. Ron Hubbard" to rightfully describe the scope and content of the article. The information on L. Ron Hubbard's written work is covered by quite a number of references. There are minor pages addressing different facets of L. Ron Hubbard's life and career, such as L. Ron Hubbard and the miliitary, L. Ron Hubbard and the Writers of the Future Contest, and so on. There is also a category page that aggregates pages on his work. The facet of his life both as a pulp fiction and nonfiction writer, IMHO, is worthy of its own Wikipedia article.Orangepulp81 (talk) 00:03, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

The Devil's Ballsack
Well, looks like you don't believe in the Devil's Ballsack, having labelled it a hoax. I can assure that it is not - over 30 people were involved in the last creation of one, there will be 40+ in attendance this year, each of who would vehemently deny that it is a hoax. While the article (and the technique) may have a limited audience or relevancy, that's a far cry from it being fictitious. I would encourage you to reinstate the page; I'm happy to comply with whatever standards are required, and have already edited the page substantially to make it more factual and less instructional. I'm not sure how to edit it to make it "hoaxy" but if you let me know I'll do my best. OK, bearcat - I hear what you're saying, but what is the process to establish credibility? Do I need a petition, or sworn witness statements? And to who do I send them? Or, would photographic evidence be sufficient? Arguably your criteria for inclusion would also eliminate such entries as "bigfoot," whose existence, of course, is only asserted and remains unproven (...though I suppose bigfoot satisfies the notability criterion, though that seems a bit... arbitrary). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dreadsword (talk • contribs) 17:35, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
I also wanted to note that a request for evidence should constitute a proposed deletion rectifiable by an appropriate edit to include required evidence, not an immediate deletion. Dreadsword (talk) 17:42, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Bearcat:
You recently deleted the Andrew Allen (musician) page with the explanation as follows: "No explanation of the subject's significance (real person, animal, organization, or web content): had a hit single in 2010 with a song that hasn't been released yet? try again.)"
First and foremost, the subject's significance is obvious - he's a musician. He's been one since 2005, is signed to a major label, has performed at major events, is found on the likes of VEVO and iTunes and has had a top-ten hit in Canada. As to the second portion of the explanation, it seems hasty to me that a legitimate page such as this was deleted due to a single error, when the rest of the information was factual. Common practice (and sense) would be to message the writer of the edit and ask them to correct it, not undo the entirety of their work with one fell swoop.
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deathspawner (talk • contribs) 03:01, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Planet Narnia redirect
While I agree that many of the problems we see on Wikipedia are from unknowing editors who just delete at the drop of a hat (I'm seeing this work it's way through on another page), I contend that the redirect should have never been put in (as it is at the very least lazy and misleading) and thus the problem is not my deletion. However, it's a pretty minor issue and if the redirect were to stay in place it wouldn't be the end of the world... Ckruschke (talk) 20:31, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Ckruschke

Un-Deleting Ex Wife Wedding Dress Article
Hello Bearcat,
Thank you for taking the time to take a look at our page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Cotter_(My_Ex-Wifes_Wedding_Dress)
We are not trying to create spam or blatant advertising. We are simply trying to add to the valuable content of wikipedia.
Kevin Cotter has become well known for his blog http://myexwifesweddingdress.com/ and is now having his book published. The many references from media sites like the Today Show and the Huffington Post should show why this article should be included in wikipedia.
I thought that putting the blog name in the title would be helpful for people looking for him or his blog instead of spammy, maybe i should create another page for his popular blog.
Looking at your experience as a wikipedia admin i know we have a lot to benefit from your help and guidance.
Please let me know what we can do to get this page created.

Thanks from Edward Kitchen
Thanks for renaming my article as "D. C. Rice" - I was going to do it myself as I realised the Wikipedia convention is that articles about people use the "plain" name as the article title. I plan to do a bit more tinkering with the article (which is my first) and am happy to get advice from an experienced user. I hope I haven't overdone the links - my intention is to create links which are proximate to the article topic (like "black churches") but not ones which would be merely incidental (like "trumpet", say). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edward Kitchen (talk • contribs) 23:31, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Check 21 Act/RemovedSections
A tag has been placed on Check 21 Act/RemovedSections, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.
If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion (

Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. - Merced has published one short article in a theater journal and co-authored a scholarly article on gay activism. He has not published a book and does not professionally write. He is an actor and director. I would recommend eliminating the descriptor "writer" from his article (which I wrote) rather than have him in the category "LGBT writers from Puerto Rico". I believe it is simply confusing/misleading to have him there with other people who are clearly "writers" in the sense that they publish books and present themselves as writers.--Lawrlafo (talk) 04:49, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Uncategorized vs. only being categorized as a stub
Hi, I noticed at Hoop cheese that you tagged it as uncategorized. It was already in in Category:Cheese stubs. It seems to me that that is not really the same as being uncategorized (although perhaps catimprove would be appropriate). LadyofShalott 15:35, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
- If I might indulge in a little TPS, Bearcat is apparently of the opinion that adding uncategorized to such articles still serves some purpose. This was expressed here, and Bearcat subsequently amended Category:Category needed to reflect this. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 21:05, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

- Hi Mike—sorry if I sounded rude (to either of you) — I have no particular feelings on this aspect of the categorization guidelines. My only question is, is this a pressing issue? I guess I still don't really see the point of this kind of "batch tagging", when it could be trivially accomplished with a bot—which would have the added benefit of not cluttering up peoples' watchlists. AWB Question
HI Bearcat! I saw you are using AWB, which I've read is separate software that you download and install on your computer. I'm assuming that this is software that just quickly updates wiki's with proper formatting. For example you changed Niagara Falls to Niagara Falls which I guess - am I to also be explicit about putting the direct link to the page even if both links technically work? Furthermore the actually page is named like this Niagara Falls (with an underscore) so why has the AWB added the Ontario in and the spaces? It seems like AWB is something maybe more suited for experienced editors, no? Is this software worthwhile for a beginner to register and download? Jason (talk) 08:28, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

MaJenDome Question
Hi Bearcat, Saw that you deleted the MaJenDome page and was wondering what needed to be revised in order to receive your approval. Please advise. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Efreytes (talk • contribs) 18:14, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

MaJenDome
Why was the MajenDome page deleted? The deletion note said you didn't find it to be "notable" enough - but how is coverage from reputable sources (YAHOO! News, WCBS and DNAinfo) and global awareness not notable? I think you've made a mistake in deleting that page and hope that you will release it. Thank you. CjCBraun (talk) 15:42, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
The article Page Music has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Not notable. Only released stuff by one act.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Video Citations
Hi Bearcat, I see you're one of the top wiki editors so, way to go, congrads, and thanks for making this site better. I have another question for you if you have a minute. I've been using some video citations and I can't seem to find a way to cite the same video source, to include only the new place in the timeline where I want to reference. In a regular citation I know to just give it a name ref="name", I've read Template:Cite_video but nothing is there on this. So for example if I cite a video in the first paragraph which references the information at 1:20 - then again in the last paragraph I need to reference at 5:30 for a completely different subject - how do I keep the same citation, but just include the new place on the timeline im referencing? Is there a way to even do this or do I need to include the entire citation again? Thanks. Jason (talk) 18:53, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Benutzer:Matthiasb/Historic Places in Christchurch, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion (
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. DASHBot (talk) 12:02, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

You wrote: "either write a proper article or have the redirect deleted through WP:RFD" -- Yeah, like I'm going to waste my time building up an article on it, only to be removed by Deletion Nazis like you. No thanks, I've experienced too much of that already. Geĸrίtzl (talk)
Don't forget the talk page!
Hi there, you recently undeleted Scott Fielding. Can you ensure when you do this that you also undelete the talk page (and check that it has appropriate WikiProjects listed too). Thanks. The-Pope (talk) 12:41, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Upload Cinema page
Hey Bearcat,
as you disapproved of the original Upload Cinema page, here's an attempt to make it shorter and strictly factual. All information was taken and translated from the Dutch Upload Cinema wiki. Hope this is more to your liking. Davidovitsj (talk) 09:47, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks for adding cat to Macs Joy article. I only started the page to get rid of redlinks in the Brave Inca article (although it meets notability) and haven't spent as much time on it as I should have. Tigerboy1966 (talk) 09:59, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Apparent mistaken categorization
Hello. I noticed that you put Canadian Yeshiva & Rabbinical School in an "Orthodox Yeshivas" category. The school is explicitly not Orthodox; it should be listed as non-denominational. Could you correct this? I am not as familiar with the categories and their use as you are. (Keep up the good work). Thanks, Mzk1 (talk) 12:52, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Fix It
I think you've messed up things a bit here. I can't create any article because I can't add any heading to it. Now please, put it back. Krenakarore TK 15:19, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Awa Marie Coll Seck
Thank you for pointing this out! The correct version of her name is apparently the one using a hyphen, so I'll merge the info in the article I created by pasting it to the existing article on Awa Marie Coll-Seck. I will probably do that later this evening. Is there a way to delete the old article (the unhyphenated version that I created) after I've finished with it?

A barnstar for you!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for removing the transcluded space under the So You Think You Can Dance template/navigational bar. I have been working on the Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo article for a while and before your edit there was a space in the external links section between the SYTYCD bar and the SYTYCD Australia bar which was very annoying. I tried fixing it myself to no avail. Then you came along with your simple edit and made it all better. Keep up the great work! // Gbern3 (talk) 14:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC) |
Emile Chautard, Chester Franklin
Hi Bearcat, since you started the "Category:Films directed by William C. deMille" page, do you think we may need like pages for Emile Chautard and Chester M. Franklin, brother of Sidney Franklin? ThanksKoplimek (talk) 16:26, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, I keep forgetting that Chester doesn't have an article yet even though he directed important films like Toll of the Sea. I just keep forgetting because Sidney has an article and I take for granted Chester has one too. Thanks again.Koplimek (talk) 16:58, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Is this a bit much?
Hi Bearcat, I was wondering of you could take a quick look at this edit[2] and give me any advice on how to handle it. Thanks. Cmr08 (talk) 00:49, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
