Requests for permissions |
---|
This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access. Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups". Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests. |

User groups
- Account creator ( • view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
- Autopatrolled ( • view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
- AutoWikiBrowser ( • view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the quick guide on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
- Confirmed ( • view requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
- Event coordinator ( • view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
- Extended confirmed ( • view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
- File mover ( • view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
- Mass message sender ( • view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
- New page reviewer ( • view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
- Page mover ( • view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
- Pending changes reviewer ( • view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
- Rollback ( • view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
- Template editor ( • view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.
Handled elsewhere
Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:
- Administrator and bureaucrat access: Requests for administrator or bureaucrat access need to be posted at requests for adminship and requests for bureaucratship, respectively.
- Bots: Request for bot flags should be made at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval.
- Edit filter: Requests for access to the edit filter manager group and the edit filter helper group should be made at Wikipedia:Edit filter noticeboard.
- Interface administrator: Requests for interface administrator access should be made at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard. Only current administrators may become interface administrators.
- IP-block-exempt: While the IP-block-exempt right can be granted by administrators, this flag is not handled here. Requests for the IP-block exempt right should be submitted via the Unblock Ticket Request System or, if there are significant privacy concerns, email the checkuser team at checkuser-en-wpwikipedia.org or contact a CheckUser directly.
- Checkuser and Oversight: These rights are only granted by the Arbitration Committee, and only after strict scrutiny. More information can be found here.
- AfC reviewer: This access is granted by administrators at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Participants.
- Redirect patrol whitelist: Addition to the whitelist is granted by administrators at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.
- Steward permissions can only be granted in yearly elections, and are rarely given.
- Global permissions such as global renamer, sysop, IP block exempt, rollback, etc should be made at meta:Steward requests/Global permissions.
Removal of permissions
If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.
This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.
The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.
Process
Requestors
To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.
Any editor may comment on requests for permission.
Administrators
Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.
Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

- I have created 65 articles, typically done with meticulous formatting and research. You can check my 20 most recent articles starting from 2020 to get an idea of how I currently write my articles [1], such as List of musical instruments of Cameroon and Kujarke people. I frequently create articles on African cultures, languages, history, and other topics. I've learned a lot in a few years and am happy to contribute more new articles in the future. - @Greenwhitedino: Thank you for your contributions. However, since you have only created 9 articles in the last year, making your account autopatrolled would have a negligible impact on the new page review queue. Not done. – Joe (talk) 10:57, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

- Not done – Hi, and thank you for creating an account to edit Wikipedia. Although I fully understand your desire to dive right in, many of our articles are semi-protected because they are controversial, prone to vandalism, or other reasons. As a new editor with few edits, it might be wise to discuss your edits on the article talkpage in order to gain consensus for your edits, and then use {{Edit semi-protected}} to request the edit be performed. I only recommend this until you are used to the challenges of reliable sources, the biographies of living persons policy, and other similar policies. The good news is that fewer than 5 percent of Wikipedia articles are protected; this means that more than 95 percent of the articles can use your help right now!
- If you have new information you can present it on the article's talk page and request an edit using {{edit request}}. Cabayi (talk) 08:01, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

- Hello! I have been using Wikipedia for four months and have made more than 1300 live edits including more than 500 live mainspace edits. Which includes creation of 20 articles, with none being deleted. I am also active in participating in AfD discussions or nominating for AfD or PROD. I recently have also become a probationary AfC reviewer and enjoying by helping with AfC. So, as I probably meet all the criteria, I thought that I would just help as NPR or reviewing new articles. Thanks! — A.A Prinon Conversation 16:46, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for your contributions and your interest in this permission. Your track record looks decent, but seeing as you were given probationary AfC rights less than a week ago, I think it would be best for you to focus on that for now, and apply for NPR permissions once you have received full AfC permissions. Not done for now. signed, Rosguill talk 20:20, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Rosguill:, Thanks for your appreciation on my contributions. But nowhere in the guidelines, it is said that having probationary AfC rights may prevent from being NPR rights granted. Having probationary AfC rights is not any of the criteria for revocation. Thinking that I may help with both AfC and NPR at the same time, I requested for the rights. I don't think that handling both will be a difficult work. So, you should trust me and grant me the rights because having probationary AfC rights does not meet any of the criteria for rejection. — A.A Prinon Conversation 08:43, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
- A.A Prinon, AfC rights are not a prerequisite but in this case I see no reason to be hasty and confer a temporary trial run to an editor that is already working on a trial run in a related field. signed, Rosguill talk 16:03, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

- Thank you for your contributions and your interest in this permission. I'm a bit concerned, however, that your track record in article contributions does not clearly demonstrate a strong understanding of notability guidelines, and I'm particularly concerned by your creation of an article at Renaissance Charter School 2; while marking it for G7 deletion was good form, the article itself left much to be desired, and I would like to see you put more distance between your current editing and that draft in the form of additional article creations and continued productive participation at AfD. - I'm not sure I see a need. Page mover's primary purpose is to assist in the moving of pages, but you don't seem to do much of that. Edit notices can be made by making an edit request on the talk page, and that may the best course of action because as much as ARBPIA is wide-reaching, I don't see how Israeli wine or The Present (2020 film) reasonably fall under the scope of the Palestine-Israeli conflict case. Anarchyte (talk) 10:47, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- That objection was raised at the time of the original application 6 months ago see here , I don't really need or want the permission for moving pages, it is only for adding the edit notice. The edit notice has two aspects, whole or in part related to IP conflict and whether it is IP related is to be "broadly construed". In practice, for editors active in the area, it is easy to see whether the notice is necessary or not, the two cases you mention (and those are not the only cases) are clearly within the scope. Frequently someone else has added the associated talk page notice but sanctions are not enforceable without the corresponding edit notice.Selfstudier (talk) 11:15, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- ARBPIA is not intended to cover every single article that mentions Israel and Palestine. Israeli wine says "Palestine" once and it's discussing raisins. Hardly a political concern. I'll concede that The Present (2020 film) likely meets the scope on a second run-through. @Primefac and Bradv: thoughts? Anarchyte (talk) 13:49, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- The wine article is at a minimum, clearly eligible for related in part, scrutiny of the edit history is sufficient to see this (the article Palestinian wine was even suggested for merging to Israeli wine). I added the "whole" because this was one where someone else had earlier added the talk page restriction and only an admin can remove it once placed. If I was starting from scratch, I would use the new partially related. If you remove both right now, I will put in the partial notice rather than the full.Selfstudier (talk) 14:11, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- Looking again, I see I did actually put the new partial edit notice even though the talk page is for the full.Selfstudier (talk) 15:40, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- And now I see that another editor (Nableezy) replaced the partial talk page notice with the full one. I think it only needs the partial but at least one editor besides me thinks it requires the full.Selfstudier (talk) 15:47, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

- I've been on Wikipedia since August 2018 and have created 127 articles (some from expanding a redirect, most from scratch). I'm on the AfC committee, so I accept various drafts into the mainspace as part of that; the majority of these drafts exist as redirects in mainspace, and since I do not have page mover rights, I have to wait hours for somebody to delete the redirect to make way for the AfC approval every time. It's the same way when I want to move one of my creations into mainspace; for example, when I wanted User:DarkGlow/Leanna moved to Leanna Cavanagh or User:DarkGlow/Liv moved to Liv Flaherty, I had to contact editors with the rights, which took a while for them to respond and perform the move. I assume the same will happen when I want User:DarkGlow/Summer moved over to Summer Ranger. So, as an AfC member and a personal contributor to the site, having page mover rights would help out with my editing on here, and lessen the workload on other editors that I ask to do moving tasks. I also have experience with moves and participating in RM discussions. I do have a block from December 2020 but this was a mistaken block, so there are no behavioural issues. – DarkGlow • 17:13, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

- One month ago, I had a request declined for rollback [2] due to edit warring and Mz7 told me to request rollback again after one month with no edit warring. Now, it has been one month since the decline in which I have not edit warred, and so I am coming back to request again. I am requesting rollback because I have been reverting vandalism with RedWarn and Twinkle so far, but it's not very convenient since I have to click on a diff to revert vandalism. - Dr Salvus, why do you keep on pushing again and again for all these rights, tools, and hats? Please edit for 6 months without any serious issues before you even start thinking about adding some right or tool to your kit. You were blocked less than a month ago, and have all kinds of warnings and issues explained to you on your talk page after that. I see you already got "pending changes reviewer" in the meantime: no idea why it was granted or why you would need it, but it is another indication of your tendency to push, push push to get as many rights as possible in the shortest time (see also your multiple requests for autopatrolled, even though you create things like this). Fram (talk) 08:17, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- Not done - I must agree with Fram here, Dr Salvus. As much as you're improving, the problems were simply too recent for any admin to consider it suitable to grant you rollback at this time. PCR is less onerous so I'm content with letting you keep that as an intermediary permission, if for little else. Your enthusiasm is respectable, you're just too eager. - I was about to say "I'd rather not" for exactly that reason :D But I don't object to this. NightWolf1223, you may like to reconsider the point of having two accounts at all. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 17:36, 19 May 2021 (UTC)

- I have had two rollback requests declined in the past, both declined because I wasn't experienced enough. I believe I am more experienced now, I have over 1100 mainspace edits, and I have been quite active in reverting vandalism, and I currently use Twinkle and RedWarn to do it. I have read WP:ROLLBACKUSE thoroughly. I currently have PCR rights, and I believe Rollback would help me revert faster, instead of waiting for Twinkle and RedWarn to load. I understand if you doubt if I can use Rollback correctly based on previous requests. Thank you. ~~ 🌀𝚂𝙲𝚂 𝙲𝙾𝚁𝙾𝙽𝙰🌀 12:59, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

- I had a request declined a few months ago due to lack of experience and a low edit count, but have gained more experience since then. I have been reverting vandalism using Redwarn (and sometimes Twinkle) in recent changes, and would like to use rollback as a tool to revert clear vandalism in an easier and faster way. My semester ends in a week and I will edit more over the summer, and would also like to use Huggle to see how it could help me in my editing. I’ve read through the information on rollback and understand how it should be used. Ben ❯❯❯ Talk 17:56, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

- I have done some counter-vandalism work with Twinkle and RedWarn, and would like to request Rollback rights so I can use it on Special:BlankPage/RCPatrol with User: Awesome Aasim/rcpatrol. ― Qwerfjkl | 𝕋𝔸𝕃𝕂 (please use

- Hello,
For the past months, I have been using RedWarn to revert vandalism. Now, I have more experience, after taking suggestions from others, and I would like to be able to use downloaded tools like Huggle. I think this will greatly improve my efficiency at reverting vandalism. My edit count is also good, and I would like a temporary rollback of 1 month, and see how I do. Thank you. - Done - as requested, I've given you a month of rollback. Feel free to return towards the end of the period to request an extension or for indefinite perms. Anarchyte (talk) 16:50, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
