selfie class
Hi Kyra! Your selfie class sounds awesome! I'm happy to help if I can. Since your class is so short, maybe the best approach would be to have your students (and yourself) work collaboratively on selfie, to expand it with aspects of the topic that aren't yet well-covered. We've got a system for managing courses on Wikipedia, which will let you set up a course page and track what students are doing. The way to get started is to go through the training for educators, which has instructions for setting up a course page at the end. Your students can also go through the training for students to cover the basics. You can get in touch with me by email if you like: sagewikiedu.org.--ragesoss (talk) 16:58, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Signing your posts
Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:
- Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
- With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.
This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.
Thank you. Cordless Larry (talk) 07:09, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

MY TAKEAWAYS Mr Dunn Mills (talk) 22:18, 18 July 2016 (UTC)MR DUNN MILLS
- This six-week crash course in Sociology was full of enlightening content that helped me develop my "sociological imagination" as C. Wright Mills put it. I learned to look at sociological issues and human behaviors from both a macro and a micro-level by understanding personal biographies within the greater context of history. This development has already changed my thought processes in great ways!
- Another big takeaway from our short-lived course is that I now have a better understanding of structural oppression and power differentials. Power is not necessarily something that one has, but it is something that can be found through the structures that societies' institutions (i.e. family, education, work, economy, state) create.
- Two of the Wikipedia topics that I edited throughout the course are Brexit and Coase Theorem.
Thank you @Kryaocity: for your mentorship and guidance the last six weeks! Mr Dunn Mills (talk) 22:23, 18 July 2016 (UTC)Mr Dunn Mills

In a matter of six-week course, I learned so much from my sociology class. I learned that individuals’ problems are public issues or vs.; that there are external social and political power, which are constantly shaping our society. Some of these changes affect our lives in a negative way and yet many of us might not be aware of what is going on around us. "Sociological Imagination (The Promise of Sociology), C. Wright Mills 1959". I also learned how symbolic interactionist theory, functionalism, and conflict theory are in practice in our everyday life. Additionally, I learned how to use Wikipedia and how to make contributions. My experience editing Wikipedia was that at the beginning, I faced a cultural lag; I felt intimidated. However, when I attended to a Wikipedia meetup at MoMa on June 29, 2016 after the workshop, I was fascinated about this encyclopedia and could not wait to start editing. I must admit though that I did not like the feelings when I noticed that my previous editing was reverted; I was disappointed. Despite of my reverted experience, I believe that having a free-to-the public encyclopedia where anybody can edit; it can bring more positive outcome to our society in the new media and technology era. - Through this class, I have learn many thing in regards to society. One of the most interesting terms that I learn is the sociology imagination. Sociology imagination describes that our private action are affected by our public issues. This is a concept that I have never learn before. Before taking this class, I feel that all of my consequences are a result of my own action. Through the Wikipedia project, I was able to realize an issue and do research and take a certain action on these issues. This make me feel empowered.

Throughout this course it has changed my perception of what sociology is. When I first took the course I thought that sociology was the study of society but it is much greater than that. Wikipedia represented much more than just a website it was a model to test our theories about sociology throughout the course that we learned. The most profound impact that the course had on me was the day in class in which I said the phrase "minority of minorities". It showed me that our society shaped what the definition of a minority was even though in this situation it made no sense. The sociological perspective can empower anyone who uses it in a positive fashion.

Before this introduction, I thought sociology was about the study of types of societies. What I've learned is that the study of sociology is more about how the society functions, stays together and how those inside a society interact. This course forced me to think more abstractly, developing my sociological imagination. A sociological imagination is necessary to understand and solve many social issues.

This sociology class has changed my outlook not only on society but on how sociology and the sociological imagination can be applied to just about every area of life, including Wikipedia. I learned about how to view societies from an objective standpoint in order to fully analyze and understand the similarities and differences between the customs and cultures. I also learned about the impact an individual has on society and how individual issues are a part of a much larger scale. This also lead to increasing my knowledge of power, oppression, and media levels and influences in our world. My knowledge of sociology was applied to learning about using and contributing to a new media outlet-Wikipedia. Although I was familiar with the website itself, I had no prior knowledge of what it was actually like to edit a Wiki page and to become a Wikipedian. I was able to apply aspects of sociology to learning and navigating my way around Wikipedia such as realizing how this global website has members from different cultures and backgrounds but come together to comply to the same set of rules in order to bring an objective perspective on a specific topic. Learning about Wikipedia was intimidating at first as there is a sense of alienation, but once I realized it was more like a community with a set of rules and morals, it was easier to continue working with Wikipedia and learning the ins and outs of the spoken and unspoken rules of editing. Before taking this class I saw Wikipedia as a website to provide a basic over view on a topic but not as a fully credible source, which was influenced from previous professors and their rules. However, after learning about how committed the Wikipedia community is and how often edits are viewed, reverted, and re-edited, this worldwide media outlet became more credible in my perspective. I really enjoyed learning about sociology as it is interesting and applicable to every day life. I find myself applying concepts and paradigms I learned and keeping my sociological imagination active in daily situations and interactions. Thank you for being such a motivational and optimistic professor who made learning sociology stimulating and fun! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dlou94 (talk • contribs) 14:07, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Articles I edited https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Istanbul_Atat%C3%BCrk_Airport&action=history https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Great_Seal_of_Ireland&action=history https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Al-Qaeda_in_Afghanistan&redirect=no
Through this class I learned how sociology is much more than just the study of a society, and how there are far too many things in play to ever assume that the way someone acts is due to their own faults. Before this class I was getting rather frustrated because of the actions of others, but this class helped me understand that having a problem with individual people is foolish and that the system is what really needs to be focused on. This class confirmed a great deal of information that I already knew and introduced me to my biggest take away which is learning how to apply and analyze things by using sociological imagination. The open-mindedness one needs to see what is really going on was rather intense at first and still seems to be that way. There, like I said previously, are too many factors to come up with a short handed answer that can ever begin to be considered as correct. Using sociological imagination takes time to learn and work through as one needs to switch between macro and micro information and situations. The other thing that I found amazing is that most, if not all, personal troubles are not individual problems. The society deals with everyone's personal problems collectively, and coming from someone who is twice over a "left behind" (people who lose loved ones due to suicide) I have grown more understanding of more peoples' issues and have better understood that the world is not against me. I just unfortunately fell into a fraction of society that has to deal with it. My biggest question after taking this class is now, if all of this information and definitive proof is out there why does society have yet to change for the better? Why have we not accepted these truths and just corrected the wrongs?

==Invite to the African Destubathon==Cite error: There are <ref>
tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).
Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. It could be one of the content targets for your AfroCrowd group. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African women and any topic under the sun! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles during your editathon or as independent editors, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. If you could help publicize this too and get more people involved I'd be grateful, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:55, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Weird edits
Hello! I noticed some edits like this one. You seem to have posted the template in the middle of another template that is used to configure User:MiszaBot, an automated archival bot. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 18:05, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
It seems to be a technical problem in dashboard.wikiedu.org 2.0's code. It has been reported to the developers. (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 21:51, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
Update: User:Sage (Wiki Ed) has fixed the software problem!
I found Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Hunter College CUNY/AFPRL 29026 Intro to Hip Hop Culture and History (Fall 2016) and it lists Transgender representation in hip hop music and LGBT hip hop as two separate articles, even though they should be WP:MERGEd because they are about the same topic.
The same applies to Feminist activism in hip hop and Hip hop feminism.
The redlinked article Sexuality in Hip Hop is not a suitable topic for Wikipedia, please see WP:GNG.
The redlinked article Decoded Jay Z can be found here: Decoded_(book).
The redlinked article Brooklyn and Hip Hop is not a suitable topic for an article on Wikipedia.
The redlinked article Black Lives matter can be found here: Black Lives Matter.
Please read User_talk:JustJess_PhD#Some_feedback and the section below that one.
I will ping @Kaldari:. Kaldari is an experienced editor and probably willing to help you.
(((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 18:19, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Sheridan, I'm not sure I agree with everything stated above, but I agree it is very important to pick the articles carefully, as a large percentage of course-created articles end up being deleted or merged with other articles. If it seems likely that two topics will overlap substantially (for example Representation of black women in hip hop and Misogyny in hip hop culture, or Hip hop feminism and Feminist activism in hip hop) it will save everyone a lot of work if they are combined into a more general topic from the beginning. Wikipedia strives to have one comprehensive article on each topic rather than overlapping articles covering the same ground. Also, be aware that not every topic that would be good for a school paper is suitable for a Wikipedia article. For example, I doubt that Brooklyn and Hip Hop would survive a deletion nomination. Editing existing articles, like Decoded (book) and Black Lives Matter, is often a safer route to go. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns or if there's any way we can help. Kaldari (talk) 23:58, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- ping @The Quixotic Potato:: My students were learning from their mistakes. This was my first time coordinating a WikiEdu class. Learning as I go. Thanks for the notes. It seems several of our course editors were 1) duplicating existing articles they didn't realize already existed and 2) are creating article titles (red links) that are not notable. For instance, Brooklyn and Hip-hop should probably be an subheader within the article East Coast hip hop.
Not sure why this new section showed up now or if there's anything else to be done since the course has ended.
--sheridanford (talk) 02:51, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- ping @TristanBlake:: See the comments above about Transgender representation in hip hop music and LGBT hip hop being merged WP:MERGE because they are about the same topic.
Yes, there is "anything else to be done", that is why I am here, if you want me to I can make a list... please start by merging Transgender representation in hip hop music & LGBT hip hop (see here for a failed attempt) and Feminist activism in hip hop & Hip hop feminism. If you do not know how to merge articles then you can ask for help at the WP:TEAHOUSE. Thanks in advance, (((The Quixotic Potato))) (talk) 04:09, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
- ping @The Quixotic Potato:: Thanks. I am not fully clear on your request or offer but it sounds like you want to make a list for us. A list of what exactly? And you're correct, I nor my students know how to merge articles. I will get help from our course go-to person. --sheridanford (talk) 15:44, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hiya! Thank you. I'll try to explain what I am hoping to achieve but I am not a native speaker; feel free to ask questions if I am unclear. I am not an expert on feminism.
- I think that the articles Feminist activism in hip hop and Hip hop feminism overlap in scope. Ideally we wouldn't have articles that have roughly the same scope or significantly overlap in scope. In this case I think we can merge those articles into one.
- A single article that contains both feminist critique of hip hop culture and feminist activism in hip hop makes sense to me, because they seem to be very similar albeit that one is internal and the other external.
- Combining 2 articles into one is relatively difficult, it isn't as easy as copy pasting content from one article into the other one, because we have to attribute every single edit to the correct author for copyright reasons. A detailed explanation of why this is difficult can be found on the page WP:HISTMERGE. Don't worry about the technical details, I can ask someone to do that for us.
- Do you think that it would be a good idea to combine those articles? Or would you prefer to have 2 separate articles? If you are in favor of combining them, which title would you prefer, Feminist activism in hip hop or Hip hop feminism? I know little about feminism, so I was hoping that perhaps you could give your opinion on whether this is a good idea or not.

Course page URL
Hi SheridanFord! I've had to made an adjustment to the url of your course page on dashboard.wikiedu.org; it's now here: https://dashboard.wikiedu.org/courses/Hunter_College_CUNY/AFPRL_29026_Intro_to_Hip_Hop_Culture_and_History_%28Fall_2016%29
I'm sorry for any confusion that might cause with your class; the old url included a non-breaking space character, which resulted in problems with how the dashboard posted banners onto the talk pages of the assigned articles.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:45, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

Whose Knowledge? News - February 2017
Thanks for all of your support for Whose Knowledge? so far! Get ready, we're going to need lots of your help in 2017 :)
What's new in 2017:
1. Volunteers needed
As Whose Knowledge? grows, there are lots of things to do! Can you help?
- Are you good with data entry, categories, mailing lists or social media? We especially need people to help with organizing knowledge for Dalit History Month, and building out our communications (including this monthly newsletter!) right now!
- If you're interested in volunteering for these or any other projects, please signup here
2. Pilot projects
Building partnerships and testing our approach with marginalized communities.
- Dalit History Month: We're working with Equality Labs to support Dalit communities in South Asia and the United States to map knowledge and create Wikipedia content. Dalit History Month edit-a-thons are coming in April!
- Women's Human Rights Defenders: In partnership with Urgent Action Fund, we'll be supporting a group of women's human rights defenders around the world with more mapping and wiki content creation. Themes and geographies coming soon!
- Kumeyaay Wikipedia Initiative: Following the 2016 Indigenous People's Day edit-a-thon, we're continuing to work with members of the Kumeyaay tribe in Southern California and Baja to map and contribute indigenous knowledge to Wikimedia projects. A discussion day with Kumeyaay community in San Diego is being planned for May.
3. Funding
We've got financial support for 2017!
- WMF grant: 6-month funding (February-July 2017) was approved to pilot our approach to mapping knowledge and creating Wikipedia content with the Dalit community and global women's human rights defenders. Thanks for all your endorsements!
- Shuttleworth Fellowship: Anasuya is a Shuttleworth Fellow! This means we'll be able to spend more time organizing, and have support for convenings, campaign infrastructure, etc.
4. Wikimedia Strategy
Find us at Wikimedia Conference.
- Anasuya and Siko will be carrying the Whose Knowledge? vision of diversity, pluralism and representation of marginalized communities into movement strategy conversations in Berlin March 2017.
- What's your vision for the Wikimedia movement? If you have a perspective that you'd like us to help represent in Berlin, please reach out and let us know!
In solidarity,
Siko (talk) 02:03, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Safiye Noble
I heard you speak tonight about your impending plans to move to Albany, and your research concerning the use of language as oppression. Last month I was a wonderful talk by Safiye Umoja Noble of UCLA, who is writing a book tentatively titled "Algorithms of Oppression" - her point being that search engines reinforce bias. Maybe you know about her already, but if not, here's a short talk on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRVZozEEWlE - kosboot (talk) 02:10, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks user:Kosboot! I have connected with Safiya Nobile. Discovered her talk last year and reached out to her. She also writes about black girls and algorithms. See "Google Search: Hyper-Visibility as a Means of Rendering Black Women and Girls Invisible." Good looking out. I so appreciate your reaching out to share. Hope to continue attending meetings at least once a quarter during my first year at UAlbany. You can learn more about my research on my blog. sheridanford (talk) 14:55, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon (Nov 19) and global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month (Nov 1-30)
Sunday November 19, 10:30 am - 4:00pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon | |
---|---|
The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.
Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided. We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30. Thanks, and hope to see you at the museum, and/or as part of the online Wikipedia Asian Month contest!--Pharos (talk) 16:36, 1 November 2017 (UTC) |

Two edits by former student I am most proud of
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_Ethnicity_in_the_NHL
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldstream_Provincial_Park#Restorative_Justice_and_Goldstream_Park
A white male student from Canada in my 2016 sociology summer course created the first article on the NHL. There was a race and ethnicity article on the NBA in the US but none about the NHL in Canada. In the second article, he intervened in his own inherent bias by learning why fishing was off limits to non native people at this park near his hometown. Before editing Wikipedia, he thought the law was racist. His study of the history changed his perspective. Content creation in collaborative, open-source networks matters!

Can I get a suggestion from you
for the 20th century article? I have recently been paring done the entertainers section before adding some acts to fill in voids. The list currently reads:
- The world's most popular / famous music artists of the 20th century include : ABBA, Louis Armstrong, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Harry Belafonte, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Mariah Carey, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Robert Johnson, Ledbelly, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Bob Marley, Charlie Parker, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, and many more.
.
Among things I notice that there are no Rap or Hip Hop artists included. Could you recommend one artist or act, or perhaps one of each who you feel is the apex of each genre? Thanks, Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 05:57, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- Dear User: Carptrash Suggestions for 20th Century
- Thanks so much for asking!! I'd recommend the following for Rap/Hip-hop
- Queen Latifah
- Sean Combs
- Russell Simmons
- Lauryn Hill
- Tupac Shakur
- Biggie Smalls
Others you might include:
- Paul Robeson
- Ethel Waters
- Lena Horne
- Diana Ross
- Nina Simone
- Harry Belafonte
- Patti Labelle
- Gloria Gaynor
- Earth, Wind, & Fire
- Kool & the Gang
- Donna Summer
- Pete Seeger
- Sweet Honey in the Rock
- Does that help? sheridanford (talk) 23:46, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Transactionalism: An Historical and Interpretative Study, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Field theory and Arthur Bentley (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Requesting your input
Hi! Given your interest in countering systemic bias on Wikipedia, I thought an ongoing discussion on the Yale Student Abortion Art Controversy page might be of interest to you. As you know, women who emerge onto the public sphere as "scandalous" (especially in relation to issues around sexual harassment, gender-based abuse, or reproductive issues) are oftentimes forever defined by the scandals surrounding them. At present, this Wikipedia page conflates the controversy, artist, and artwork, with a bias toward the controversy's notability over the artist and artwork's. I would appreciate your thoughts on how to improve or change the page to better reflect the artist and project. Thank you! —Vera Syuzhet (talk) 17:32, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Wikiediting - Spring Break
I've been linking other articles to the women of hip-hop and revising sentence structure to highlight women's contributions. I have yet to be reverted. I've edited (small edits, copy editing, internal links): Salt-N-Pepa Hip hop KRS-One Misogyny in rap music Feminist activism in hip hop Video vixen Black women in the music industry Ana 'Rokafella' Garcia The Real Roxanne Sylvia Robinson Funky 4 + 1 Freestyling works best when the audience is engaged and enthusiastic as well as when the group is unified and energetic in the cypher. Jazrod2316 (talk) 02:47, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
I've been composing small edits within Wikipedia when going on articles such as:
Grand Wizzard Theodore
Federal Prison Industries
I've mainly made changes to grammatical errors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jkadyszewski (talk • contribs) 21:36, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
I've mainly been doing small edits like grammatical fixes but, I've been reading each article from a black feminist standpoint and its much easier to see the gender imbalance with in Hip-Hop. I have not been reverted yet. I've contributed to articles like:
TLC
Salt-N-Pepa
Also the free styling that we did in class was cool. It was especially cool to see how the energy in the room changed. I definitely learned that its important for everybody in the cypher or group to be engaged to keep the rhythm going.Tylerm714 (talk) 23:01, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Hello Professor, So far I am learning a great deal about the culture of hip-hop. For example, I have been adding some content regaurding artists top songs, cross-linking articles and fixing minor grammatical errors. From doing this, I have read and reviewed many old school hip hop artists' pages and took into consideration the inclusion/exclusion of a feminist's perspective relating to rap and its cultural context. So far none of my articles have been reverted and i'm looking forward to doing more edits. In additon, learning about freestyling in class was great. I have never been in a cipher before and for my first time it was fun and informative. I learned how to keep the rhythm going and to respect the voice/words of the other rappers who are dropping their bars. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rileypalermo (talk • contribs) 15:55, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
Hey Professor, I have learned a lot about Wikipedia and the Black Feminist perspective of hip-hop. Not knowing much about the workings of Wikipedia, I was surprised to find out the system is so in depth. I have started going through my training learning about sandboxes, watch lists, how to evaluate articles, viewing past versions, and how to cite properly on wikipedia. I have also had a great time in class so far learning and thinking about hip-hop from the female perspective, writing ciphers and learning about the history of the art. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Camplatt10 (talk • contribs) 17:25, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
Lessons from Editing Wikipedia
From editing Wikipedia, I am beginning to realize its importance, contrary to popular belief. I am also starting to realize that it holds as much credibility as a journal or an outside article. More importantly, I am gaining hard editing skills that could be used far out, meaning both in school and outside. I am grateful for this opportunity. - Precious Pabadu73 (talk) 22:49, 13 March 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pabadu73 (talk • contribs) 22:41, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Zach Diaz missing class 3/14/19
Hi Professor G over the past few weeks I have learned a lot from editing Wikipedia. One thing in particular that I learned is that there is more on Wikipedia than I thought. I didn't know that there were pages for artists that are not as well known as others but still have their own Wikipedia page. I like the fact that I am able to edit Wikipedia and help others get information on things that they research. Zd385 (talk) 00:54, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Zach Diaz

Hey Professor G, I have been learning a lot on how to edit adding a black feminist perspective by visiting pages for female artists that are known and some that are lesser known in order to share the information I have learned and ensure I can spread the valuable lessons I have been learning from class. Thank you for all that you do and have a wonderful spring break.

Olaseni Soetan Missing Class 3/14/2019
I have been adding a black feminist perspective to pages by making sure that the information presented is correct and that the sources are reliable. I really enjoyed the freestyle that we did at the end of class on Tuesday. I learned that there is no method to it, you just say whatever is flowing from your mind. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theyoungog97 (talk • contribs) 19:17, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
Tiffany Linton Missed Class Entry 3/14
I am learning how to properly cite when it comes to making Wikipedia edits. The training has been extremely helpful when editing posts thus far. I still have a long way to go, but I have edited Grand Wizard Theordore's page so far. Last class I learned that it's a group effort so even if someone else is off, it's my job or whoever else is in our group to keep hyping them up. Troslin (talk) 05:21, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Josh Alvarez missing class 3/14/19
Good afternoon Professor G, During our wikipedia editing I have learned many things about the process and more specifically the importance of finding reliable sources. When exploring a black feminist perspective in a genre where women are neglected you must make sure to spread your knowledge by providing concrete evidence and compelling facts. In doing this I have found my searches to be more difficult being that the information is not as prevalent as it is for male artists. Overall this research is helping not only myself but others who love hip hop learn more about the women that help to make this genre so great. Have a great spring break! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xjam1937x (talk • contribs) 09:10, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College | |
Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. |

What I learned from being reverted
What I learned from being reverted today. I am trying to add crosslinks/Wikilinks between articles as I compose an article for notable producer Marcus Bell. His name appears in the Katy Perry article as a writer. I tried to add a red link to a box. The editor who brought the article to GA status reverted my edit. No problem. Learned a lesson in process. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Witness_(Katy_Perry_album)&oldid=prev&diff=893324801. Make the link after the article appears.
Will use this section to track old and new incidents when I was reverted. Go back and look at St. Vincent contributions and my twerking contributions that were reverted. Each incident is contact with a more senior editor. Most have been non-black by my analysis. Many have been male editors. One in particular female and presumably white (St. Vincent edit reverted). Some are helpful. Others indifferent -- not good or bad. I think I've learned most from being reverted. I tell my students that is when you know you are part of the Wikipedia community.
The problem for editors of color (EOC) is that when you are reverted there is lingo that refers generally to editors who do things deemed bad as "vandals". This triggers a sense of being out of place for POC or WOC. We are not vandals when we make mistakes. But lots of editors track what they revert under the auspices of protecting WP from vandals. That interface of newbies of color and experienced white male or female editors (that's been my experience thus far) is what contributes to feeling unwelcome in this highly divergent social media space. Wikipedia is text-based not audio-visual oriented. Users are not seen or heard, their words stand in and melt into others. Most don't visit other username spaces. But that's how you get to "see" who's editing Wikipedia.
- Just as a note aside from your main central point: normally, creating a red link to a person who might possibly deserve a Wikipedia page is generally fine. It shows up in red, so people know it's not a real link yet. The only real problem with the Marcus Bell link is that it's not red. Wikipedia has pages for several people of that name, and someone following the link might be confused about which Bell listed there it was, when it was actually none of them. While creating the article first might be the most effective route (even a stubby little thing, so long as it's got a couple good references to show notability), barring that you could link to where the page should be -- [[Marcus Bell (writer)|Marcus Bell]], say. That's not guaranteed to keep it in place, but it's better than linking to the disambiguation page. --Nat Gertler (talk) 19:47, 20 April 2019 (UTC)
- @NatGertler: Thanks for the clarification! I am already creating the article in my sandbox. Appreciate your feedback. How did you notice my user page note? Were you searching for it or saw the deletion and my username? sheridanford (talk) 22:59, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
- You and I had an exchange a few years back, I turned on the "following" feature for this talk page in case you added any comments here... and never happened to turn it off. So when a section with an intriguing header popped up in the feed of pages I follow. I checked it out. --Nat Gertler (talk) 23:13, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks!! Appreciate the feedback.
My editing
Hi, Professor, I'm Qiuhan, and I just re-edited some article, I believe this time I did it in the right way. I also shared some of my thoughts about translating wiki articles into Chinese, and how it will effect Chinese hip-hop culture and hip-hop feminism on my top page. It was my very first time editing Wiki, as an international student, it was a bit hard for me to understand all the process. But now, I really feel I've learned a lot! Thanks for your help and patience! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qiuhanzhang827 (talk • contribs) 22:07, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

Kyra Gaunt
Hi there. I noticed at Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University at Albany, SUNY/Hip Hop Music Culture Herstories (Spring) that "Kyra Gaunt, Ph.D." is the course instructor. When I clicked on the link to that name it took me to User:SheridanFord, where on your talk page you state "Sheridan Ford" is "the pseudonym used for this account". Your previous user name was User:Kyraocity, and a number of posts to your current user page address you as "Kyra", so I'm assuming you are Kyra Gaunt. My concern is with this edit, where Kyra Gaunt was redirected from User:Bluerabbit27/sandbox to mainspace (User:Bluerabbit27 is a student editor in your course). I see you have also been editing the Kyra Gaunt article, and I'm particularly concerned with this edit, where puffery was added. Did you direct one of your students to write a Wikipedia article about you, which you are now editing? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:01, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi! Yes, I am a student editor of Gaunt's class and the article was indeed created by me. However, in no way was the article mandated by curriculum regulation to be created nor has the instructor Kyra Gaunt instructed us to do so. I, and several other students, created the page to fulfill significant edit counts and for that purpose only. Bluerabbit27 19:12, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Bluerabbit27: Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:19, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
COI
Hello, SheridanFord. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:20, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks @Magnolia677. I did some copyediting on the edits of one of my students but tried not to mess with any of the content due to COI. I am trying to add the {{connected contributor}} but don't know how to insert my username via Edit Source. Any guidance would be useful. Will be sure to only add suggestions on talk page from here on. sheridanford (talk) 17:58, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response, and for trying "not to mess with any of the content due to COI" on an article about yourself, which one of your students appears to have written. Your students did a great job writing your article, and I'd suggest an A+ for each contributor. I noticed you edited your biography here and changed George Shirley's description from "tenor" to "acclaimed operatic tenor". Was Shirley (your music teacher) really acclaimed, or just renowned and remarkable, per MOS:PUFF? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:29, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi SheridanFord/Kyra Gaunt. I see you added the template {{Connected contributor}} to Talk:Kyra Gaunt. Thank you for doing so. You might also want to look at WP:BIOSELF for reference as well. Now, the fact that you're students have been editing the article as part of a class, even a Wiki ED course, means that they themselves also are almost certainly going to be considered to have at least an apparent conflict of interest with respect to anything written about you on Wikipedia per WP:COISELF. This means that they’re also going to be expected to comply with the same guidelines as you (see Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide) and really shouldn't be directly editing the article at all except as explained in WP:COIADVICE. They should be using the article's talk page, just like you, to request any (major) changes to the article. They should also declare their connection to you per WP:DISCLOSECOI and also add themselves to the "Connected Contributor" template you added. If they're not sure how to do this, then someone can help them. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:00, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Magnolia677, Marchjuly - I'll take the blame for the tag not being on the article's talk page. I was very closely monitoring the creation of this article since I was aware of the COI, but in the end forgot to add one of the most important parts of the process. I did try to keep the page neutral, but if I missed anything, definitely feel free to edit as much as needed. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:49, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- I twice mentioned the puffery you added. Magnolia677 (talk) 14:52, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Magnolia677, I've removed the acclaimed part. Are there any other portions that need to be cleaned up? Let me know if there's anything else. If it requires a more substantial re-write I'll work on it and post an alternate on the article's talk page. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:07, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Magnolia677 and @Shalor. Thank you for helping. I think I am learning that paying attention to the guidelines for myself and my students needs a checklist in hand. Thanks!! sheridanford (talk) 18:07, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

Wikimedia NYC: Strategic Planning Survey for our community
Wikimedia NYC: Strategic Planning Survey for our community | |
---|---|
Hi Wiki-Yorkers, We are reaching out as part of our community-building efforts at Wikimedia NYC. Our regional group is engaged in a strategic planning process to sharpen our strategy for the next three years, and we would like your input. Given your connection to us and your experience with Wikimedia NYC, I would be grateful if you would be willing to share some of your perspectives and insights as we think about our next chapter. Attached is an anonymous survey, which will remain active until February 28. Responses will go directly to Barretto Consulting and the Wikimedia NYC board will receive responses in aggregate and to identify cross-cutting themes. Please take some time to answer it and share your thoughts with us.
Thank you so much. We appreciate all your ideas and community spirit. |
