This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Japan. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary, it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Japan|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- Note that there are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove links to other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Japan.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.
This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Asia.

- Delete There is no content about the subject present in the article and no indication of notability. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:24, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
- Weak keep. The nominator's claim that the topic is inherently non-notable is problematic. We can create articles on any notable topic, and California does have particularly strong trade and cultural links to Japan. The real question is whether the topic of California–Japan relations has been widely discussed in reliable sources, and I believe that it passes that bar: [1], [2],[3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. Additionally, the governors of California make frequent trips to Japan representing their state, and, as Andrew D. pointed out, California has had legislation specifically targeting Japanese nationals and immigrants. The current content of the article is weak, and we won't lose much if it's deleted, but I'm convinced that this is a notable topic. Pburka (talk) 21:56, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Unconvinced of notability. Not enough material here to warrant an article and can't see how it would grow further. A collection of non-notable titles. The article has been deprodded with the rationale that this was a filmography for a noted female director of pink films. However, I do not believe this is a valid reason to keep this article. For example, I randomly searched for Roman Polanski filmography and was directed to a section in the main Polanski article. All the movies listed are blue-linked.
I thus believe WP:NOTCATALOG applies, and the article should be deleted. K.e.coffman (talk) 01:47, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

- Comment: It was me who deprodded it -- not because I thought it should be retained, but because I wasn't convinced by the reason given for deletion and I thought there could be reasonable objection to deletion. This had/has ambitions of being rather more than some random list. WP:NOTCATALOG doesn't obviously apply: if Hamano is indeed notable (and there's not yet any proposal to delete the article about her), then I suppose her oeuvre has some notability. And if it does, then listing it doesn't seem unreasonable or inappropriate. I'd rush to agree that Polanski's output is greatly more notable (in either a normal sense or in Wikipedia's slightly odd sense), but the fact that a notable subject is dealt with in one section of an article is not a valid reason why a less notable subject should not be given its own article, especially when, as here, it requires some bulk. -- Hoary (talk) 09:23, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

- Delete. As I wrote in the initial AFD, fails WP:NOTFILM, and has no coverage shown in reliable independent sources. The Pink Grand Prix is a readers' poll conducted by "PG" (perhaps "P*G") magazine, a publication of no established notability. According to this news article [9], cited as a reliable source in the article on the award itself, "PG" is a "fanzine," or fan magazine. Reader polls, whether for print or online publications, generally aren't seen as establishing notability unless the publication is clearly notable (if then), and when they are, only the first place finisher is generally seen as having its own notability established by the poll. The film's article is sourced only to a comprehensive listing of produced films, which establishes only existence but not notability, and to the fanzine's own website, which lacks the independence required to establish notability. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Treated like dirt by many administrators since 2006. (talk) 14:18, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

- Comment - The Japanese wiki article (jp:お田鶴の方) makes it clear she is a real figure, though it notes the various versions of her story. The article is relatively well referenced, though it uses a lot of Edo era texts that are not easy to check. Michitaro (talk) 04:10, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
- Probably keep -- Since precise dates are given, I take this to be history, not fiction. Assuming COPYVIO issues do not arise, this relates to an incident of history. I know far too little of Japan to know whether or not this was a notable series of events. If kept, the article needs a lead section to take the reader into the subject, rather than plunging straight inot the midst of events. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:26, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

This previously was discussed for deletion with no consensus. The claim that there are enough reliable sources ignores what the sources are. A few are actual press releases, like the one from GLAAD, that are clearly not reliable. Other are local papers which I don't think in some cases met our requirements for reliable sources, and in any event they are covering extremely local events from a human interest perspective that is not the type of coverage that constitutes notability. Wikipedia is not meant to be an aggregate collection of articles on everyone who has ever gotten covered by weak local news stories, and that is all that exist on Aizumi. - Keep. I checked the sources and they're all reliable and about the subject. Meets notability guidelines.--SouthernNights (talk) 23:00, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Keep The San Gabriel Valley Tribune is a reliable source. Although the GLAAD resource is an advocacy website, for the mundane information it provides for this article, I argue that is a reliable source. The HuffPo article is not reliable, as it was written by the subject's mother. Enough to meet WP:N.Tapered (talk) 07:29, 5 March 2017 (UTC)- The question is not weather the information is reliable. Wikipedia is meant to cover notable people, and that means that they are cared about enough by reliable sources to be written up. Advocacy publications can not be used to show notability in any way. Thus sources can be used that can not be counting towards reliability, and 1 source is never enough to pass GNG.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:30, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
- Keep - Tribune is good. GLAAD might be good. But here's another newspaper [10]. That's 2. That's GNG met. Might be others [11] Nfitz (talk) 02:34, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
- Delete. Non-notable person. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 13:58, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

- @Sportsfan 1234: I notice that you added the identical comment to 11 AFDs in 3 minutes, however there's a lot of difference between the articles. I'm not sure how you would have chance to look at each article and evaluate the references, and sources provided above. Can you explain why you don't consider the provided references as meeting GNG? Nfitz (talk) 20:47, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
- Delete John Pack Lambert pointed out that the GLAAD advocacy page, while it may be a reliable source for certain info, can't count toward notability. With only one dedicated piece from a reliable source, subject lacks notability = Delete. Tapered (talk) 22:29, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

- That other source above is a junk source. The article is in a issue specific weekly, which is not really a reliable source. Beyond that is is an issue advocacy article that does not provide indepth coverage of Aizumi.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:35, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- Anyway GNG requires "multiple" sources, that means at least 3 under almost every circumstance.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:36, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Johnpacklambert: Why do you consider Northwest Asian Weekly a junk source? There is nothing in WP:RELIABLE precluding weekly newspapers. Not in depth, it mentions him 16 times, with the last ⅔ of the article being in depth? Also, 3 not required - 2 is normally fine in an AFD discussion. Still, here is a third. Here's a fourth. Here's a fifth. Nfitz (talk) 01:03, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Weak Keep There's also an LA Times article from 2010, currently stuck behind a paywall but the preview seems to show significant coverage. Add to the others and that's GNG met. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 00:42, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Delete I'm blind, searched for it in the existing sources, was looking at dates retrieved not article dates, mea culpa. With that being the only source, I think it's hard to say GNG is met. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 00:45, 9 March 2017 (UTC)As per the discussion below, I'm going to strike out both votes and stay neutral. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 02:17, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

- @PageantUpdater: What about the other sources I provide above - 2, 3, 4, and 5? Nfitz (talk) 01:03, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- They're definitely more promising, but I have seen plenty of articles be deleted with similar sources as not meeting GNG. I don't necessarily agree with that, it's more like I literally can't figure out where to stand on what does and doesn't constitute a WP:RS for the purposes of GNG. I mean it seems to me some editors have made up their own rules & interpretations of that and I literally can't make head nor tail of it. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 02:17, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
- Comment Nfitz has produced 4 ostensible supporting references. The Northwest Asian Weekly is seemingly reliable, BUT the mention in the article is limited, hence trivial. Nichi Bei and Infotrak are not reliable sources. The East Caroline paper is a university sheet, and can be considered reliable for university and local reportage, but not reliable to bolster notability for a Wikipedia biography. The sources fail to bolster notability = delete. Tapered (talk) 06:37, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

No real indication that the subject passes notability guidelines. One source is an interview, which generally would not pass GNG, the other is a press release from the musical group they are part of. Neither passes as an indepdent, reliable 3rd party source. John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:51, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

- Comment might be notable, but needs a Japanese speaker to look at the sources and the publishers. 8/10 sources seem to be from "Model Press".198.58.162.200 (talk) 01:31, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
