The Ohio Portal
Ohio () is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States . Of the fifty U.S. states , it is the 34th-largest by area , and with a population of nearly 11.8 million, is the seventh-most populous and tenth-most densely populated . The state's capital and largest city is Columbus , with the Columbus metro area , Greater Cincinnati , and Greater Cleveland being the largest metropolitan areas . Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, West Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Indiana to the west, and Michigan to the northwest. Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" after its Ohio buckeye trees , and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes". Its state flag is the only non-rectangular flag of all the U.S. states.
The state takes its name from the Ohio River , whose name in turn originated from the Seneca word ohiːyo' , meaning "good river", "great river", or "large creek". Ohio arose from the lands west of Appalachia that were contested from colonial times through the Northwest Indian Wars of the late 18th century. It was partitioned from the resulting Northwest Territory , which was the first frontier of the new United States, and became the 17th state admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803, and the first under the Northwest Ordinance . Ohio was the first post-colonial free state admitted to the union, and became one of the earliest and most influential industrial powerhouses during the 20th century. Although Ohio has transitioned to a more information- and service-based economy in the 21st century, it remains an industrial state, ranking seventh in GDP as of 2019, with the third largest manufacturing sector and second largest automobile production.
The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the governor ; the legislative branch, consisting of the bicameral Ohio General Assembly ; and the judicial branch, led by the state Supreme Court . Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives . The state is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Seven presidents of the United States have come from Ohio . This has led to it receiving the moniker "the Mother of Presidents". (Full article... )

Kenesaw Mountain Landis (; November 20, 1866 – November 25, 1944) was an American jurist who served as a United States federal judge from 1905 to 1922 and the first Commissioner of Baseball from 1920 until his death. He is remembered for his handling of the Black Sox scandal , in which he expelled eight members of the Chicago White Sox from organized baseball for conspiring to lose the 1919 World Series and repeatedly refused their reinstatement requests. His firm actions and iron rule over baseball in the near quarter-century of his commissionership are generally credited with restoring public confidence in the game.
Born in Millville, Ohio , Landis' given name was a spelling variation of the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain , a major battle of the American Civil War in which his father had been wounded. Raised in Indiana, he became a lawyer, and then personal secretary to Walter Q. Gresham , the new United States Secretary of State , in 1893. He returned to private practice after Gresham died in office.
President
Theodore Roosevelt appointed Landis as a judge of the
United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1905. Landis received national attention in 1907 when he fined
Standard Oil of Indiana more than $29 million (approximately $800 million in 2021) for violating federal laws forbidding rebates on railroad freight tariffs. Though Landis was reversed on appeal, he was seen as a judge determined to rein in big business. During and after World War I, Landis presided over several high-profile trials of draft resisters and others whom he saw as opposing the war effort. He imposed heavy sentences on those who were convicted; some of the convictions were reversed on appeal, and other sentences were commuted. (

The
Buckeye is a
breed of
chicken originating in the
U.S. state of
Ohio . Created in the early 19th century, Buckeyes are the only standard breed recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA) that is known to have been developed by a woman. It is the only breed in the American Class to have a pea
comb . Buckeyes are listed as "Watch" by
The Livestock Conservancy . The breed's name is derived from Ohio's nickname of "Buckeye state". Their mahogany color is said ideally to resemble the seeds of the
Ohio Buckeye plant (
Aesculus glabra ). They are a dual-purpose chicken, known both for laying productivity and meat characteristics. Buckeyes are yellow-skinned chickens that lay brown eggs. (

Edwin Taylor Pollock (October 25, 1870 – June 4, 1943) was a career officer in the United States Navy , serving in the Spanish–American War and in World War I . He was later promoted to the rank of captain . Like many naval officers, his name was often abbreviated using initials: E. T. Pollock .
As a young
ensign , Pollock served aboard
USS New York during the Spanish–American War. After the war, he rose through the ranks, served on several ships, and did important research into wireless communication. In 1917, less than a week before the United States entered World War I, he won a race against a fellow officer to receive the
U.S. Virgin Islands from Denmark, and served as the territory's first acting governor. During the war, he was promoted to captain and a vessel under his command transported 60,000 American soldiers to France, for which he was awarded a
Navy Cross . Afterward, he was made the eighth Naval Governor of
American Samoa and then the superintendent of the
United States Naval Observatory , before retiring in 1927. (
