removal of White Canadians
Hi Ost, thanks for explaining the reversion related to the "White Canadian" re-direct. I understand why you did it. My underlying concern is that the re-direct, and more generally the European Canadians page that it links to, because both them seem to be based on the idea that all Canadians of European descent are "white". The European Canadians page seems to me to be trying to create a concept of "European Canadians" as an ethnic group (i.e. whites), that does not really exist. There's no doubt that some Canadians continue to identify with their ethnic or national origins from Europe (eg. Scots Canadians, Italian Canadians), but I don't think there's any basis for suggesting that some Canadians identify as "European Canadians". At least, I've never met anyone who does. As well, there is an implicit assumption that European Canadians are whites. That ignores the fact that Europe as a whole is heterogenous, and not "racially pure", which this automatic identification between "White Canadians" and "European Canadians" seems to suggest. I don't know what to do about it, however. I broke the redirect because I found it being used in the article on Racism in Canada in a way that suggested White Canadians and European Canadians are one and the same. Do you have any suggestions on what to do with a set of links that whiff of racism in this way? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 01:04, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Mr Serjeant Buzfuz: Thank you for understanding why I reverted your change, as it was largely procedural so we didn't have a blank page. I understand your concerns, but I'm not sure what the best solution would be. My best suggestion for the redirect is to nominate it at Redirects for Discussion to try to get consensus. If you want a broader discussion about European Canadians, you should start a discussion on Talk:European Canadians or create a Request for Comment. I don't think it matters if someone self-defines themselves as "European Canadian", though, as the concept can be appropriate even if the term is not commonly used. Also, keep in mind that a redirect does not have to be a synonym; it can be used as for related words and perhaps "White Canadian" is considered a subset of "European Canadian" (though that is probably debatable, too). —Ost (talk) 14:13, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. Busy in real life right now, but will try something when I have more time. The problem I have with the Euro Canadian page is that there are no cites demonstrating that there are, in fact, Canadians who identify themselves as Euro Canadians. The page seems me to be trying to use WP to develop the concept, with an underlying tone of “we’re talking about whites but can’t say that”, rather than record an actual ethnic grouping. I’d have no problem with a page about historical immigration trends from Europe to Canada, because that’s objective and data based. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 15:03, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

niagara falls moment
sailing-stub is the one you should have reached for... boat-stub is incorrect for sailing stubs, as for the allusion to niagara falls, it is a long slippery slope - probably best dealt with separately... JarrahTree 00:52, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: Sorry. I tried the nonexistent {{sailboat-stub}} and {{yacht-stub}} based on terminology on the pages, but I didn't consider "sailing". I'll try to remember in the future, though since you understand the stub categories and probably have seen this mistake before, would it be worth creating new templates like above to redirect to the sailing stub template? —Ost (talk) 01:29, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
- Never apologise - your response is positive - unfortunately I tend to be a talk page tagger rather than tweaker of redirects etc - as to the terminology - no one has ever gone to the trouble to delineate the synonyms of the sailboat/yacht/sailing - and what determines what, not that I have seen. Maybe something worth considering. JarrahTree 02:47, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Help with editing
Hi, I see you made some edits on the Arlyn page which I created. Do you think you can help me with editing by adding some sources to articles and expanding articles? I have my hand full with editing and could use any help that I can get. Davidgoodheart (talk) 13:39, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
