Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion or removal have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. Examples of what files you may request for discussion, deletion or change here:
If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions. | |||||||

Instructions for listing files for discussion To list a file:
State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:
These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used. |

Instructions for discussion participation
In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:
- Wikipedia:NFCC#1 – Free equivalent is/is not available
- Wikipedia:NFCC#8 – Significance
- Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 – Unacceptable image use
Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.
Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons'''
, you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

Non-free image which is not needed per WP:NFCC#3a. There is already a non-free file of the logo (File:San Diego Strike Force.png) being used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox; so, there's no need for two non-free files which are providing essentially the same information. If the color of the helmet is worth mentioning in the article, it can be sufficiently done so using text per WP:FREER. Note similar FFD discussions at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2019 March 21#File:Rio Grande Valley Dorados Helmet 2019.png, Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2019 March 21#File:Austin Wild Helmet 2018.png and Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2017 January 15#Chicago Slaughter files. The problem isn't that the helmet is not the helmet being used by the team; it's that there's no need for two non-free files which basically show the same logo to be used for identification purposes in the main infobox. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:42, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Contested PROD. Contested PROD. This non-free image is being used in the Ireland Baldwin article with a claimed purpose of "To demonstrate Baldwin's media coverage alongside Entertainment Tonight. It also illustrates how the video was formatted and utilises pictures taken by Baldwin.", but lacks any sort of significant sourced commentary about the image. Fails WP:NFCC#8. Whpq (talk) 12:48, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
- Speedy delete. Nonfree image of living person. "To demonstrate" is never an acceptable use rationale, since referencing the source is sufficient to "demonstrate" whatever claim is made. That is what references are for. Also fails NFCC#8 on its face, since the "demonstrated" claim is more than adequately conveyed by text alone. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo). Contested PROD. Non-free audio file being used in Ireland Baldwin article. This non-free voice clip is not needed to understand that Alec Baldwin left an angry voice mail. The article covers this in a single sentence. Fails WP:NFCC#8 Whpq (talk) 12:53, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
- I'd argue that hearing the audio helps give understanding to how scandalous it was when it happened. Keep Abzeronow (talk) 14:43, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:COPYLINK, WP:ELNEVER and WP:YOUTUBE. The actual audio recording may be possible to justify per WP:NFCC#8, but the YouTube channel which is cited as the source of file seems to not be the original copyright holder of the file itself which means a link to it shouldn't be being added to Wikipedia. Whether the text of what was actually said in the recording is sufficient per WP:FREER can be debated, but if the audio is needed then it should come from as official a source as possible. Even then, it's unlikely that WP:NFCC#3 or even WP:NFC#Audio clips would permit the entire audio track to be uploaded and used. Generally, only short extracts of audio content tend to be allowed, not the entire track. Anyway, I've WP:HIDDEN the file because I believe the COPYLINK concerns take precedence over even WP:NFCCP; so, I think that's what needs to be resolved first. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:11, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
- The source for the file has been changed from YouTube to TMZ. Still TMZ is certainly not the original source of the audio since it was leaked to them. WP:NFCC#4 requires that non-free content be published by the original copyright holder as explained in WP:NFC#Meeting the previous publication criterion; so, unless it can be shown that the creator of the audio (i.e. Alec Baldwin who left the message) first published somewhere and then TMZ released the audio on their website, this file still is a copyright violation and the audio file, even an excerpt, cannot be kept as non-free content. TMZ might've argued that they were using the file as fair use or maybe they just didn't care; Wikipedia's non-free content use policy is much more restrictive than fair use which means this file can't be kept per relevant Wikipedia policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:55, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

I declined speedy deletion of this, as it now has a fair-use rationale. However, it's by no means clear that this actually is the flag of the city of Fort Worth; it is apparently derived roughly from the logo shown on this page from 2004. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:46, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:NFCC#3a. I tagged this file for speedy deletion because it was originally licensed as
{{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}
; the licensing, however, was subsequently changed to non-free by the uploader after file was tagged. As I tried to explain at File talk:Flag of Fort Worth.png#Contested deletion, converting the license to non-free might have resolved the WP:F9 issue, but it created a whole new set of issues related to WP:NFCCP. If this is not really or no longer the city's flag, then it's encyclopedic value is questionable; however, even if it was or is still the city's flag, then there's really no justification for what is essentially the same file as File:Logo of Fort Worth.png. Two files are not needed to show the same logo in the main infobox for primary identification purposes and former logos, etc. are only really allowed when they themselves are the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-4. Moreover, once the file's licensing was converted to non-free, it usage in 2011 Fort Worth mayoral election, 2015 Fort Worth mayoral election, Flags of cities of the United States, List of urban parks by size, and Template:Infobox settlement/testcases doesn't comply with WP:NFTABLE, WP:NFLISTS, WP:NFCC#8, WP:NFCC#9 and WP:NFCC#10c; so, the file cannot and shouldn't be used in those articles, even if it's non-free use in Fort Worth, Texas could be justified. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:45, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

File:GE9X cutaway.jpg
- File:GE9X cutaway.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Marc Lacoste ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
I believe this fair-use image (used in General Electric GE9X) fails WP:FU criteria #8 for contextual significance. Configuration details specific to this engine are almost invisible at this low resolution. What is visible (the main configuration and layout) is not at all specific to the GE9X. We have plenty of images of similar engines available to show a fan, compressor, turbine arrangement, including the GE90 from which this engine has been developed. Now that we have a free photo of the actual engine as a lead image, there is no need in my eyes to keep GE’s non-free version. Ariadacapo (talk) 06:35, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Keep The exterior picture of the fan does not show the engine config. A free picture of a cutaway could be taken in a museum/airshow to illustrate its config, like in Pratt_&_Whitney_Canada_PT6#Design, but no engine cutaway is on display and could replace it. The low resolution is due to the mandatory resize, the original does show each stage, in a different config than the previous GE90 (3LP+11HP vs 3LP+10HP or 4LP+9HP compressor) with no cutaway anyway, and the relative size of the parts is not the same (the GE9x core is relatively smaller). It seems to me an interesting fair use usage of a promo picture, not available by other means right now.--Marc Lacoste (talk) 09:47, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- The original image is super interesting — we can make an external link to it. But as it stands now in the article, it brings nothing that can’t also be seen in many other free images we already have. Ariadacapo (talk) 10:21, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Keep as per @Marc Lacoste: said, there aren't any free images of a cutaway of the GE9X because there aren't any on display in museums or public places for people to take pictures of. --Atomicdragon136 (talk) 03:43, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

- File:Boeing 777X launch.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Wbm1058 ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
I believe this non-free photo (used on Boeing 777X) now fails criteria #1 and #8 of WP:FU: "no free equivalent", and "contextual significance".
(this image formerly displayed two airplanes and was used as lead. now that we have a free lead image, it is used to illustrate different configurations of the 777X)
The only useful visual information here is that the -8 airplane is shorter than the -9. A sentence is enough to convey this information. If not, a simple diagram could be created. Ariadacapo (talk) 07:31, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Keep As you note, it is a
different configurations
, not illustrated in the main pic anymore. It will not have a free equivalent until the -8 variant is rolled out. The visual difference, being shorter, is the main difference between variants. There are others like the exit door config. This is a useful usage of a promo picture. A diagram would be a nice supplement.--Marc Lacoste (talk) 09:51, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- I fail to see how this supports criteria #1 (a free equivalent could definitely be created for the same purpose) and #8 (removing the photo would not be detrimental to the readers’ understanding of the topic). We can add an external link to the non-free photo montage instead of embedding a thumbnail. Ariadacapo (talk) 10:19, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

- Meh. I guess I'll comment since I originally uploaded this. I don't really recall the circumstances at the time. So, if we have a "free equivalent", where is it? Can someone post a link to it? Or are "free equivalents" actually a bit harder to come by than you imply? Boeing released the photo "for editorial use by news media". I'd like to view Wikipedia as a form of news media, since we're basically on every noteworthy breaking news story that reliable sources report about, from the get-go. I would be really surprised to learn that Boeing objected to this use of their photo, but if they did ask us to delete it, then sure we should delete it pronto upon their request. We should have deleted the "monkey selfie" upon request of the photographer, and I call bullcrap on the claim that the monkey was the responsible photographer. We caused real harm to the guy who was trying to make a living selling photos like that. I can't understand why we took such a soft line there, yet take such a hard line on photos released for promotional purposes. A rationale of "excessive promotion" would make more sense to me. On the other hand if the purpose is for model comparision, I find the photo lacking for that purpose. A better photo would line the different models up so as to show more explicitly how much longer or shorter this one was. Even the original version, before the other plane was cropped out, didn't really do a good job of comparing sizes. wbm1058 (talk) 21:00, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

- Delete - This image is a copyright violation with the current licensing and information as this is cropped and modified from File:OfflineTV Members.jpg on Commons which is CC-BY-SA 2.0. This image fails to identify the source and and does not provide the appropriate attribution as required. This can be fixed. However, the image itself is also squished as the aspect ratio was not maintained with a crop. I have provided File:Pokimane.jpg as a replacement on Commons which maintains the aspect ratio. No need to keep this poor crop. -- Whpq (talk) 11:31, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Decorative use of non-free screenshot in Duck Tales. This particular screenshot itself is neither the subject of any sourced critical commentary nor does is provide any significant encyclopedic information to the reader which provides the context for non-free use generally required by WP:NFCC#8. The reader doesn't need to see the screenshot to understand certain elements from the comic this series was based upon were incorporated into the series per WP:FREER -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:56, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Non-free album cover being used in a decorative manner in The Maltese Falcon (1941 film)#Soundtrack. Non-free album cover art is generally allowed to be used for primary identification purposes in stand-alone articles about albums, but its use in other articles is generally only allowed when the cover art itself is the subject of sourced critical commentary as explained in WP:NFC#cite_note-3 and the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is evident. There is no such commentary for this particular album cover anywhere in the article, and the use of soundtrack album cover art in articles about films or TV programs is generally not allowed for this reason as explained in WP:FILMSCORE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:04, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Not needed, we have now a free image: File:AnnemarieSchwarzenbach.jpg Yann (talk) 18:53, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:NFCC#1. @Yann: If you're sure the Commons file is OK (which you most likely are because you're a Commons administrator and OTRS volunteer), you can probably tag files like these with {{rfu}} instead of bring them here for discussion. There's nothing wrong with discussion per se, but clear violations of WP:F7 usually only need administrator review. Most Wikipedia administrators working with non-free content will check whether the file is really replaceable before deleting, and will suggest WP:FFD for any questionable or unclear cases. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:45, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, I am not 100% sure that the other file is OK. Some IP added a different author, which would make it non-free. Wait for a few days. Regards, Yann (talk) 22:25, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

- Keep The choice of file and resolution is a matter of editorial discretion. As the file is used for a variety of articles of high quality, we should leave well alone to minimise disruption. Andrew D. (talk) 11:07, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
- Replace The Commons version is a lot clearer. The file names are the same, so disruption should be minimal to nil. Why not make things better? Sario528 (talk) 11:19, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
- Replace It looks a lot better, and a thumbnail of this would look at lot better than the current Wikipedia version. Abzeronow (talk) 21:30, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
