Italian translation and hello :-)
Hi Phoebe, I'm an Italian librarian and a Wikipedia enthusiast. I've just written a brief article about what libraries can do with Wikipedia and, to present it on my personal blog, I've quoted your page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Phoebe/why. For your curiosity, it's here: http://nonbibliofili.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/i-bibliotecari-sono-anche-wikipediani-davvero/. I've translated in Italian the first paragraph and I hope this is fine for you. Please apologize my English, thanks, bye! --Virginia Gentilini (talk) 10:19, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Demand Progress Authoring
Howdy, thanks for your welcome message. Is it just me, or does it seem that there are a lot of unrelated politics unnecessarily involved with authoring an article for this crowd-sourced encyclopedia? Just a hunch, but both users involved with deletion had 'red' in their usernames. I suppose I could use your help sprucing up the page to meet guidelines so the trolls don't eat me or delete the page. --Teststudent (talk) 04:20, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

I started a discussion on Talk:Suicide#Honor Aaron Swartz and link to crisis hotlines at the top of the page. Thanks Phoebe! I hope that reports like WP:5000 will not just fascinate the community, but be a factor in guiding editing/enforcement efforts moving forward. I thank you for continued support through numerous iterations of Wikisym/Wikimania. I regret that my professional career will soon be pulling me in orthogonal directions. Hey yo, thanks for that. Useful stuff. But, is it still accurate? Seems to me when I registered User:Peteforsyth demo a few months back, HotCat was enabled by default. It's possible I'm remembering wrong…and short of setting up a new account, I don't really know how to confirm! Is there a way? -Pete (talk) 01:06, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, looks like you're right. (In my defense that's pretty new, though!) I'll tweak the wording. I wonder if there's a list of default-on for new users? Steven might know... -- phoebe / (talk to me) 01:10, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- A better question is: is it automatically enabled for all commons accounts? That's actually where I started out. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 01:18, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, it was a (pleasant) surprise for me too, which is why it stuck in my memory :) And yes, I'd love to know where to look stuff like this up. I'd love even more if there were a way to ping Steven and have it show up in a feed or something…but I digress :) -Pete (talk) 01:26, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- p.s. I'm pretty sure it has been on by default on Commons for a very long time -- unless I'm mistaken, that's how I became aware of its existence. -Pete (talk) 01:27, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
- …annnd confirmed, I just used my demo account (which I haven't really used on Commons, much less customized) and it's enabled. -Pete (talk) 01:28, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

CRL
Hi Phoebe, I'm wondering if WP or WMF has ever done any outreach to the Center for Research Libraries, and you seemed the one who would know. It seems like an obvious path to pursue for improving wp:RX access to obscure sources, if they're prepared to entertain it. No doubt we can go through individual member libraries, but that doesn't really seem fair to the WP editors at those member institutions and might in some cases violate their terms of service. LeadSongDog come howl! 21:11, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- Howdy,
- the short answer is I don't think so (or I don't know of anything, anyway); the long answer is I think maybe it would be something CRL would entertain, maybe not. They tend to enter very complicated agreements with the member libraries (which I don't fully understand) for consortial deals and access to their collections, and it's far from free. This could be a good area for a Wikipedian in Residence to help sort out, though? -- phoebe / (talk to me) 21:34, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- Seems plausible. Perhaps the W-I-R at the OCLC or the LoC could offer some insights. As I understand it they are major participant institutions in CRL. The recent discussions around possible loss of WebCite on-demand archiving of ephemeral web based sources might also play into it. I note CRL's staff directory includes a "Member Liaison and Outreach Services Director", who might be a good initial contact point.LeadSongDog come howl! 05:09, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
- Perhaps DGG, who is a librarian, might have some input. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:53, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- As Phoebe says, the CRL is not a library in the ordinary sense, but an interlibrary center for large bodies of print and microfilm material. It only works as a resource for individual libraries (almost all significant college and university libraries are members) with only two exceptions: It has a reading room in Chicago open to researchers under the normal special restrictions of a rare book facility, and it will make photocopies of items in its collection for anyone at a minimum cost of $175 for up to 50 pages. It would not seem to make any sense for us to interface with it directly, even were they prepared to enter in such an arrangement. DGG ( talk ) 00:45, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for clarifying that. I suppose that means working through other libraries, then... LeadSongDog come howl! 06:21, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Phoebe, I'm the guy with the Joseph Pitts page. Sorry for the bad formatting and other troubles. List of Archaeologists
Dear Phoebe:
thank You for making the technical edits on the list of archaeologists. How-ever, I don't agree with Your eliminating the ref. to the Srpskohrvatski Wikipedia article about Cheman. I know Your action follows general Wik policy, but here we are dealing with a list which includes people who can be prominent in material not in English. By having a cross-Wik ref, we "protect" the name from being removed by some-one saying the person doesn't belong on the list 'because s/he has no individual Wikipedia page.' To me, on a list a cross-Wik ref to an entry (in this case, an archaeologist) is like double-bracketing: simply a way of saying that the person merits entry and on essentially the same basis. Kdammers (talk) 07:02, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi! and libraries
Hi Phoebe - how would you suggest beginning reorganizing libraries on WP and Outreach? My issues is that 1) it's in two different places and one needs to see both to get a sense of the topic, and 2) I'm not sure there is a logical progression of pages that would clearly guide novices through the information. What do you envision being the end product we should work to? (Btw, I'm at work at the moment - the actual work I'd do at home in the evening.) Looking forward to tackling this. -- kosboot (talk) 18:55, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! Yes! Let's do it. I suppose what I'm imagining is a non-project specific portal for professional libraries & librarians who would like to get involved in Wikimedia, to provide a one-shop-stop as it were. I think that means working on Outreach (or maybe meta, but there's already a start on outreach), even though the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Libraries pages are maybe more complete here? I don't think there is a logical progression of pages, no. I think we just need to pick a place and start collecting resources.
- The things I'd like to see are:
-
- Library-related presentations
- handouts that could be used for teaching /information literacy etc
- event ideas and reports
- links to relevant projects on commons, wp, wikisource, etc
- best practices, example projects
- ??

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} ( ) next to your name if you're still part of the project.
Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

Organizing libraries pages
Hey Phoebe - sorry for being late with getting to this (reorganization of library pages). I've looked at pages on Outreach and WP. How do you want to organize them? In a sense, I think most of the "how-to" pages belong on Outreach.wikimedia.org. But I'm uneasy with that because I don't think that wiki is as prominent as regular WP, and I have my doubts as to weather the "curious" will follow the trail to outreach (or will even realize that it's a separate domain). As far as the content, I think most of it is there: how-to, the benefits, and the "have-dones." Thoughts? -- kosboot (talk) 13:51, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- @kosboot: hi! I think outreach makes sense as a place to organize both how-to pages and listings of events/projects from around the world -- not just the English Wikipedia. So my first task is going to be collect a list of projects that have been done already, on outreach. I've started working on the pages that are there now to consolidate older WLL content and am going to make a new page to make a list of projects. Does that make sense? -- phoebe / (talk to me) 03:56, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- Here's the new page -- I'm just going to start listing everything I can: [2] ... also, could easily be renamed.

Or do you know who I can ask to write about it? Thanks! (Deadline of the May edition is Friday 7 June 18:00 UTC, so in about 6 hours. If you need more time I can postpone it.) You can start writing at the page outreach:GLAM/Newsletter/May 2013/Contents/USA report. If you wish to be informed by e-mail next time, please write me at this page. You can reach me the best at nl-wiki talk page. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 12:43, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Library project you mentioned on GLAMout
Speaking as a person/not my agency, I'd love to help out - there's a lot of interest in Wikipedia from Michigan libraries of all kinds, public and University. I, too, think libraries are under-represented in GLAM, and many have local history archives attached (may not be notable...). Couldn't figure out how to comment during the GLAMout session. - @Bdcousineau: Awesome! Hooray! Yes, let's work together. We need good ideas! Everything is on outreach:libraries... -- phoebe / (talk to me) 00:06, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

- Ok, will check there. Ideas not usually a problem! =P Bdcousineau (talk) 01:37, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi Phoebe,
I have now read all the questions and answers. Also from the other applicants. In part, it was really disappointing, just a few positive. I'm sure you'll make the race. I have all of your statements which are recognized as the marked by great realism and practical experience. Not only presenting and repeating already known theoretical positions. I think I'm a fan of yours! Greetings from Vienna --Hubertl (talk) 08:57, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Uganda may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry, just again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on .

2nd Annual Wikimedia New England General Meeting
You are invited to the 2nd Annual Wikimedia New England General Meeting, on 20 July 2013 in Boston! We will be talking about the future of the chapter, including GLAM, Wiki Loves Monuments, and where we want to take our chapter in the future! EdwardsBot (talk) 09:53, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks!
Hi Phoebe. Thanks for the tea (and the welcome)! I've actually made quite a few edits before now (mostly copy editing), but I hadn't formally registered before. I figured since I was wading into a potentially contentious issue I should make sure I got my user page started. The chances of me doing much more in AfD are pretty slim. I mostly stick to commas. If there's some way for me to help with the library project/s, please let me know. -Libraryowl (talk) 17:32, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

- @Libraryowl: aha! I thought you seemed like a pretty experienced editor for someone newly registered :) There's nothing wrong with AfD, which always (desperately) needs good people to help out; it's just it's kind of a culture unto its own. There's always a lot of library projects that need to be done; lots of articles to edit, and also I'm slowly working on how-to & outreach pages for libraries over here: [3]. Cheers, -- phoebe / (talk to me) 22:33, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind words and offer of help.
Hi, Phoebe,
Thank you for your kind words on my wall when you noticed that I have been inspired by your book about Wikipedia. As you wrote there, I was finishing up sandbox updates for the IQ classification article. I have submitted that to the current nominations on DYK, but so far no one has checked the hook fact there, which I discovered while expanding the article. It occurs to me that since you are a librarian, you can help me better understand how most Wikipedians use sources. I'm pretty big on using print sources and writing pathfinders to reliable sources, but I get the impression that I still need more cultural guidance on how to fit in with other Wikipedians who have other work styles. Any thoughts you have about that would be much appreciated. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 22:29, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest - new user
I am a reference librarian at Grace A. Dow Memorial Library and have been editing the library's Wikipedia page. I have now read the sections on conflict of interest, and wondering where I should put a conflict of interest statement? On the article's talk page? How?
I wasn't aware of the conflict of interest policies when I started, but have no problem with abiding by them. I know that mgreason corrected some mistakes in the format for the external links (which was probably fine, and I messed it up).
Thanks in advance for your help (MadLibn 19:32, 5 August 2013 (UTC)) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madlibn (talk • contribs)
Personal and Moral Rights?
Hi Phoebe Ayers:
I would like to appreciate you on your appointment as a member on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. This may the first request you received from a community member, requesting your help.
In a discussion with Jimmy Wales on the moral rights of the photographers and the personal rights of the subjects, he said "I think that the commons community has gone down a very sad and disappointing path with respect to ethical matters. My views on this are not new, and are well known. Our project is a grand humanitarian effort. That it has been hijacked by people who do not share our values is something that needs to be fixed."
We further requested him to bring this matter to the attention of WMF and make a resolution or something to force Commons make enough policies to protect our rights as a photographer and our commitments to our subjects. He replied: "I am just one board member on this issue. I will continue to call this to the attention of the board and staff, but I need help from the community to illustrate that this is a problem that concerns many of us."
So we would like to bring that discussion to the attention of every member on board.
Further, please note a somewhat related discussion at Commons too: Concern about the bureaucrat role of Russavia.
One admin even exclaimed in that discussion: "I find this rather an interesting discussion but what I find really intriguing is for all the "official" concerns being raised about Russavia's competence as a representative with authority within Commons this isnt being backup by the action of WMF. The reason being is that if there is such official concern over Russavia actions and representations of the community does he continue in a position of trust with OTRS having access to personal information and answer emails sent to the Foundation."
I would like to let you know that some of your strong opinions in your individual talk pages ([4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]) influenced the Commons community to initiate a discussion to develop a policy for courtesy deletions.
We expect resolutions, guidance, opinions, and participation in the development of similar policies and guidelines in future too. Thanks. JKadavoor Jee 11:04, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
