Om Birla (born 23 November 1962)[3] is an Indian politician, agriculturist and social worker who is serving as the 17th and current Speaker of the Lok Sabha since 2019. He serves as a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha[4] from Kota-Bundi constituency in Rajasthan since 2014. He was also a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly representing Kota South Assembly constituency from 2003 to 2015. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Early life
Om Birla was born on 23 November 1962, He completed his master's degree in commerce from Govt. Commerce College, Kota and Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer.[5] He married Amita Birla in 1991 and has two daughters Akansha and Anjali.[6]
Om Birla was born in the Indian state of Rajasthan on November 23, 1962[3] to Shrikrishna Birla and Shakuntala Devi in a Marwari Hindu Maheshwari family. He obtained his master's degree in commerce from Govt. Commerce College, Kota and Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer.[5] in Rajasthan and began his political career as a member of the Bharatiya Janta Party’s Youth Wing, Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM). Om Birla is a well-known Indian politician who now serves as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, India's lower chamber of Parliament. He was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in 2003, representing the Kota South constituency. From 2003 until 2013, he was a member of the assembly for three consecutive terms (2003, 2008, 2013). He is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and has served as a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2014. Birla was elected as an MP from Rajasthan's Kota-Bundi district in 2014. He was re-elected in 2019 and took over as Speaker of the Lok Sabha on June 19, 2019. As Speaker, Birla is responsible for maintaining order and decorum in the Lok Sabha, as well as ensuring that the house's activities follow the norms and procedures outlined in the Indian constitution. Om Birla is a devoted and experienced politician who has distinguished himself in serving the people of India.

Political Career
Legislative Assembly
Om Birla won his first assembly elections contesting from Kota South in 2003. He defeated Shanti Dhariwal from Congress by a margin of 10,101 votes. In the next assembly elections, he defended his seat with a comfortable margin of 24,300 votes to his nearest candidate Ram Kishan Verma from Congress in 2008. Before becoming a Member of Parliament, he won his third assembly election against Pankaj Mehta (Congress) by close to 50,000 votes in 2013. During his tenure in 2003–08, he was the Parliamentary Secretary (MoS rank) in Rajasthan Government.[citation needed] First Term (2003 - 2008)
First Term (2003 - 2008)
Om Birla won his first assembly elections in 2003, when he ran from Kota South. He defeated Congress candidate Shanti Dhariwal by a margin of 10,101 votes. During the Thirteenth Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha, he raised over 500 questions and was named Sadan ke Sitare (Star of the House) six times. He also served as the Parliamentary Secretary (MoS level) in the Rajasthan Government from 2004 until 2008.
Second Term (2008 - 2013)
In the 2008 assembly elections, he defended his seat with a comfortable majority of 24,252 votes over Congress contender Ram Kishan Verma. During this tenure, He served as the Member, Committee on Public Sector Undertakings and General Purposes Committee, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.
Third Term (2013 - 2014)
In 2013, he won the third assembly election by approximately 50,000 votes over Pankaj Mehta (Congress), and in 2014 he vacated his seat to run in the 2014 General Elections from the Kota-Bundi Parliamentary Constituency.
Member of Parliament
As the BJP candidate for the Kota constituency, Birla was elected to the 16th & 17th Lok Sabha.[7]
First Term
In the 16th Lok Sabha, he was a member of the Standing Committee on Energy and Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.[citation needed]
His selection for the post of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha surprised many including MPs from the treasury bench.[citation needed]

On the 19 June 2019, during his second term, Om Birla was elected Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha, following a motion for election moved by Prime Minister Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam parties also moved notices for Birla and urged him to be impartial as presiding officer of the Lower House.[8] The parliamentary convention for the Republic of India is for the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha to come from the Opposition benches.

Question Hour functioned for 95% of its scheduled time in Lok Sabha. During the tenure of Om Birla as Loksabha Speaker, 94% first-term MPs participated in a debate during the session; 96% women MPs participated which is highest till date. This is higher than any other session in the past 20 years.

Zero Hour
Due to the diligent efforts of Om Birla as the Speaker, the 17th Lok Sabha witnessed a significant achievement. The House convened for a total of 114 days and effectively addressed 3,389 matters of urgent public concern during the zero hour. This remarkable feat surpassed the average number of issues discussed in the previous two Lok Sabha(s). Om Birla's exceptional performance during the zero hour earned him the commendation and recognition of his fellow parliamentarians, who refer to him as the "Hero of Zero Hour."
Socio-Economic Initiatives
Green Kota Campaign
Green Kota Campaign was launched with the involvement of social, religious, and trade organisations to plant one lakh trees to protect the environment in Kota (Rajasthan). All households received saplings, including Tulsi.
Social Initiatives
Birla has been noted for his great emphasis on social welfare and development throughout his political career. He has strived to improve the lives of the impoverished and vulnerable members of society by participating in a variety of social and cultural activities.
Birla is well-known for his leadership abilities and ability to connect with people. He is regarded as a clean-cut politician with a strong commitment to the development of his constituency and the state of Rajasthan.
Suposhit Maa Abhiyan
Suposhit Maa Abhiyan was launched on 28 February in Kota Bundi Parliamentary Constituency of Rajasthan with public participation to address the nutritional deficiency problem in pregnant women and adolescent girls. Nutrition kits were provided to 1000 pregnant women and adolescent girls in the slums who were nutritionally deficient.
Hospital On Wheels
Shri Om Birla is constantly working to improve health services in Kota-rural Bundi's districts. Shri Birla is committed to developing an action plan for health check-ups in villages, treatment of identified people in big centers, and ambulances at every rural health center.
Kambal Nidhi Abhiyan
The Kambal Nidhi Prakalp assists attendants of patients receiving treatment at M.B.S. Hospital and the New Medical College, Kota, by providing free blankets and mattresses. Shri Om Birla distributes blankets to persons from the poorer sectors of society who are forced to sleep outside during the hard winter in the Kota-Bundi parliamentary seat. Shri Om Birla thinks that service and helping the disadvantaged are part of our tradition.
Sahayak Upkaran Vitran Karyakram
Om Birla launched a unique initiative to empower the differently-abled by providing free motorized cycles (battery-operated), tricycles, wheelchairs, and hearing aids. Shri Om Birla occasionally provides Divyang and Senior Citizens of Kota-Bundi Parliamentary Constituency with aids and appliances. Om Birla feels that it is our communal responsibility to ensure that the disabled and elderly live with dignity. Assistive gadgets were supplied to Divyang and senior folks in Bundi district's Lakheri and Keshoraipatan.
Nishulk Paridhan Uphaar Kendra
Set up the Nishulk Paridhan Uphaar Kendra with public cooperation for distribution of clothes to the poor and needy.
Prasadam
Launched the Prasadam project with collective efforts to provide free food to the underprivileged. The initiative began with a group effort to distribute free food to the disadvantaged.
Medicine Bank
Launched a Medicine Bank project with public cooperation to provide free treatment and medicines to the poor, helpless and needy patients. This project is for providing free medicines for treatment of those who are unable to get treatment due to lack of money. It is still continuing. Public collaboration is being used to deliver free medicines to poor, vulnerable, and needy patients.
Meri Paathshala
Set up a portable school, Meri Paathshala in slums with public cooperation to provide education to children of nomadic and poor families living temporarily in Kuchchi colonies of Urban areas. Set established a mobile school, Meri Paathshala, in slums with public support to educate children from nomadic and poor households.
Matri Gyaan Kendra
Set up various Matru Gyaan Kendra in rural areas under Corporate Social Responsibility (C.S.R) policy and social cooperation to educate both working women and house-wives in rural areas.
Rain Basera
Set constructed modern Rain Baseras (shelter homes) to assist labourers who are forced to sleep on the roadways, with free heaters, beds, mattress-quilts, nutritional meals, and tea.
Azadi ke Swar
Since 2006, has been organizing the historic and patriotic programme Azadi ke Swar on the eve of Independence Day every year to instill patriotism in the common man, particularly the youth, to remember the sacrifices made by the martyrs, and to instill the spirit of nationalism and character building in the new generation. Every year, it is organized as a celebration in Kota (Rajasthan).
Ek Mutthi Ann Rahat Abhiyaan
Ek Mutthi Ann Rahat Abhiyaan, a campaign to provide relief to farmers afflicted by hailstorms, was launched in March 2015. Food grains were collected by walking door to door and distributed to hailstorm-stricken farmers in rural areas.
Other Social Initiatives
Om Birla led the relief team during rescue operations to assist flood victims in Kota city on 15-16 August 2004 and 2019 by providing shelter and medical amenities. Through numerous volunteer and humanitarian groups, Om Birla assisted cancer and thalassemia sufferers.
As Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Rajasthan during 2004- 2008, provided help to the poor, needy and medically serious patients by giving them financial assistance upto Rs. 50 lakh through the State Government.
The Slippers Distribution Campaign was launched in 2007 to ensure that no individual or child suffers from blisters on their feet as a result of the summer's searing heat.
Om Birla established new social programmes by rescuing the floundering Kota District Cooperative Consumer Wholesale Bhandar Limited.
Om Birla led the initiative to reduce malnutrition in the Sahariya tribal region of Rajasthan's Baran District.
Om Birla launched Green Kota Campaign with the collaboration of social, religious and trade organisations to plant one lakh trees in Kota to protect the environment. Saplings, including Tulsi, were distributed to all households.
Outreach
Rin Vitaran Mela (Credit Outreach Program)
On January 8, 2023, a total loan of Rs.1579.56 crore was made available to 33834 people in the Kota Bundi Constituency from the Street Vendors, Small Entrepreneurs, Animal Husbandry, SHG, and other sectors, in collaboration with Nirmala Sitharaman (Union Cabinet Finance Minister). Under the PM SVANidhi Scheme for Street Vendors and the Kisan Pashupalan Credit Card Scheme, the central government will provide loans for self-employment at a much lower interest rate. Farmers will be eligible for loans of up to Rs 1.60 lakh, while street vendors will be eligible for loans of Rs 10,000.
This ushered in a new era of self-sufficiency in the lives of people involved in street vending, small business, animal husbandry, and self-help groups. The purpose of this initiative is to improve people's quality of life by providing loans to the most marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman distributed loan cheques to farmers and street vendors at the loan fair.
Samajh Sansad Ki
On the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE), Lok Sabha Secretariat has organized the Programme ‘Know Your Parliament’ (KYP) - समझ ससंद की. The KYP strives to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India's Independence and the illustrious history of its democratic journey. Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha has initiated this Programme under which various activities are to be organized for the youth of the country. The Programme targets students and youth from various age groups to educate them about the values and principles enshrined in the Constitution of India.
The Programme was launched for students of classes 1st to 12th in the Kota-Bundi District, Rajasthan on 6th September 2022. All participating students were provided an e-Participation Certificate. The winners from classes 6th to 12th were invited to a study visit to the Parliament of India and other significant landmarks in Delhi. The winners were awarded a Certificate of Merit and a memento by PRIDE.
Super Bazar Yojana
As Vice President of the National Cooperative Consumers Federation Limited in New Delhi, Om Birla promoted the Super Bazar Yojana throughout the country.
Uphaar Kendra Yojana
Shri Birla launched the Uphaar Kendra Yojana to supply quality items at inexpensive prices in one location, hence empowering the cooperative movement in the state.
