My heroes:
- Beethoven: "Musik ist höhere Offenbarung als alle Weisheit und Philosophie."
- Albert Einstein (1929): "In all the places on earth I have visited, I've always found a group of people who believed they had to hate others."
- Anne Frank: "What's done cannot be undone, but one can prevent it from happening again."
- Adam von Trott zu Solz (1939): "The minority which sullies the name of Germany ... will prove the misfortune of the whole German nation."
- Marion Dönhoff: "Perhaps the highest form of love is loving without possessing."
- Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce: "From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."
- Bob Dylan – Poet, songwriter, performer and peerless cultural luminary.

- Hello, guten Tag, dzien dobry, labas, добрый день. I've been a Wikipedian since 2004.
- The photo above was taken in Kaliningrad, Russia, in 1998, at Kant's tomb. While I cannot claim to be a serious student of Kant, I value
some of his basic thoughts, including the motto "Dare to know" (Latin: sapere aude), which dovetails with my training in journalism.
I have a B.A. in journalism and 30-some years' experience as a reporter, editor and copy editor
– and experience as an intake officer at a state human rights agency.
- My main interest on Wikipedia is history, specifically central and eastern European history, especially that of Germany –
with a focus on the expulsion of the Germans from eastern and central Europe in 1945-49 – in which approximately 1.5 million German
civilians lost their lives. This is a topic that has received short shrift in Western historiography.
- Politically I am a liberal, and I view history with an eye on the impact of historical events on human rights.
As a young man I actively opposed the Vietnam War.
- Among my forebears were "Russian" Germans from Bessarabia (now part of Moldova), who emigrated to the U.S. in
the late 19th century and ultimately settled in North Dakota. See: Bessarabia Germans, and this article.
- I have lived in Poland and Lithuania, so I also am particularly interested in the history of these countries, along with that of Russia.
- In the late '80s, I wrote an academic paper titled, Revenge: The Expulsion of the Germans.
If you would like a copy, make a request on my Talk page or email me.
(NOTE: This interest of mine should not be misconstrued as an expression of any sympathy whatever for the policies and deeds of Nazi Germany.)
