How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Is Template:ITN candidate/note a duplicate of Template:ITN note?
{{ITN candidate/note}} appears to be a duplicate of {{ITN note}}. The former is new, and it has no transclusions. The latter is well established and used a lot. If they are the same, the newer, unused one should be deleted unless you have a plan for it. You can tag it with {{db-g7}}. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:00, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Looks like I was experimenting with auto time-stamps. The former is just a wrapper for the latter. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:04, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. Also, I can't find any links in wikitext in Template space to {{ITN candidate/preload credit}}, which seems to duplicate the functionality of {{ITN notice}}. If it is no longer used, it can also be tagged. There is a group of us working on cleaning up unused templates, in case you are curious how I stumbled upon these. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:06, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks. My insource search failed to find it because the wikitext in the calling template uses an underscore. The joys and quirks of insource searching. I have documented those templates so that other editors are less likely to bug you with the same questions. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:21, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Category:Light characteristic different from Wikidata
Hi, this tracking category doesn't seem to be working too well - since it's populated by a line in an infobox, rather than a specific authority control/external link template, it includes quite a lot of junk (e.g., references in the infobox line) that are probably causing quite a lot of false positives. Is this tracking category worth keeping, or could the infobox code be improved to do the check better, or does it just need the infoboxes to be cleaned up? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:43, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Mike! You're right. This was me playing around with Template:Wikidata alignment which is in its infancy. If I was going to use it seriously I would improve the code by stripping references and punctuation marks, etc. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:46, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- OK, any chance the code could be improved, or the tracking category removed? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:51, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- I removed those tracking categories from the template. If I use them again, I'll try and improve the code. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:10, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! Does that mean that Category:Light characteristic different from Wikidata, Category:Light characteristic equivalent to Wikidata, Category:Light characteristic not in Wikidata, and Category:Light characteristic same as Wikidata could go? How about Category:Inception different from Wikidata, Category:Inception not in Wikidata, Category:Inception same as Wikidata? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:34, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Template:Lighthouse list contradicts WP:NAVNOREDIRECT?
Hi MSGJ. I notice that the introduction of {{Lighthouse list}} to {{Lighthouses of Queensland}} introduced a violation of WP:NAVNOREDIRECT – Yellow Patch Light is a redirect. I'm not saying this is critical, but it is visually annoying to see this violation without being able to resolve it. --Muhandes (talk) 10:28, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Muhandes, thanks for dropping by. I am trying out this approach gradually and have not sought yet comments as I was just testing feasibility. I will of course seek consensus before rolling out to any great extent. I think there are numerous advantages of using wikidata to generate the links, for example they will auto-update if articles are moved or deleted. I can see the point you are making and this may be a slight disadvantage. I notice there is a sentence in the paragraph that you linked: where a redirect represents a distinct sub-topic within a larger article and is not merely a variant name, it is preferable to leave the redirect in the template. Does this apply to this case? One advantage of pointing to a redirect is that one day that article will be written and then the link will be correct. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:19, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- I don't especially like this idea of being dependent on Wikidata for wiki links as it does not give me any control on how I would like the template to look like. However, for this specific issue you probably have a point and this is a distinct sub-topic. I tend to ignore this exception to the rule and avoid the redirect completely because of the color coding but perhaps I am overzealous. --Muhandes (talk) 19:06, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Feel free to revert my changes on that template. It was a random selection and I had no idea you were monitoring it closely. I suspect the majority of navbox templates will not be curated and may benefit from this system more. Just curious though - what is this "color coding" you speak of? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:36, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- I'm using User:Anomie/linkclassifier, which I seriously recommend to any editor. It colors redirects in a different color so they pop out. --Muhandes (talk) 19:21, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Request to help migrating lighthouse lists to use Wikidata
Hello! I noticed here that you've converted quite a few "List of lighthouses in [Country]" to use the Wikidata table template, and I was wondering whether you'd like some help migrating similar pages to use the Wikidata table template? I'm quite a new Wikipedia contributor (though I've done some editing and querying on Wikidata before) and would like to help with the consolidation of data into Wikidata. I just thought I'd ask before editing, as there may be a reason I'm unaware of as to why the other articles have not been converted over. Excited to hear your thoughts! Veyndan (talk) 20:19, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- The main reason is that it is quite a time-consuming process and there is a limit to what I can do! But I would be happy to help or at least to steer you in the right direction. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:35, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the offer — that's very kind! If you have the time, would you mind reviewing my changes to List of lighthouses in Saint Helena? I made some edits on to make it use Wikidata (and I also tidied up the column headers in a separate change). I had to add all the lighthouses to Wikidata, but I'm a bit concerned now as I'm assuming that "James Bay Range Lighthouse" is its own lighthouse, and "Rear" and "Front" are just in reference to some differing characteristics of the same lighthouse. I'm not too sure how to model that in Wikidata though, but at least it's not a regression from the prior state of the article which had also listed them as separate lighthouses. Anyway, any improvements/constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated so I don't make the same mistakes for the next article. Thanks! Veyndan (talk) 13:33, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- That looks good! I've added some more data to James Bay Range Front Lighthouse (Q110861677) so you can see the sorts of properties that can be used with lighthouses. Yes they are two separate lighthouses which guide ships when they are in line (see leading lights). I would encourage you to add references whenever possible. Rowlett calls the rear light Ladder Hill Range Rear[1] and there are some details of another one at Chubbs Point. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:06, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting, I had no idea about leading lights! I added quite a few references to things, updated the coordinates to reflect the ones in the NGA, and have also added Chubbs Point to the table.
- Regarding the citations:
- 1. It appears that this citation and this citation are trying to refer to the same thing, with the former being more correct (as it actually links to the specific page) and the latter having better formatting. Is there a way to merge these two citations together somehow?
- 2. Would it make sense to remove this citation and this citation? They're just used on the first line of the Wikipedia article ("This is a list of lighthouses in Saint Helena."), which I don't think really needs citations. These citations are also duplicates of the other citations found in the table.
- So we essentially have 5 references listed, but only 2 of them are unique. Veyndan (talk) 21:50, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- 1. Yes, they should be two parts of the same reference. It's correct on wikidata but the module is not displaying is correctly. I'll see if anything can be done about that.
- 2. Sure, if you like, but they are the actually the best displayed references on the article, with author, publisher, retrieval date, etc. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- I have also created Ladder Hill leading lights (Q110867887) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:15, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

- I'm just having a look at converting List of lighthouses in Togo over, but am having some issues finishing the creation of https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110884002 as both sources[2][3] state that there are two lights, and I'm not sure how to encode that in Wikidata for the light characteristics and range. Have you seen/added such a lighthouse to Wikidata before? Veyndan (talk) 23:02, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

broken cite q templates
Please fix the {{cite q}}
citations in List of Polish mathematicians (here) and List of Brazilian mathematicians (here – also transcluded into List_of_Brazilians#Mathematicians; as an aside, that transclusion seems rather redundant).
The {{cite q}}
template is:
{{cite q|Q237227}}
- Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus; Wissen Media Verlag (eds.), Brockhaus Enzyklopädie (in German), Wikidata Q237227
{{citation}}
: CS1 maint: multiple names: editors list (link){{Citation |editor1=Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus |editor2=Wissen Media Verlag |id=Wikidata Q237227 |language=de |title=Brockhaus Enzyklopädie |url=http://www.brockhaus.de/}}
- Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus; Wissen Media Verlag (eds.), Brockhaus Enzyklopädie (in German), Wikidata Q237227
You will note that |editor1=
and |editor2=
are not actual editors but are publishers – Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus is a publisher; at least so say our articles Bibliographisches Institut and F. A. Brockhaus. According to de:Wissen Media Verlag, that publisher ceased publishing in 2014. Still, |editor2=Wissen Media Verlag
is wrong.
Further, this citation cites the entire Brockhaus Enzyklopädie to support one or a few mathematicians. Don't make our readers search an entire encyclopedia to verify our article content. Provide in-source locations.
The three articles are listed in Category:CS1 maint: multiple names: editors list and will remain there in perpetuity unless fixed. Why? Because normal en.wiki editors are not going to venture into wikidata even if they can figure out how to get there. cs1|2 put the articles into the cs1 maint category because wikidata returns the ampersand in Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus as an html entity:
{{#property:p98|from=Q237227}}
- Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus, Wissen Media Verlag
Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus, Wissen Media Verlag
- Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus, Wissen Media Verlag
Please fix. Also, mind the {{warning}}
box at the top of the {{cite q}}
documentation

Unused WPBannerMeta sub-templates
Hey, the following sub-templates are all listed in the unused template report. As the creator of most of these templates, can you check to see if these are still needed or if they can be deleted?
- Template:WPBannerMeta/Assessment link
- Not transcluded but linked from 91 pages. Essentially this documents one of the parameters of the template.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/Conversion
- Provides some useful historical context about the conversion of project banners to the meta-template. Could possibly be moved into Project space but not sure where ...
- Template:WPBannerMeta/core/doc
- Not needed anymore.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks
- Required page. List of available additional hooks that can be used. Could possibly be moved into the /doc but probably clearer to leave as a separate page.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/bchecklist/syntax/doc
- Not needed anymore.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/numerical ratings
- Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/numerical ratings/criterion
- Probably not needed anymore, suggest TfD.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/hooks/qualimpintersect/formats
- Not needed anymore.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/substwarning
- Required. Only used when template is incorrectly substituted.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/checkextended
- Not needed, I think.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/checkimportance
- Not needed, I think.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/checknormal
- Not needed, I think.
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/editintro
- Still in use as an editintro template
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/preloadimp
- Still in use as a preload template
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/preloadmeta
- Template:WPBannerMeta/templatepage/preloadqual

I read decline from you but El C was largely talking about 2 different articles which also include this and my request has nothing to do with it.
You already noted, there is no BLP violation. And when there is none then why the revert that was made with a false claim of "BLP" violation must not be reverted? The consensus on BLPN is very clear. Captain Jack Sparrow (talk) 13:57, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
