Tirusulam (Tamil: திரிசூலம்) is a suburb of Chennai, India. For administrative purposes, it is a census town in Kancheepuram district. The Chennai International Airport terminals are located here. There is also a railway station here (opposite the airport) with a convenient pedestrian subway that connects the station and the airport. The neighbourhood is served by Tirusulam railway station.
History
The township of Tirusulam has its origin in the Tiruppurasundari Tirusoolanathar temple which is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century AD by Kulothunga I. The walls of the temple are inscribed with inscriptions from the Chola period.Tirusulam is well known for its Tiruppurasundari Tirusoolanathar temple. The temple has its big history behind the walls. There is a story about hiding the precious metals and jewels beneath earth, where the temple have the secret way. Kulothunga I was the one who planned to hide the source inside the temple. There is a subway under the temple, which connects the temple and near by hill known as "Panchapandava's hills', where the king had his palace. Tirusulam is one of the Census Town in Kancheepuram District. Census Town 5,997 pop. [2001] 2.41 km² = 2,478.4 inh./km² The Tirusulam Hills have been used as a shooting spot for various Tamil movies and television soaps. The Chennai International and Domestic Airport is present here in Tirusulam, you can get the clear and full view of the Airport from the Tiruslam mountain.
All travelers who want to take the airlines has to drop here at Tirusulam railway station. For the travelers convenient Government prepares to open Metro train terminal at airport named as Tirusulm, which will have the pedestrian between airport and Metro train terminal and Tirusulam Electric train station. The railway minister has announced the good news for the travelers who wants to arrive at tirusulam airport at correct time from all parts of the tamilnadu, we will have the express trains terminal at tirusulam like tambaram and egmore.It will be very convenient for those people who working abroad, because they are all coming from the south.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Tirusulam had a population of 5997. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Tirusulam has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 51%. In Tirusulam, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
