He won two Emmy Awards for "outstanding news reporting" and "sports feature". He returned to New York City to be a lead reporter for WNBC NewsChannel. At NBC he reported on some of the biggest news stories at the time, including the crash of the Concorde. With his home just blocks from the World Trade Center, he was one of the first reporters on the scene following the attacks of 9/11.

In December 2013 Gibson left WJLA-TV to join ABC News as a correspondent.[9] Until January 2019, he was also co-anchor for World News Now and America This Morning.
In September 2018, Kendis Gibson was criticized for his coverage of the South Korean band BTS, aired on the September 25th show of ABC's World News Now[10]. The ABC news show aired a clip BTS' speech before the UN General Assembly on youth mental health and violence toward youth[11]. As many of BTS' songs discuss the topics of depression, mental health struggles, and recovery, the band had collaborated with UNICEF during 2017-2018 on the "Love Myself" campaign to advocate against youth violence[12]. In response to BTS' UN speech, regarded as powerful by many viewers[13], Gibson mocked the foreign accent and imitated the diction of the band leader RM[14]. He also stated that “fans are used to seeing the boys spreading their legs” as he dismissed BTS for being a "boy band from South Korea"[15]. Gibson's remarks were viewed as both racist toward Asians and belittling to those struggling with mental health issues[16]. When fans and general viewers requested that Gibson apologize for his remarks, he responded that their comments were "hilarious"[17].
