Laos elects a legislature nationally and the public also participates in the election of village heads. The National Assembly (Sapha Heng Xat) has 132 members, elected for five year terms.
Laos is a one-party state. This means that only one political party, the Revolutionary People's Party of Laos is legally allowed to hold effective power. At the last elections, held on April 30, 2011, this party won 128 seats. Only four(approved) non-partisan candidates won seats.
The next parliamentary elections will be held on 20 March 2016.
