how to publish my wikipedia
Hi, I would like to know the process to appear my wikipedia article when searching. I have published my wikipedia article, but it did not appear when I search on Google. How can I do with this and what next step should I do to have the result? Thank you. Drhao (talk) 03:27, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Drhao: Your "article" is in userspace, which isn't indexed by search engines. Furthermore, this is the English Wikipedia, and articles should be in English. Finally, you also appear to be writing about yourself, which is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:30, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Wendell Scott entry
I recently looked at the Wendell Scott article —
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendell_Scott —
which had what I believe is an outdated and incorrect warning notice:
“This article's tone or style may not reflect the encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia. (July 2013)”
In the nine years since that notice was put up, others have clearly improved this article’s tone and style and it no longer deserves that description.
I urge you to remove the warning notice.

- Hello. Anybody may remove that notice (including you) if they are satisfied that it no longer applies. However, in my view it still applies. For example,
Scott vowed as a youth to avoid such labor
belongs in a magazine article, not an encyclopaedia. ColinFine (talk) 10:15, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Multiple headquarters in company infobox?
Hi guys, is there a way to display multiple headquarters in {{Infobox company}}? There's a well-reasoned request to that end at Talk:Schneider Electric#Update to HQ Information. That infobox is not my usual metier, and while I suspect that one could manually overload the single parameter with a list if nothing else, it's also possible that there is some consensus in place to always only show one single headquarters in the box. Any ideas? --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 13:14, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Elmidae: I have no idea whether it's the accepted practice, but in Steinway & Sons the infobox field includes a list (with two locations). Deor (talk) 14:47, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Is Ian Chadwick NOTE enough for his own article?
Ian Chadwick is well known within the Atari world as the author of the "indispensable" Mapping the Atari. He is also well known in the local Ontario area as a primary writer (formerly) of CBC Radio One's Ontario Morning program and a columnist in many regional newspapers and was a local politician for three terms. The former obviously meets NOTE for itself, but I'm wondering if the sum of additional links like this one add up enough to meet author? The NOTE bar for politicians is national or sub-national, so that doesn't seem to do it on its own. 108.168.93.43 (talk) 17:19, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- As long as you have enough independent, reliable sources, sure. Club On a Sub 20 (talk) 18:36, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @108.168.93.43 - Club On A Sub has hit the nail on the head. The bar is WP:GNG, which says nothing about the qualities of the subject, but says a lot about whether they have been written about at significant length in independent, secondary, reliable sources - or, in more simple terms, if they have been noticed by reliable sources, i.e., they are notable. If you want to create an article, I highly recommend creating an account and then going through the process described at Your first article. You also might have a hard time convincing people that the subject is notable - WP:THREE is an essay that I largely agree with, stating that it's easiest to convince people by providing the three "best" (i.e. most reliable and most in-depth) sources for an article. casualdejekyll 18:52, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

- You seem to have mistaken Wikipedia for a provider of free advertising space. It isn't. AndyTheGrump (talk) 18:29, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- To expand on Andy's reply: if your winery has been written about enough by people wholly unconnected with you (and not fed information on your behalf), and published in reliable sources, to establish that it meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then there could be an article about it, preferably written by somebody wholly unconnected with the business. The article would not belong to you, would not be controlled by you, would not be for your benefit (except incidentally), should be based almost entirely on what those independent people had said about the business (whether you like what they said or not), and should definitely not contain anything remotely resembling promotion. - Charlieb1211 We prefer the term "article" and not the more general "page". This is an important distinction. Creating a new article is one of the most difficult tasks to perform on Wikipedia. It is usually recommended to first spend time editing existing articles(of which there is over 6 million), so that you gain knowledge and experience about how Wikipedia operates and what is expected of article content. However, if you still wish to attempt to create a new article now, please first use the new user tutorial, read Your First Article, then visit Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft. Question About The Page I Created
I have created a page and published it and I do not see on Wiki and I have not received any info or notifications about it at all.
Can some one get back to me to let me know if I missed anything or what it is that i need to do to publish this page that I created. Sedgwickx (talk) 19:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- Sedgwickx You edited your sandbox; typically drafts are created via Articles for Creation which provides the means to submit them. I will add this information to your sandbox so you can submit it. If you were to submit it now, however, it would be rejected quickly, as it is filled with promotional language, and cites other Wikipedia articles(which is not permitted). An article should neutrally summarize what independent reliable sources state about the topic, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of (in this case) a notable person. Please read Your First Article. 331dot (talk) 19:28, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Sedgwickx You are not required to tell us your real name, but I find it odd that you wrote on your userpage (I'll leave the full names out in case you later decide not to post it/them publicly): "My name is Txxxxxx and I am the Creative Services Director at The David Bieber Archives and Motherload International". Then you (or someone) deleted that and wrote "My name is Cxxxx Wxxxx I am a new editor to wikipedia".
- Just to be clear, a Wikipedia account is for use by one person. Is this account being used by only one person, who I hope knows his or her name? Thanks. David10244 (talk) 11:32, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

The American Dad Wiki Seasons is in the wrong order
The American Dad wiki seasons is out of order and someone needs to fix it. Its off by one season like what is said to be the 7th season is really the 6th season and whats said to be the 8th season is really the 7th, my proof is the fact on Adult Swim, Hulu and TBS which the show was renewed the for two more seasons by the latter, has all the episodes in order on their respective streaming apps, if you have Hulu or TBS its a easy search up on either one of these apps. ADA standard on Wikipedia
Hi everyone,
As interface administrator on Serbian Wikipedia, I wanted to ask something that has been brought up to my attention on our Wikipedia. Question came up where members are wondering if and when is Wikipedia going to be setting up to follow ADA standards ? From what I was able to find "The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires certain businesses to make accommodations for people with disabilities. Web content should be accessible to blind users, deaf users and those who must navigate by voice, screen readers or other assistive technologies."
Please, advise of what is happening in regards to this matter so I can "report" it to Serbian community.
Thanks !
Боки ✉ 21:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Боки - This seems more like a matter for the meta-wiki and the Wikimedia Foundation. The most I could find in a quick search was m:Friendly space policies. casualdejekyll 22:04, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Casualdejekyll, thank you for replying !
- The only thing I could see on the page you referred is that we should "take it into consideration" but nothing specific about what to do.
- I will follow your advice and ask on meta-wiki on this, in my opinion, very important matter.

- What about Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility?
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 22:56, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Trappist the monk That does not answer it. What I am referring to is ie. having whole article with audio in case if someone is blind or has hard time hearing. Боки ✉ 23:20, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- Then I guess I don't understand what it is that you are looking for. Many blind readers use screen reader software to read an article. The software does that by reading the article's html. Creating correct html aids the screen reader software. Whatever is in WP:ACCESS will help your editors at sr.wiki to write correct wikitext so that MediaWiki can translate that wikitext into correct html. I think that I have seen articles at en.wiki that have a recorded reading (presumably stored at commons) but that is something different from creating accessible articles.
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 23:33, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Trappist the monk I cannot commercialize other pages but what I mean is on some website there is button at the bottom of the page where you choose ADA tools that you can use in order to navigate page better. Боки ✉ 23:36, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Trappist the monk That does not answer it. What I am referring to is ie. having whole article with audio in case if someone is blind or has hard time hearing. Боки ✉ 23:20, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Боки: Wikipedia (whether in English, Serbian, or any of the sister projects) is not a business and to my knowledge is not bound by accessibility rules. Even if it was, going to the Serbian Wikipedia community with the hammer of bureaucracy / law might not be the wisest opening move, when you could try to convince them on merits first.
- Maybe sr-Wikipedia could be convinced to adopt a version of WP:ACCESS. Note that this is a guideline of things that should be done, and you can correct things in accordance to it, but 99% of editors do not know it exists, so it is no guarantee that any article will follow it at any point in time. The basics of it are to pick colorblind-compatible color schemes whenever possible, and use markup in a way to help screen readers.
- On en-Wikipedia there is a Wikiproject dedicated to recording spoken versions of articles. Note that recording an article is tons of work, requires a native speaker (or someone with near-native language ability), and does not easily allow updates of content (the spoken version is "fixed" to whatever date it was recorded on). Also, based on Wikipedia:Spoken articles, it started in 2005, at a time when screen readers were much less efficient than today, and the number of recorded articles per year has decreased since then. I doubt such a project can thrive without a very large contributor base (I do not doubt the editors of sr-Wikipedia community are very motivated, but they simply are much fewer than the en-Wikipedia crowd). TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 10:12, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Боки As the other editors say here, Wikipedia's content is accessible to blind users, if they use screen readers. The ADA section you quoted mentions screen readers OR other assistive technologies. Wikipedia tries to accommodate those technologies. And you might have "mis-typed", but "having whole article with audio in case if someone is blind or has hard time hearing" is weird because audio won't help the hard-of-hearing.
- If some Web sites have ways to select which assistive technologies are used, that's a bonus, and good for those sites. ... but Wikipedia doesn't do that. I hope all this info helps. David10244 (talk) 11:45, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Where can I request someone upload a file for me?
As an IP user I cannot upload files. Is there a place I can request someone do it for me? 108.168.93.43 (talk) 00:16, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, Files For Upload. 331dot (talk) 00:28, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hi 108.168.93.43. You can make such a request at WP:FFU for files to be uploaded locally to Wikipedia. Some general advice before making such a request. Try and determinine the copyright status of the file you want to upload before asking someone to upload it for you. This can sometimes be a tricky thing to do, which means you may need to figure out the provenance of the file. If you're unable to determine the file's copyirght status on your own, you should assume it's protected by copyright (at least for the time being) and seek assistance at either WP:MCQ or c:COM:VPC. Once you figure out the copyright status of the file, you should then figure out whether it should be uploaded to English Wikipedia or Commons. Commons only accepts freely-licensed and public domain content per c:COM:FAIR; it won't accept any copyrighted content without the copyright holder's c:COM:CONSENT. Wikipedia does, on the other hand, accept copyrighted content as non-free content for use on English Wikipedia only, but only when its use satisfies Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. So, if you're request that someone upload a non-free file for you, make sure you clearly state in which article the file is intended to be used and how it's intended use satisfies relevant Wikipedia policy. It would even be helpful if you could provided an example non-free use rationale explaining how the file's use is policy compliant. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:31, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

- Sure thing. Thanks. Take flickr, for example. Photos on flickr uploaded by individuals are by definition WP:UGC / WP:SPS and therefore fail WP:SPS. There's a bunch of railway articles that I have already cleaned up where someone has used a photo of some random rusty locomotive in a goods yard, or a train in a station, as a reference using the aforementioned <ref> .... </ref> either as a bare URL or with {{cite web}}. My modus operandi on Wikipedia is a balance of adding content and cleaning things up. Sometimes I do one more than the other and right now I'm enjoying cleaning things up. - @Bace word This may or may not be a helpful response, but the answer to "How much time should (you) spend on Wikipedia?" is more or less, "However much time you want and can afford to spend on Wikipedia." Don't let Wikipedia cost you your job, your relationship, your health, or your sanity. You can't afford that. However, if you get joy from spending 1-2 hours a day/week/month/whatever doing research, writing articles, verifying citations, copy editing, etc., then do that. If you occasionally spot a typo while reading an article and it scratches an itch to correct it, but you don't have big blocks of time to contribute, then fix the typos. If you think it's a fun scavenger hunt to make a list of places near you missing photos and spend all weekend driving around taking photos and adding them to the articles as appropriate, then feel free to dedicate a weekend a month, or every two months, or every year to doing that. If you are recovering from major surgery and suddenly find yourself with nothing to do for a few weeks but edit, then use that time. If you find yourself doing research for school or something and can improve articles based on research you are already doing anyway, then do that. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:53, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Why my contribution was denied
Hi,
I would like to know why my contribution was denied. I added a citation on the Charter school wiki page. However, this citation on the word "ASVAB Test" leading to https://www.todaysmilitary.com/joining-eligibility/asvab-test was denied. A representative from Wikipedia sent a message saying "Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, you may be blocked from editing. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion."
Please offer any additional information for why this happened. I am not advertising.
Thank you. Balib1011 (talk) 20:21, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Your only purpose here seems to be to insert spamlinks to a certain non-notable commercial website. We have no interest in increasing that website's SEO results. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:23, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi,
- These are not spamlinks, nor is this a non-notable commercial website. This website, https://www.todaysmilitary.com/, is produced by the United States Department of Defense. We are adding our citation links in effort to be helpful on Wikipedia, not to promote spam or advertise. Balib1011 (talk) 20:28, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- If it is a government website, as opposed to one run by an ad agency or something, why is it a .com domain rather than a .gov one? --Orange Mike | Talk 16:13, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- An argument by bizarre definition, to be sure. You shouldn't be adding links from agencies you work for in the first place due to the obvious conflict of interest that entails; the best practice here is to discuss whether or not the link should be added on the relevant article's talk page. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 20:32, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Balib1011 The purpose of citations in Wikipedia is to let readers know where we got our information; not just to "be helpful". It appears that you are adding that link in an effort to drive traffic to todaysmilitary.com. This is the definition of spam. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:39, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Balib1011 Please see your user talk page; you must declare as a paid editor. I've provided instructions there. 331dot (talk) 20:36, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- I just want to note that the website is produced by the US Department of Defense, despite the .com suffix, see here and the copyright statement at the bottom. There may be many reasons why it would use the .com suffix, primarily because of the marketing value, but that is irrelevant here. It is also irrelevant that it is a government website. Adding links to Wikipedia is not done willy-nilly. The site is basically a recruitment tool for the US Department of Defense, basically a job advertisement site, and as such is of limited utility towards any page at Wikipedia. Given its purpose, it's not really useful, regardless of who produced it. --Jayron32 16:40, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
Payment.
Is there any way I can set up an annual payment to Wicki? Won't be much as I am a Pensioner but even though I use it seldomly I feel that it is a free speech platform where information is given without bias (except that of the author which is normally unconscious) and seriously feel sorry that Wicki has to keep asking each year.
Alan D. 92.40.49.192 (talk) 23:39, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not a free speech platform, nor is it without bias(nothing is), though we strive for a neutral point of view. We don't handle donations, please go to donate.wikimedia.org for more information about how you can donate. 331dot (talk) 23:48, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- @92.40.49.192 Please be aware that the Wikimedia Foundation is a separate entity from Wikipedia. With that in mind, Ways to Give has the information you need. casualdejekyll 23:48, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Alan D, please be aware that the sponsoring Wikimedia Foundation currently has assets of US $239,351,532 and that dollar figure has been skyrocketing in recent years. If you are short on money, it is not at all necessary for you to donate money. Improving articles would be very helpful, and you can do that for free. 02:18, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Editing a page
On the Page of Isaac Abarbanel it says his burial sight is unknown. That is NOT TRUE. I visited is burial site and I have a photograph of the grave. That is my reference. I am an Abarbanel descendant. I visited his gravesite in 2014 accompanied by the local rabbi. I edited this page and you deleted it because of my source. How can this be remedied? I can submit the photo. Abarbaneledit (talk) 02:46, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- As a matter of principle, we insist on information coming from published sources, not the assertion of some random person on the internet. Your assertion was not backed by any published source(s). --Orange Mike | Talk 03:30, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Abarbaneledit: However, by convention we consider a gravestone (or other written monument in a public place) to be "published". Therefore you can upload your picture to commons and add it to the article. Go to Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard to see how to upload the picture to commons. As part of the upload process, please be meticulous about the date, time, and location when when you took the picture: This information must be sufficient to allow another interested party to find the grave. I personally prefer to use the precise GPS co-ordinates. -Arch dude (talk) 03:48, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- I thought that information engraved on a gravestone is indeed "published" but is not considered "reliable" for use on Wikipedia. First, in most cases there is no way to tell whether the gravestone refers to the subject or to another person with the same name, and second, there is in general no fact-checking done on gravestone inscriptions. (I know that the text inscribed on my mother's gravestone is just whatever I wrote on the cemetery's form, which was accepted with no fact-checking.) For example, Find a Grave is not considered a reliable source, even though most Find a Grave entries include a photo of the gravestone. A photo of a gravestone could be evidence that the gravestone exists, but probably not much more than that. CodeTalker (talk) 21:05, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
anonymous revert without reason?
If someone makes a (bad) revert to an edit, but does so anonymously and with no reason given, am I supposed to engage them on the talk page even if they would not see it unless then have a log-in with a watch page? It concerns this revert. tahc chat 03:18, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Tahc: engage on the article's talk page. Depending on the situation, you may need to revert their revert with a comment to look at the talk page, but be careful of the "three revert" rule (WP:3RR). If you are using valid edit summaries and making an effort on the talk page while the anonymous editor is reverting but not responding, come back here and maybe someone can give you better advice. -Arch dude (talk) 03:38, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Tahc, you can do what I did:
- assess the edit: it was both against the year-linking policy and ridiculous
- assess their talk page: a long tale of reversions and ignored warnings
- fearlessly click the red "Vandalism" link on the diff page
- leave a final warning on IP user's talk page
- When the unconstructive, WP:NOTHERE editing is this bad, there's no need to hesitate. Quisqualis (talk) 06:11, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Where can I post
I just finished a fairly in-depth copy-edit of Kalighat painting. I left the references tag up because I suspect there may be good sources in languages I do not speak, and while there are 15 sources the article is quite long, and perhaps relies rather heavily on long lyrical quotes. OTOH two of the authors have an Wikidata entry but no Wikipedia article, so there may be a project there for someone. I was wondering if you could suggest a place to list it. I was looking for, but did not find, a portal for Bengali art, for example. I think that there is the making of a Good Article, but while I enjoyed working on it, I already.have a lot of projects, and I think another better-qualified editor probably could be found for this one? Any suggestions? Elinruby (talk) 04:58, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Elinruby There is a currently active Project at WP:INWB where they have the ambition to make Culture of Bengal a featured article. There ought to be editors who you could reach via one of the Project Talk Pages. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:52, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Approval of a new article
Good afternoon!
My name is Elene, I am logged in es elenesali in Wikipedia.
I created an article about Legal Design, it is now in moderation as far as I understand.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Legal_Design
Could you please tell me how long does it take for an article to be uploaded fulfully?
When the word draft will no longer be next to the name of the article?
I will be waiting for your response
Kind regards,
Elene Kalandiia Elenesali (talk) 11:56, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Elenesali: it can take months for a draft to be reviewed. When a reviewer decides to take it on, they will either "move it to mainspace" and remove "Draft" from the title, or decline it, explaining how it does not meet Wikipedia's standards. (I observe that the opening section of the draft uses a lot of jargon, making it hard to understand.) Maproom (talk) 12:07, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Your draft Draft:Legal Design hasn't actually been submitted for review? Theroadislong (talk) 12:12, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Your draft hasn't been submitted for review. Unless it's submitted, it will never be reviewed. If you were to submit it now and I were to review it, I'd fail it. Entire sections are virtually or completely unreferenced. And it contains material such as Legal design is an interdisciplinary approach based on human-centricity applied in legal activity [...] I don't know what this means, and the thought occurs to me that perhaps it doesn't really mean anything. (What are the alternatives to being based on human-centricity? Etc.) If it does mean something, then this something needs to be expressed more clearly. -- Hoary (talk) 13:18, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your response, I appreciate it a lot. I will try to fix it! Elenesali (talk) 13:52, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Elenesali I see that the draft was submitted for review, and the "human-centricity" thing is still there. I don't understand that either; it sounds a lot like marketing-speak. Also, you could fix the grammar issues while you wait for the review. David10244 (talk) 05:51, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Help Needed to Retrieve Deleted Page

- Instructions for retrieving deleted pages are at WP:REFUND. --Jayron32 14:12, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- I guess this is about Draft:Adventrum, speedy deleted 29th November as blatant promotion by Bbb23. As a non-admin I cannot access the deleted revisions to see how bad it was or how much can be salvaged, however, see Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles for a list of people who might email the draft text to you (to my knowledge requests for G11 deletions rarely recive anything but a rubber-stamp decline at WP:REFUND) Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 14:23, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Adaline Lefe - If you intend on working on the deleted draft,
please be aware of policies such as Conflict of interest which require you to disclose if you're being paid by your employer to write an article.I see that you have disclosed this on your user page. Remember that statements in an article should be cited to reliable, secondary sources (with few exceptions). Focus on the quality of sources: WP:NCORP is a stricter guideline then for non-company topics. casualdejekyll 14:35, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Adaline Lefe - If you intend on working on the deleted draft,
- @Adaline Lefe I have taken a look at the deleted draft and, it's bad. Frankly, I don't think there is much in it that is salvageable as a Wikipedia article. However, I would be willing to restore it if you want to work on it; just know that there is virtually nothing there that is acceptible on Wikipedia. If you want it for some purpose other than hoping to create a Wikipedia article, then I can e-mail you the text. How the hell do I connect this bus routemap?
This is my first time making a routemap, so bear with me if I'm doing this horribly wrong. Its taken me about an hour to figure out how to merge the lines back together after Bentley, and that involved flicking through numerous other bus and/or rail templates, but now I just need to... well, turn the splitting point upside down, and I'll be set. Logo of a software application
Hi, I'm writing a page about a software application and I want to show its logo. If I uploaded it on commons.wikimedia.org, what are the right license to use? Mabdelaal86 (talk) 22:01, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Mabdelaal86 In short, we don't upload logos on Commons since Commons don't accept non-free pics. You upload it to WP, see WP:FUW. Choose "Upload a non-free file", then "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use." then "This is a logo of an organization, company, brand, etc."
- However, you can't put non-free pics in drafts, so you do this first when your draft has been moved to article-space. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 22:32, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Just going to clarify that logos can be uploaded to Commons as long as it can be shown that either (1) the logo is too simple to be considered eligible for copyright protection or (2) the logo has been released by it's copyright holders under one of the free-licenses that Commons accepts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:29, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Link to another page
I am trying to add a link to the name Maya Wiley from a page of people with that surname to an existing page for Maya Wiley. Mousing over the link shows a 'page does not exit' error, but it does.
On the Wiley disambiguation page there is a link to that same page that works. (Also, I created a sandbox link to Maya Wiley that works.)
Here's what I wrote which does not work, followed by the other reference that does.
- Maya Wylie, (born 1964) American lawyer, professor, and civil rights activist
Maya Wiley, American civil rights activist and lawyer, 2021 mayoral candidate for New York City
I don't know why my link to Maya Wylie's page does not work. Cuchulain9 (talk) 02:03, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Cuchulain9. Please check the spelling of the link you're trying to add because "Wylie" and "Wiley" are not spelt the same. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:33, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Well, that would explain a lot. I'm quite familiar with her and spelled it right in the sandbox as well, which explains why it worked there! Don't know the reason for the 'thinko'. Thx. Cuchulain9 (talk) 05:00, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Isaac Abarbanel page
I tried 4 times to allow you to change a fact on this page. It says his grave is unknown. IT IS NOT UNKNOWN. In 2014 I visited it in the Jewish cemetery in Padua, Italy. I sent a photo. You make it impossible to change this one thing. My iPhone photo is not copyrighted. I gave full permission for you to use it. My Abarbanel relatives have tried to get me to change this page for years. I finally tried to. I now give up. This is ridiculous that it is so complicated. The photo clearly shows the graves. Abarbaneledit (talk) 05:24, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- The Isaac Abarbanel article is not very good (lacks sourcing), but if his grave is known according to modern historians, this will be noted in some sort of WP:RS, like scholarly literature (history books etc). So, what have you got? You saying "I have a picture of his grave I took" isn't good enough in the WP-context, see WP:ISAWIT. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:36, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Abarbaneledit. There have likely been dozens or hundreds of people named Isaac Abarbanel throughout history, most of them completely obscure. How can anyone know for sure that your photo is of the grave of this specific Isaac Abarbanel? That is why we require a reference to a published reliable source. For example, my grandfather was named James Heaphy, my father was named James Heaphy, I am named James Heaphy and my son is named James Heaphy. And now that the internet has come along, I have learned that there are many other James Heaphys from New York to New Zealand and points in between. I know that there were two people with identical names working in very similar fields in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 20th century, and that they died within a few days of each other. Even local journalists got confused. We need to be cautious. Cullen328 (talk) 08:01, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- According to Encyclopaedia Judaica [2] his grave is unknown, but things may have happened since that was written. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:18, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- I'd say that the photo of the plaque clearly shows that the location of his remains is unknown:
I resti mortali sepolti nel cimitero di Borgomagno 1450-1529 qui furono translati nel 1955. E' tradizione che tra queste ossa riposino quelle di Don Itzchak Abrabanel e di Yehuda' Minz.
- Per Google Translate:
The mortal remains buried in the Borgomagno cemetery 1450-1529 were translated here in 1955. It is a tradition that among these bones rest those of Don Itzchak Abrabanel and Yehuda' Minz.

- @Southmallcity: Please see Special:Captcha. Specifically, it says "on Wikipedia you may be asked to fill in a CAPTCHA when adding new web links to a page, when you attempt to create an account, or when you enter your password incorrectly. Unfortunately, this may inconvenience users with limited vision or using text-based or speech-based browsers. At the moment we do not have an audio alternative available." — B. L. I. R. 10:44, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Southmallcity:, can you explain in detail what difficulty you are finding? There is a common error (of clicking the wrong button) that some people make (including myself at one time), but this may be totally unrelated to your problem, so I won't elaborate at this point. {The poster foremrly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.213.188.15 (talk) 07:42, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Scientific notation with the {Convert} template
I want to use scientific notation on a large number where the {Convert} template is used to also convert the number to its value in alternative units.
Have looked at Help:Convert. Is not explained there. Only the suggestion that the |abbr=unit parm should be used when using scientific notation is mentioned there.
So where is the HELP for the Convert template to use scientific notation. I've not been able to find it. Cheers. N2e (talk) 13:47, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Have you looked at Template:Convert#Scientific notation: 1.23 × 10−14? - David Biddulph (talk) 13:53, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- But looking at that again & trying it out in my sandbox, it doesn't seem to do what it says. On a quick check it seems to be numbers >= 10e10 that get converted, not numbers >= 1000. You may wish to ask at Template talk:Convert. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:06, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your help David Biddulph! No, I had not yet looked at Template:Convert#Scientific notation: 1.23 × 10−14. Did not know that page existed. Country name + flag for a 'country' without an ISO code
For getting the name of a country plus its flag in front, you use th ISO thre-letter code in braces, e.g. {{USA}} -> United States. But how about 'half-countries' without an ISO code? Question is motivated by Country_codes:_A #Alderney and some others in this overview. --KnightMove (talk) 19:55, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

- Well, most of the headlines on most pages in this overview (e.g. Country codes: C) do that already. So it would be appropriate to change this to non-flag? --KnightMove (talk) 07:16, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

- Hello. Please refrain from having multiple users under one account, it is against Wikipedia's policies. Also, if you have any conflict of interest, please declare that on your user page. Club On a Sub 20 (talk) 20:42, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- I'd start by reading Wikipedia:Notability (people). From a quick online search, I can't see any obvious evidence that Chaplain Nielsen has been the subject of the sort of significant coverage in independent published reliable sources necessary to meet our criteria. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:43, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Please note that trying to create an article before you have spent time learning how Wikipedia works and what its requirements are is often frustrating and miserable. We delete hundreds of articles and drafts a day, many of them by people who have started before they are ready. And if you are connected with the subject (so you have a conflict of interest) it is even harder, as you will need to forget everything you know about the person - and, especially, forget your opinions about them - and write based only on what the independent sources that you have found say about the person. Please read your first article, as well as about notability. ColinFine (talk) 22:05, 8 December 2022 (UTC)

Fundraising. The Wikimedia Foundation does not track the identity of IP addresses, so it doesn't know your age, income level or whether you donated in the past.
None of the Wikipedia volunteer editors here who add and improve content in articles receive any financial benefit. We all simply contribute our time because we care about building a great encyclopedia for you and innumerable others around the world to use.
If you cannot afford it, no one wants you to donate. Wikipedia is not at risk of shutting down, and the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the Wikipedia platform and is asking for these donations, is richer than ever.
We are led to believe that users who allow cookies are less likely to see these banners on repeat visits (further information is available here), and you are welcome to communicate directly with the donor-relations team by emailingdonate@wikimedia.org

- StarryNightSky11 I see no edits by you to create an RFA nomination, so whatever you did was not published. I would advise you against nominating yourself, however, as the odds of success for you are very low. You don't have the edit history required, and you haven't demonstrated a need for the tools. 331dot (talk) 00:48, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- 331dot, [4].
- StarryNightSky11, I have to second 331dot's advice. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:53, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- I would echo 331dot's comment. You should not go through with an RfA at this time. WP:ORCP is open to you if you want feedback on your 'readiness'; personally, my impressions is that an editor with fewer than 10,000 edits would have to have an extraordinary track record, and a very expressed need for the tools, to be accepted by the community. AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intelectual Property Right Distribution Fund
Why is there no page for the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intelectual Property Rights Distribution Fund aka AFM & SAG-AFTRA Fund? Everytime I see AFM & SAG-AFTRA Fund you guys have a link going to either one of the unions, AFM or SAG-AFTRA. The AFM & SAG-AFTRA Fund is a separate intity from those two unions and their website is https://www.afmsagaftrafund.org/. Can someone look into this?
SidSyd (talk) 00:59, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @SidSyd:Wikipedia editors are volunteers, and each of us does whatever tasks we wish to do, with almost no co-ordination and with no central planning. There are no "you guys" to respond to you. There are about 100,000 active editors in any given 30-day window, and perhaps 50 of them (us) are active on the help desk. If you think an article is needed you have as much right and responsibility to create that article as any of the other 100,000 active editors. Please look at WP:YFA to see how to proceed. -Arch dude (talk) 03:06, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, SidSyd. I am a Northern California editor who was in Southern California in 2015 to visit with a Wikipedia editor from Iceland (long story). While there, I happened to take a photo of SAG-AFTRA headquarters. So, I have paid a little bit of attention to this union over the years but I am far from an expert. The fact of the matter is that you are probably the Wikipedia editor most interested in the "AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund". Accordingly, if you think that there should be an article about this topic, it is incumbent on you to write the article. I will be happy to offer advice but you will need to do the heavy lifting. Fair use images
Hi, Sri Lanka does not have the Freedom of panorama. It would be a shame if many landmarks deprived of an identifiable image. So can fair use images be used instead in such articles? Regards. Chanaka L (talk) 08:56, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @chanakal: it would need to meet the 10 criteria for non-free images. lettherebedarklight晚安 10:39, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Lettherebedarklight: I have uploaded a dozen or so fair use company logos before, so I am aware of those criteria. I wanna know whether that works for panoramas as well? Cheers. Chanaka L (talk) 14:30, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- The very first of the criteria you were pointed to above, is "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created" Almost all panoramas can be created, by visiting the place and taking it yourself, so they fall at the first. - Please also see Wikipedia:Freedom of panorama which explains that (in most circumstances) we are covered by US law, not local law. [[Arjayay (talk) 14:45, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Chanakal To be specific, that means that the Sri Lankan images have to be uploaded to the English Wikipedia using the {{FoP-USonly}} template but they do not have to meet the criteria for non-free images. However, unlike logos you may have uploaded in the past, you must own the copyright, which in practice usually means you took the picture yourself. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:18, 9 December 2022 (UTC)

Indian or Native American or First Nation?
I am working on an article called United States Government Indian Trading Factories, 1795-1822.
What term for Indian is proper and politically correct to use. Creuzbourg (talk) 17:03, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Creuzbourg. I suggest that you read Native American name controversy. This is an unresolved issue. First Nations is a term associated with Canada. Since you are writing about events in the United States 200 years ago, I suggest that you use the common term of that era, which was Indian, perhaps with a clarifying note linking to Native Americans in the United States. The existence of the National Congress of American Indians indicates that the term Indian in this context is not defunct. Cullen328 (talk) 17:28, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Creuzbourg If you're writing for Wikipedia, then you need to bear in mind WP:COMMONALITY: as a non American-English speaker, I would understand "Native American" to mean what I think you're intending. "Indian" is ambiguous for me, even if not as "politically incorrect" as it might be elsewhere; and "First Nation" is not a term seen much here. Native Americans in the United States seems to agree and gives links to other articles on the same subject. Bazza (talk) 17:30, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
- Generally, for the indigenous people of what later became the lower 48 states, the general consensus is that either "Native American" or "American Indian" is appropriate when speaking of such people in a general context, while noting the specific people group or nation (such as Wampanoag or Navajo) may be more appropriate when referring to a specific person. In general it is better to use "American Indian" than just "Indian", which in most of the world means someone from India, but there is often no preference for between either "Native American" or "American Indian" as long as one is consistent within the same article. --Jayron32 17:52, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Wikitionary Question
Hello. I recently created a page for the etymology of the Persian word "رای." I was trying to enter my citations but i got an error stating that I was spamming. The error also said that I could get my account banned, which i obviously do not want. Could somebody elaborate why this is? or possibly enter the citation for me? this is the citation I would like to enter:
Qaemmaqami, A. R., & Khatebey, A. (2013, July 9). رای و رأی ([New Persian] rāy and [arabic] ra'y). Academia.edu. Retrieved December 9, 2022, from https://www.academia.edu/3992194/%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C_%D9%88_%D8%B1%D8%A3%DB%8C_New_Persian_r%C4%81y_and_Arabic_ra_y_
This is the link to the page: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D8%B1%D8%A7%DB%8C
There is also a Persian word "رای" of Arabic origin, however the words are distinct in their etymology and pronunciation. Maybe Wikitionary thought I was creating another page for a word that already has a page? I am very confused and would greatly appreciate some assistance.
