Search within a category
Is there a way to do this, like using a category as namespace for a search? I was just trying to search through Polish idioms on Wiktionary, and since I can't read Polish I realised I wouldn't get far without assistance, like being able to search for a part of a word that could feature somewhere in the phrase. Card Zero (talk) 01:01, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Card Zero: yes, see search terms incategory: and deepcategory:. MKFI (talk) 13:54, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Single-use images
Are images created for a single use outside article space allowed (e.g for bug reports)? I looked at WP:IUP but nothing. interstatefive (talk) - just another roadgeek 02:47, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Non-free content can only be used within the article namespace per WP:NFCC#9; so, they can't be used on user pages, in drafts, on talk pages, etc. Any image not licensed as non-free can be pretty much used on any page, but whether it should be used probably depends on whether the same information can be provided just as easily using text alone. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:13, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Ok. Thanks! —interstatefive (talk) - just another roadgeek 03:39, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- If you need to discuss a non-free image, it can be linked to by putting a colon in front of the image name, such as File:Example.jpg. Mjroots (talk) 18:45, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Article Members of the House of Assembly of Jamaica
This title produces a list of 44 names erefrred to pages. If you browse a little, you find that it is, in fact, a list of the members for only one year in the Aseembly's considerably longer history, and that the year is 1820. It may well be that someone has simply entered the membership list to be found in one of the Jamaica Almanac transcriptions to be found on line, possibly in the site, Jamaican Family Search.
As it stands the title misrepresents the information offered, and minimises it, so that the names are presented in alphabetical order of surname, without any indication of their constituencies - bare minimu, im any such list. If you look up the talk section of the article, you are informed that few people will be keeping any sort of an eye on it, and the palce to go to to discuss it is the help desk.
There is certainly a case for an article of this kind, but this afrticle is not it. Where are the Pages?
Jim Brennan (Delahays)Delahays (talk) 10:33, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Delahays. I can't find such an article, or evidence that one has been deleted. I think you must be referring to Category:Members of the House of Assembly of Jamaica, which is not an article, but a category: it contains (links to) precisely those articles which have been added to it - if you believe there are other articles which should be in it, you can add them to it (which you actually do by adding the string
[[Category:Members of the House of Assembly of Jamaica]]
- at the bottom of the article, rather than editing the category itself).
- Alternatively, it is possible that an article could be created called List of Members of the House of Assembly of Jamaica (currently red because there is no such article), similar to List of members of the House of Assembly of Dominica (though that relates to a current legislature) ColinFine (talk) 11:41, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Category:Members of the House of Assembly of Jamaica is indeed as ColinFine describes — and most (maybe all, I haven't checked) of those in the category were elected in 1820. It seems that Philafrenzy has created articles, many of them stubs, for all those elected in that year. The outcome seems to me not altogether ideal. Maproom (talk) 14:06, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- So, like the rest of Wikipedia then? Do you wish to collaborate on expanding them? Philafrenzy (talk) 16:55, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Fusion of Berlin and Brandenburg table
Hi,
A while ago, I created an article on the Fusion of Berlin and Brandenburg, including a 1996 referendum. Problem was that I am not well-versed in editing wikitables and in addition, I simply can't find all of the numbers to complete the table; the sources are dead and so I just have to rely on the German article. So, I would like some help to just remove the "Electorate", "Invalid votes" and "votes" columns and grey out the turnout numbers for Fmr. East and West Berlin; oh, and I think I saw a table where something was subdivided, would that be possible for Fmr. East and West Berlin? That would make it possible to remove the "(whole)" designation and make it more readable.
Thank you, Maxwhollymoralground (talk) 17:11, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Maxwhollymoralground I've deleted the empty columns, but don't understand the rest of your request. If you don't receive the help you need here, try the article help page: Talk:Fusion of Berlin and Brandenburg. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:53, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
search intitle:Weekly for Article: Weekly

for: Weekly ? .... 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 18:23, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- @0mtwb9gd5wx: Weekly is the first search result for me with that search. Can you clarify what you are asking about? RudolfRed (talk) 20:05, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- look at the page, Weekly, source code.
- what is https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=intitle:Weekly as a wikilink?
- some disambiguation pages like, (fake example) foo, may have a list item all pages containing "foo" as an entry. 0mtwb9gd5wx (talk) 00:27, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- I can find only two pages in the entire encyclopedia which have an "all pages containing" link. So I don't think that this is a well accepted practice. This is one of the pages that has such a link. It uses the Search link template, but the template documentation states that this template should not be used in article space. CodeTalker (talk) 00:55, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- @0mtwb9gd5wx: You're probably looking for Template:In title. It's used on hundreds of disambiguation pages. -- R. S. Shaw (talk) 01:19, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Efficient Collection of Lists
For example I if I wanted a collection of all wikipedia pages of species of animals. The Animals category has many many subcategories, including things like "List of extinct cetaceans". This is good and useful, but I'm wondering, do I have to go through all these subcategories, collecting all of them, and all of their content in their lists, to combine them together? I.e. do I have to make a "search tree"-like data structure, then collect all leaves and hope all are accounted for? Or is there some more general way to seach for "animals". I have started experimenting with the API and couldn't find too much to help. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dnelson54 (talk • contribs) 19:16, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Have you tried using Petscan and combining categories to see if you can pull them all together that way? I've found it helpful for the work I do though I'm by no means a hotshot at it. Jessamyn (my talk page) 20:18, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Dnelson54: our sister project Wikidata is a structured database that has items for Wikipedia articles. You can build queries to generate lists. I think a recall some example queries that can climb a class hierarchy. -Arch dude (talk) 02:41, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Minimalist/Deletionist users
Is there a way to find users who identify this way? Sometimes discussions about removal can be too one-sided with users who want to keep/include. -- Franbegbi (talk) 22:32, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

- @Franbegbi: If you just want to find some deletionists, Category:Deletionist Wikipedians lists folk who have self-identified as such. But as Cullen says, don't use it to canvass editors to deletion discussions; editors who do that persistently are likely to end up blocked. Deor (talk) 22:49, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- Franbegbi, here is a relevant quote from Meta:
Few editors would explicitly describe themselves as "deletionists", rather the term is often used in a derogatory manner, as self-deprecating humor, or simply used to expose contrast with people describing themselves as inclusionists.

Password Recovery Failed
Greetings,
I cannot log into my profile.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:WikiHelper2134
I have been trying for months to get this resolved. I do not have the old email account where this was active and the password I have saved failed.
I emailed several members of the community and tried reaching out to several emails at the Wikimedia Foundation.
Do you guys have a Tech Support number or email I can reach out too? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.236.226.46 (talk) 22:45, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- No, if you can't access the email associated with it, you're SOL. PRAXIDICAE💕 22:50, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
- If password recovery has failed and you no longer have access to the email account you used when registering for that particular account, then perhaps the best you can do would be to have the other account treated as a compromised account and create a new one to use instead. You probably should email Wikimedia VRT to have your identity verified by a VRT member. Once VRT verifies that you're WikiHelper2134, the account will probably be locked. You can then create a new account and add a link to the old one to your new user page. You can also recreate your old user page on your new user page. This way people will know the same person was behind both accounts and see all of the edits you made with the old one. Finally, one thing you might want to be careful of is using an unregistered account to post questions about this type of thing on public pages like this one for the reasons explained in WP:REALWORLD. Your might want to ask further questions via email or using WP:IRC if your worried about your IP address be revealed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:03, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi all
I know I've read it several time but could someone link me to the page that relates to copyright for lists? I think its probably on Commons but can't find it. I'm sure it was along the lines of a complete list of all of the (e.g protected areas in a country) cannot be copyrighted because it is not a creative work, just a list of everything, like a phone book. A link to the relevant rules and page would be very helpful.
Thanks very much

Starting a new Wikipedia page
Hello we (about 60 active members to date) are part of a BDD (Body Dysmorphic Anonymous) support group since April 2020
We’d love to have a Wikipedia page as this group is unique and worldwide in membership
We’re listed on this site https://bddfoundation.org/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki BDA (talk • contribs) 15:08, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Wiki BDA. It is unlikely that a 60 member support group would meet the rigorous standards described at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). Simply being listed somewhere is of no value. Cullen328 (talk) 15:15, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Wiki BDA: Unless the organisation is notable, Wikipedia will not have an article about it and any attempts to get even a draft started will be futile. Wikipedia also isn't a place for promotion. I strongly suggest you read Your first article and Conflict of interest, particularly the latter if you are thinking of writing it yourself. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:16, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Delete Wikipedia Page
Good Afternoon,
I am the Director of Communications and Digital Media representing Randolph Township Schools. We would like the page representing our school district, Randolph Township Schools, deleted because it contains inaccurate and outdated information. I have tried to make edits to the page, with extreme difficulty, and without approval. We would like to have the page removed altogether as we are unable to edit our own page easily.

Suggested New WikipediA page
I would like to suggest a new page named " Fast Light" for Wikipedia. There is presently some confusion in technical literature about this topic that needs to be straightened out. I along with three colleagues published the first paper on the measurement of this phenomena back in 1970 for my PhD work at the University of Minnesota. Our publication appeared almost simultaneously with a paper from two other authors at the Bell Labs in 1970 which covered the complete theory and how the phenomena does not defy the theory of relativity. There still remains a few misconceptions in some non-referred papers about this phenomenon so I recommend it should be included as a Wikipedia article ASAP. I suggest that I provide a draft authored by me and one of the authors (the other has passed away) of the theoretical paper that appeared simultaneously with our published experimental paper back in 1970. Your suggestions please? Do you need more information? Thanks, Fred R Faxvog, PhD 1970, University of Minnesota — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frederick R Faxvog (talk • contribs) 22:51, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Frederick R Faxvog. It sounds like you're mistaking Wikipedia for something that it's not really intended to be. You might want to take a look at this, this and this for more specifics, but Wikipedia isn't really intended to be a way to resolve disagreements over something like this or serve as a publisher of academic papers. — Marchjuly (talk) 23:27, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- It seems that the concept of "Fast Light" is somehow related to photonics. So, you might want to ask about this at Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics since that were your likely going to find users who may heard of this before and might be able to provide you with more specific guidance. Whether a new stand-alone article about the subject matter can be created is unclear, but it might be possible to incorporate relevant content into an already existing article relevant to the subject matter. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:16, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Applying NOTCENSORED when the source is censored
In the article Roy Chubby Brown, there's a direct quote containing the phrase "just being a complete and utter ****hole really". I was going to replace the bowdlerized word with the actual word, presumably "asshole", per WP:NOTCENSORED. I went to the source[1] to confirm the reading, and found that the source actually prints the asterisks in place of the actual word. What's the correct thing to do here? CodeTalker (talk) 02:57, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- @CodeTalker: My opinion: our article quotes the source. It does not quote Brown directly. I would work around the problem by saying
- [the source] quotes Brown as saying ...
- and then leave in the asterisks, since our quote marks now refer to the source, not Brown, and when you quote a source, with quote marks, you are not supposed to make any changes. If we were paraphrasing, you would be free to use the word instead of the asterisks. Arch dude (talk) 04:19, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- I guess you could argue MOS:TYPOFIX... But not exactly "typographic error". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:37, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- CodeTalker's suggestion for the four asterisks only has three letters, but I can think of two other replacements each with four letters. Choosing any of these for the article would be editorial guesswork, i.e. original research. In cases like this I think we should stick with the source. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:53, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Good point on guesswork. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:02, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

- If you can't find another source, you'll have to report what the censored source says. You can't presume what the source means by "starhole". In a famous piece of German literature, Götz von Berlichingen, there is a sentence usually written as "tell him he can — — — — —" and you have to go back to the original source to find out it means "lick me in the arse" instead of the (in German) more commonly used "lick me on the arse" that I had thought it meant for most of my life. What I'm trying to say: don't presume, it can introduce errors. And yes, censorship is ****ing stupid. —Kusma (talk) 07:59, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Article use and category sorts for Stage Names.
For George Washington, in later usage, it is often "Washington lost the battle of..." and George Washington is sorted under W in categories. How are Stage names and Drag names handled? For example, Marilyn Monroe and Martin Sheen are both treated in article as if those are their actual names (and thus Monroe and Sheen as subjects in later sentences). The question is whether Drag Names should be treated similiarly and what guidance to be used for three part names such as Monica Beverly Hillz. (and for additional fun, I'm also dealing at least one queen who I don't have the birth name for (but I know the birth name isn't a deadname). I presume the answers for both Subject and Catsort should be the same for the article.Naraht (talk) 12:49, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- We do use common names (see CM Punk for example), but only in the professional capacity. The parts about the career uses Punk, whilst personal life and such is Brooks. This can get a bit more confusing for items where they might use more than one name. In terms of using a "three part name", it'll be on a case by case basis, but I'd ask on the talk. - CM Punk actually seems like a good example of where the last half of the name *shouldn't* be treated as a last name. (CM standing for Chick Magnet certainly isn't a personal name. Where is the policy on this?Naraht (talk) 13:07, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Why not? Merely because the stage name is CM Punk and not Martin Sheen doesn't mean we don't treat the word "Punk" anymore like a last name than "Sheen". It seems perfectly reasonable to do so. --Jayron32 13:43, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Because Martin is a not unusual first name, I guess. That's why I'm looking for *policy*.Naraht (talk) 14:41, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- What's unusual? Moon? River? North? A person's name is their name; unless they come from a well-documented cultural tradition that has different naming practices than English-speaking countries, like Hungary, or Spanish, or Chinese, or something like that, then is they're from an English-language culture, use English-language naming practices and collation process for such names. Whether the name is a birth name, a stage name, a changed name, whatever, if it is their name, follow the standard practices. --Jayron32 16:22, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

This was also discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject RuPaul's Drag Race#Referencing Queens by Drag name "Last Name" in Articles. (sort of a rant). TSventon (talk) 13:45, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- TSventon. I presume that note is for others, since I'm the one who did the Rant and wanted to check with the wider community before I started making changes. (And we've got truly lovely situations where the two RuPaul Drag Queens with Michaels will be treated differently, Kameron Michaels is a drag name, Chad Michaels's Birth name is Chad Michaels.)Naraht (talk) 14:41, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
How to clean up/archive my talk page
Hello,
I am wondering how to clean up my talk page. There is too many old and expired discussions there, and it is time for me to clean it all out. But, I dont know how to. I looked up relevant information but it seems to be vague to me. Is it possible for someone to guide me in steps on how to do it? Thanks a lot. WatanWatan2020 (talk) 13:22, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- See Help:Archiving (plain and simple) for instructions on how to flag your talk page so a bot will automagically archive it. --Jayron32 13:41, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

- Can you think of some articles that you have edited in the past while logged in? If you can, have a look at the edit history as this may jog your memory. This is one of the suggestions at Help:Logging in.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:00, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Go to Special:PasswordReset and enter your email address. The system will email you your username RudolfRed (talk) 16:18, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- This works only if "you did not tick the preference checkbox "Send password reset emails only when both email address and username are provided."--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:27, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Village or Town articles
Can I create and submit a article of any village or town? It will be accepted or not?103.249.7.132 (talk) 17:53, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- As with all articles on Wikipedia, any article about a village or town must cite multiple, independant sources which meet Wikipedia's definition of reliable. See general notability guidelines. For villages and towns specifically we also have WP:GEOLAND, which indicates that "populated, legally recognized places are typically presumed to be notable, even if their population is very low." However, you still need to cite sources indicating that it is a populated, legally recognized place. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:58, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Is there a way to see a list of articles I've significantly contributed to?
Hi
I'm going back over my edit history to try to make a list of all the articles I've created or significantly improved. I found a list of articles I've created but is there a way to filter my mainspace contributions by size so I can see which articles I've added a lot of information to? I know that there are several articles I've taken from a stub to much larger but don't remember them all.
Thanks

- If you want to know how Ktin got there, go to your contributions, and at the bottom of the page is a link that says "Edit count". Clicking that link will bring you to a page with all sorts of analytics and data on your Wikipedia editing history. --Jayron32 18:59, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Looking for a bot
Is there a bot that enforces MOS:STRAIGHT or MOS:NUMERAL that I could use? TipsyElephant (talk) 19:28, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- @TipsyElephant: I'm not sure about bots, but there is a script available for STRAIGHT at least: User:DemonDays64/Scripts/Dumb quotes. I am not sure there's anything for NUMERAL. Ctrl-F at Wikipedia:User scripts/List didn't work but perhaps a more thorough search will turn something up. Hopefully someone who knows more about the bots can point you toward those. - I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Table of contents in sidebar
Hi, hope this is the right place to ask about this. Looks like the Vector appearance skin has changed recently, and now the table of contents is in the sidebar, but its section titles are not clickable. I've trecked all around the preferences a couple of times but I'm unable to fix this. I've tried private navigation to see if it's a change in all of Wikipedia's code and it doesn't happen, so it looks like the problem is in how I've configured my user. Do my problem make sense to any of you? Is there something I configured wrong? Do you know where can I ask about this if this is not the right place? Thanks a lot and have a great day, --~~~~ Metalpotato - ✉ 02:36, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
