Outreach
Conferences
New York City Chapter Meetups have been held on an approximately bimonthly schedule since August of 2007. Aiming to build community and promote the sharing of ideas, regular meet-ups and annual conferences are intended for those interested in or affiliated with the Wikimedia community or the Free Culture movement. Wikimedia NYC strives to facilitate discussion and promote collaboration within its membership through round-table and general discussions, as well as relevant presentations.
Wishing to further public media literacy and encourage wiki contributions, the chapter participates in a number of educational outreach programs in the New York area. Working with local partners such as the Free Culture Alliance NYC umbrella group, these events are generally intended for those attending local universities, or patrons of local libraries.
Events held regularly include three annual meet-ups; Wikipedia Day NYC, Wiki-Conference New York, and Wiknic Picnic NYC, as well as a more specific (generally single-topic oriented), frequent event; Wikipedia Meetup NYC Salon.
Centered on the New York metropolitan area, more broadly home to over 20 million people, a local chapter like Wikimedia NYC can serve as a bridge between the Wikipedia/Wikimedia community and academic and cultural institutions, through a variety of different programs. Everyone who can attend a meeting is welcome to join!
