Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
- Moving and renaming
- Use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the top of the list:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: {{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}} You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code in the {{subst:Catfd2|category name}} |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfd notice}}
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
Notifying substantial contributors to the template
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Closing discussion
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDcloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

Propose merging with Template:Unblock
Reason: To simplify usage of the template, merging the templates would make it easier to maintain and easier to use. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 19:48, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose, probably. [Unblock reviewed] and [Unblock on hold] are part of the recommended workflow for [Unblock]. Merging them would mean changing the unblock workflow, and I'm not sure what technical solution would enable that and if it would be worth it. [Unblocked] survived a 2017 AfD as users were finding it useful. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 20:08, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: It would be easier to judge the feasibility of this proposal if the nominator could mock up a basic sandbox version. I can imagine something like
{{Unblock|on hold}}
that could be changed to{{Unblock|reviewed}}
, but the devil is in the details. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)- I have been doing some testing in the sandbox of Template:Unblock, you can see the testcases for some of the results. There certainly will be more work that needs to be done but yeah. I can see how this will make maintenance a lot easier; instead of maintaining and syncing four different templates we are just maintaining one. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 00:07, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Merge. They have outputs that can be replaced with a single template and accompanying module. Having them split into four templates makes it a little more annoying from the template side of things. Do automated tools use these templates? SWinxy (talk) 20:57, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comment This is a major project. There's more than just unblock; there's unblock-un, unblock-spamun, unblock-auto and all of their reviews. there's very different language for these and very different functionality. It might be a neat trick from the elegance point of view to have a unified theory of unblock templates. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 23:08, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Template:Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa
- Template:Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
- Template:Islamic structures on the Temple Mount (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Propose merging Template:Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa with Template:Islamic structures on the Temple Mount.
These two templates cover the same topic; the "Islamic structures" navbox mostly overlaps with the larger navbox. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:11, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- Merge Islamic structures on the Temple Mount to the Mount and Aqsa navbox as this navbox has a section for Islamic structures in the complex. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 03:16, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: Not sure. This template is not tightly confined to Islamic structures, but instead contains lots of fluff (a problem in its own right) - might it not be better to simply preserve one template as the host for strictly Islamic structures, and the other for more general material (which is what the template here appears to be)? Iskandar323 (talk) 07:30, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: While a merge can be made, the end title will have to be worded as such as it won't be "Islamic" only. A lot of the entries at Template:Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa are Jewish related and not Isalmic. Gonnym (talk) 08:36, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Template:Witchcraft sidebar
This duplicates the content at all the linked templates, and futher confuses the issues currently going on at Witchcraft and Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard#Witchcraft by lumping together and confusing the traditional, global and historical vs neopagan definitions of Witchcraft. For instance it lumps together healers with those who do harm. It's just not needed and is an escalation of an ongoing dispute. See also Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Witchcraft (traditional) started by the same user. - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 00:34, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep - Witchcraft also lumps together healers and Neopagans with those who do harm, but the nominator of this deletion inconsistently opposes correcting the problem in that article. Skyerise (talk) 00:46, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep: It's a useful template for navigating the diverse range of witchcraft-related material. I agree with Skyerise above, and note that what started as ownership of the Witchcraft article, and a hostile WP:BATTLEGROUND mentality, now extends over multiple satellite articles, disambiguation pages, redirects, and templates. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 08:30, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep while there needs to be significant cleanup in the Wicca, Witchcraft, and Paganism navboxes; the majority are footer-boxes. This is one of two side-boxes, the other is explicitly focused on Wicca, which falls within one distinct sub-category. Nominator persists in conflating different subjects without reliable sources and in the face of reliable sources. Darker Dreams (talk) 09:03, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

- "[lumping together very different things under the same name" is exactly what has happened in the article Witchcraft (with its overarching theme of malevolence, which you vigorously defend), Asarlai and CorbieVreccan. Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 11:45, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- The witchcraft article doesn't lump them together as if they're the same. They're mentioned briefly, as they should be...the same way witchcraft (malevolent magic) is mentioned briefly on Neopagan Witchcraft and Wicca, or how Satanism is mentioned briefly on Satan for example. This was discussed (see here) and that was the consensus. – Asarlaí (talk) 18:16, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Exactly. Neopagan redefinitions are only mentioned briefly at Witchcraft for the sake of disambiguation. But because of the choice of some neopagans to call themselves "witches", despite the global and multi-cultural meaning, those interested in the white, western neopagan practices will check out the article. When they don't see what they are looking for, better they see a brief hatnote, and mention that explains the difference and directs them to what they may have been looking for, like Wicca. Without this disambiguation we tend to get confusion and anger on the part of readers, resulting in disruption by angry IPs. - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 20:35, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Template:Template link with numbered parameters
- Template:Template link with numbered parameters (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
This is another template link style template by Grufo with additional functionality that does not appear to actually have a use case. This is completely unused outside of documenting it's own existence, and appears to exist more to find a use for a parameter processing module than serving an actual need.
This template is essentially identical in functionality to {{tlp}}, but it automatically numbers any unnamed parameters and sorts any named parameters alphabetically. The template link style templates are mainly used in internal discussions and documentation, it therefore makes very little sense to be using lua modules to change the ordering or formatting of the parameters - as doccumentation/explanation they should appear as written in the author. The whole point of unnamed parameters is that you can omit the "1=" part of the template argument, so it makes no sense to indiscriminately add the parameter names in documentation. The sorting of named parameters alphabetically is highly unlikely to result in a useful/sensible parameter ordering, e.g. would you demonstrate a time/date processing template with the parameters ordered "Day, Hour, Minute, Month, Second, Year"? This is unused, has features that are not useful and is redundant to other templates - as such it should be deleted. 192.76.8.66 (talk) 02:10, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep:
- “
This is completely unused outside of documenting it's own existence
”:- It could hardly be otherwise, as the template was created less than twenty days ago.
- “
It therefore makes very little sense to be using lua modules to change the ordering or formatting of the parameters
”:- The template's goal is not that of changing the parameter order, but that accompanying unnamed parameters with their positional number in those cases in which that is the wanted result. For proposals concerning minor details such as the order of parameters, the template's talk page might be what you are looking for.
- “
The whole point of unnamed parameters is that you can omit the "1=" part of the template argument
”:- Documentation pages that show the parameter number explicitly in order to avoid confusion have always existed, and especially when the number of unnamed parameters is not small it is a very good thing that they do so. Moreover, writing or not writing a parameter number explicitly carries a series of consequences (such as the way leading and trailing spaces are treated, the way the equals sign is treated, the way other parameters are treated, and so on), and there are cases in which using a number explicitly might not just be an aesthetic choice as you seem to believe.

- --Grufo (talk) 02:42, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Once again, I am asking you to stop with the insults an implications that I don't know what I am talking about. I am well aware that there are cases where the addition of a name changes the behaviour of the parameter - that being the case is only a stronger argument that parameter numbers should be added manually, by the author of the documentation, where they are either actually required or where they demonstrate something useful.
- All of the potential use cases you give can be covered by adding the parameter numbers to the input of {{tlp}} or similar, there is no reason to be adding parameter numbers with LUA. 192.76.8.66 (talk) 03:01, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- “
[...] by adding the parameter numbers to the input of {{tlp}} or similar, there is no reason to be adding parameter numbers with LUA
”: The {{tlp}} template uses Lua as much as {{tlnp}} does. Writing numbers automatically is precisely the ultimate purpose of {{tlnp}} and has few to do with Lua – if you tolerated (strong) limitations this template could be rewritten in pure wikitext as well. Its motivation comes from the fact that writing numbers manually is infamously error-prone. For instance, look at the documentation of {{Module link}}; it contains the following example: {{ml|Example |count_fruit |4=bananas=10 |5=kiwis=5}}, and this clearly contains an error, because the last two parameters should have been |3=bananas=10 and |4=kiwis=5 (I suspect that someone removed a former third parameter containing the word |Fred, as the next example seems to suggest, but I will leave this investigation to you). If not all the cases, at least some cases will become safe from human errors by adopting this template. --Grufo (talk) 03:51, 9 August 2023 (UTC) - You couldn't use this template on that documentation page because the whole point of that line is showing usage of parameter names for parameters that have = signs, the first two parameters should not be numbered. The source code for the documentation should be fixed, rather than trying to retroactively "fix" this in lua. 192.76.8.66 (talk) 09:36, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

These clunky article-section-creation templates were created by an editor who has since been topic-banned from India/Pakistan-related articles, including related individuals, political history, etc.
The editor has also tagged their talk page as being retired from Wikipedia since October 2022, so it is unlikely that they will ever be used again, if they were ever used. Unless another editor shows up here to let us know that they are actively using these templates to create articles, we should delete them. Template:Template link with sorted parameters
- Template:Template link with sorted parameters (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
I fail to see any situations where this template would be useful, it seems like this template was made because the creator figured out that you can mess around with template parameters in lua, rather than because it actually solves a problem or addresses a need.
This is basically the template link with parameters {{tlp}} template, but where the parameters are automatically alphabetized with LUA prior to being displayed. I don't see how this extra functionality is actually useful. These template link templates are used primarily for displaying snippets of wikitext as part of discussions and documentation, in those situations you would want to display the template exactly as you wrote it out. Even if automatic sorting of parameters was a good idea "alphabetical" is highly unlikely to be a sensible choice for most templates, would you display a date formatting template's parameters in the order "Day, Hour, Minute, Month, Second, Year"? The use case in on the template's documentation page seems contrived to say the least, where is "this template accepts four unnamed parameters, I've given them numbered identifiers in a ridiculous order and now need a template to sort them as part of a documentation page" ever going to occur? 192.76.8.66 (talk) 19:15, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep. This is one of those cases where in lack of a deep understanding of how wikitext parameters work the poster IP address relied on the template's title as the only source of information. The {{tlap}} template is simply a more general form of the {{tlp}} template that adds the feature that editors don't need to escape the equals sign (i.e.
{{=}}
). If equals signs are escaped this template behaves exactly like {{tlp}}. Yet, the possibility of not escaping the equals sign has a cost: in wikitext the order of named parameters is always lost (there is no way to reconstruct it), and that is why we have an alphabetical order with named parameters – and that is also why the template has its current name. The template's title does not tell us that “ordering parameters” is the template's main task, the template's title simply reminds us that we always lose the order of named parameters. What should one do if they write their parameters already in alphabetical order? They should definitely use this template unless they want to escape the equals sign! Compare writing
- {{tlap
|Example |christmas=tree |foo=bar |hello=world}}
- {{tlap
- with writing
- {{tlp
|Example |christmas{{=}}tree |foo{{=}}bar |hello{{=}}world}}
- {{tlp
- The only case in which {{tlap}} becomes useless is when users for whatever reason do not want an alphabetical order (the date above could be a good example). But even in that case, {{tlap}} can be used with escaped equals and it will behave like {{tlp}}. --Grufo (talk) 21:52, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- What you've said here directly contradicts the documentation you wrote. If the purpose of the template isn't to sort parameters then why did you call this "Template link with sorted parameters" and tell people on the documentation page that they should not escape the equals sign in parameters so the template sorts them.
- This deletion nomination has nothing to do with me apparently lacking a
lack of a deep understanding of how wikitext parameters work
(I do understand how templates work, thank you very much) I nominated it for deletion because it is useless, a sentiment shared by another editor here. If you use the template with non-escaped equals signs as you describe in the documentation page it mangles the input and puts the parameters in an unhelpful order, if you use it with escaped equals signs as you describe above it duplicates the function of another template. "This can save you from typing brackets as long as you always type your template parameters in alphabetical order" is a niche use case in the extreme. 192.76.8.66 (talk) 22:56, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

- Delete And I've reverted the improper striking out of this nomination. We already have enough templates for formatting template invocations - we don't need yet more ways of doing the same thing. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:00, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- If your only concern is that “
we already have enough templates for formatting template invocations
” then let's delete {{tlp}} and make it a redirect to this template, because this is the more general form in which the {{tlp}}-like usage is only a particular case. Doing so will have no effects whatsoever on the pages that already use {{tlp}}, as these already escape the equals sign (the parameter order will be preserved). On the other hand, if someone misused {{tlp}} and forgot to escape the equals sign, then the redirect will restore the lost parameters – and I am pretty sure such errors exist in the vastity of Wikipedia. --Grufo (talk) 01:15, 9 August 2023 (UTC)- I would strongly disagree with that proposal. {{tlp}} is a widely used template with a simple, well tested Lua module backend. This template is completely unused outside of documenting it's own existence, it has a complex Lua module behind it which is unfinished, and no one has made a good case for the "automatic sorting of named parameters" functionality actually being useful. 192.76.8.66 (talk) 01:42, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- “
No one has made a good case for the "automatic sorting of named parameters" functionality actually being useful
”: Again you show poor understanding of wikitext parameters. If you do not sort named parameters in some way (not necessarily alphabetically) their order will change randomly with each refresh of the page cache. Therefore the alternative is between showcasing named parameters sorted somehow and not showcasing them at all. --Grufo (talk) 01:58, 9 August 2023 (UTC)- No, I fully understand how it works and what is going on here, please stop with the "you show poor understanding" insults. "named parameters don't contain positional data" is fairly basic template knowledge. The proper alternative is that you escape the parameters you give as input to {{tlp}}, as we have been doing for years, and end up with output where the parameters are sanely ordered. 192.76.8.66 (talk) 02:08, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

In that particular case, it is possible that the parameter list is already in the "Usage" section of the template documentation, but I haven't done a bit-for-bit comparison of each list. The creator of these pages made things overly complicated, and trying to read that editor's mind to try to figure out why and how they did the things they did never did work for me. - Just checked. They are unused because user:Gonnym subst them into the docs a few days ago, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Chembox_Structure/doc&diff=prev&oldid=1169231846 Christian75 (talk) 09:31, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking. FYI, if I am interpreting your comment correctly, it might help you to know that a contentious editor who liked to discuss every change to templates over which they perceived ownership has been indefinitely banned. You may be able to modify (and simplify, ideally) the Chembox templates without running into as much resistance. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:51, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

- {{Chembox Explosive/doc/parameter list}} should be transcluded or just copy/pasted into {{Chembox Explosive/doc}}, as I suggested in my nomination. They left behind hundreds of unused and abandoned template pages, so it's going to take some teamwork to figure out how to deal with them. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:17, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

- Comment - There's quite a few of these, so perhaps this nomination should be expanded in scope. SounderBruce 05:10, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- I had missed that. I can if that's desirable, but it should probably be a new nom and maybe only after this one completes. Izno (talk) 05:26, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- The other thing I'm thinking about is whether I'd prefer these to be split off from the very large template to begin with. While I nominated this, I think there's a reasonable alternative path which is splitting the team season articles away from the big template. I'm a fan of navboxes which serve as constellations rather than everything in one navbox, because that way lies big navbox. Izno (talk) 17:43, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- I had missed that. I can if that's desirable, but it should probably be a new nom and maybe only after this one completes. Izno (talk) 05:26, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- Keep Not a duplicate. This is specific to MLS and the rest in the men's soccer navbox includes a lot outside of the MLS. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 03:02, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- By that logic, you would have to nominate all the soccer/football leagues in the U.S. that have a navbox for the current season that are linked in the 2023 in American men's soccer navbox. And then nominate all the previous season's navboxes as well. Perhaps there needs to be a broader discussion about templates such as 2023 in American men's soccer which encompasses all links already featured in other navboxes. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:31, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, that's the implication of my comment at 17:43. Starting the discussion with this nomination is as good as any. Izno (talk) 17:38, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Right. But I don't think MLS season navboxes have any reason to be deleted. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 17:42, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- So you think we should split up the large navbox instead and/or remove the content in those templates? The content is strictly duplicated, so one of them should go. Izno (talk) 17:47, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. We need a larger discussion involving the Football project. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 19:54, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

- Keep The solution is simple and would be in line with other sports. The American soccer navbox should link the leagues. No team articles should be included. The team articles should be separated into their league specific navbox. This goes for prior years as well.-UCO2009bluejay (talk) 21:16, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

- Delete Fairly useless templates created as part of an article semi-automatic production system for India constituency articles, see Template:MLABIO/doc. These templates are not useful and their function doesn't make a lot of sense - you delete a header in an article, and replace it with a substitution of this template, which puts the header back along with some unbalanced section tags, see also the related TFD for a template that replaced a references header with a references header [6]. The creator is topic banned from Indian politics, hasn't edited in months and this whole nest of templates is so poorly documented, confusing and generally useless that I doubt anyone else is ever going to use them. @Jonesey95: There's a whole range of these for different years, do you want to bundle these into the nomination? see Special:PrefixIndex/Template:INCONSTTOP and Special:PrefixIndex/Template:INCONSTBOT 192.76.8.66 (talk) 20:40, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Template:European Para Championships
- Template:European Para Championships (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
2023 is the first occurrence of this event, and as such, there are not enough blue links to warrant a template anytime soon. There are 2 links, and we generally require around 5 for a valid template, which is unlikely to happen until 2035 (as the Championships is once every 4 years). Both articles listed are linked to each other in the articles anyway, and so this template is not needed until such a time as there are enough links to justify a template. Template:Consensus
- Template:Consensus (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
This duplicates the function either of {{rfc}}, if you go by the documentation (This template can be used on talk pages to introduce discussions about a page or topic for which the objective is to reach consensus.
), or of {{FAQ}}, if you check the actual uses where it describes what the consensus is. Should be converted to one of those and then deleted. Izno (talk) 16:26, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- I disagree with this, but perhaps I am just confused. Can you clarify how this would work for the talk page Talk:January 6 United States Capitol attack? On that page, Consensus is used to discuss multiple actions with the majority of the list being the current consensus on a number of topics and the rest being a few lines regarding arbitration enforcement. I don't see RfC being a useable substitute and I have some doubts about FAQ being a reasonable substitute for the talk page. --Super Goku V (talk) 05:23, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- That case is the use case for {{FAQ}}. It doesn't need a little person on the left and a template named "consensus" to be used to indicate the current consensus. Izno (talk) 17:17, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- I get that the icon doesn't really work for the arbitration enforcement lines, but I don't understand how FAQ would work. The FAQ template to me is more when the same question has been asked multiple times on a talk page and has a question and answer format based on the questions asked and the responses given. For the use of the Consensus template at the Jan 6 talk page, it is eight statements about seven active actions and one inactive action from various past discussions. I don't think it is as simple as switching the template from Consensus to FAQ, even if it is possible. (If that is what you are suggesting to do, it doesn't look right on Chrome. All of the text gets bolded and centered as all of the lines are treated as unlabeled questions.) --Super Goku V (talk) 23:12, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- That case is the use case for {{FAQ}}. It doesn't need a little person on the left and a template named "consensus" to be used to indicate the current consensus. Izno (talk) 17:17, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep. I disagree that the template is replaceable with the FAQ template. With the Jan 6th talk page for example, I don't think the formatting would be as effective. SWinxy (talk) 19:34, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose as proposed I highly disagree that any random template should be replaced with RFC in any cases. The RFC Template should only be used with RFCs, it clearly announces its purpose as an RFC template. Marking any random discussion as an RFC is wrong. I don't see how this overlaps with FAQ either. -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 10:54, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep per Swinxy. The two templates appear to have genuinely different scope, and the use of red for deletion formatting as opposed to the yellow for the RfC seems apt. If it ain't broke.... — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 14:22, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

There are many reasons for this, but one of them is that some editors grant more social capital
to admins, affording their comments greater weight even when they are not acting as an admin. For example, during the recent RfA that prompted this proposal, Femke said the impact of coming across as curt will be larger due to the social capital of the mop
, and other users, particularly Barkeep49, also reflected on this aspect.
One method to address this is to reduce the visibility of admins; to make it less likely that editors will realize that one or more of the editors they are discussing with is an admin. I am proposing these deletions to do exactly that, as these are some of the most prominent indicators that an editor is an admin.
I haven't tagged Template:User wikipedia/Administrator due to it being template protected. BilledMammal (talk) 11:54, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Speedy keep: Not a valid reason to delete, administrators should be allowed to have the topicon and userbox to be more easily identified as an administrator. By your logic we should delete CAT:ADMINS, the other admin userboxes and ban administrators from identifying themselves as one on their userpage and user talk page. It is better for users to know whether a user is an admin or not. Lightoil (talk) 12:40, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
By your logic we should delete CAT:ADMINS, the other admin userboxes and ban administrators from identifying themselves as one on their userpage and user talk page.
Partially, you are right; I've added the other admin userboxes to the nomination. However, I don't believe that the rest, that we should delete CAT:ADMINS and ban administrators from identifying themselves on their user page, follows from my logic. The goal isn't to make admins invisible; it's to take simple steps, that don't have any real adverse impact, to make admins less visible. Removing userboxes and topicons meet that requirement; removing categories (particularly useful categories, like Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to provide copies of deleted articles), or banning admins from self-identifying, do not. BilledMammal (talk) 13:25, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

- Strongest keep possible Highly used template, no valid reasons for deletion. Also identifying who's an admin or whatnot makes it easier to ask an admin for help if needed. — Prodraxis {talk • contribs} (she/her) 13:57, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Per ancient law, user boxes must be nominated at WP:MFD, not WP:TFD (seriously, I don't make the rules). See WP:TFD#How to use this page. That said, on the merits, this probably is not a very good nomination per the above among others, though I respect the boldness. Izno (talk) 16:20, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- I will cast a !vote to redirect the 2 variant templates. We don't need two ways to say I'm an admin in a user box. There's probably a second adjustment to remove the "since" variations as well by merging to an appropriate user box the functionality for since. Izno (talk) 16:29, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep, but redirect the dupes like Izno said: I couldn't agree more with the spirit of the nomination, but it really is helpful to know whether someone's an admin. Also it sorts them into Category:Wikipedia administrators, which they might not do manually. Heavy Water (talk • contribs) 19:15, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Doing this is beyond what I have the patience to figure out how to do correctly on a Sunday after 3 minutes of instruction staring but I believe this discussion should be moved over to MfD which is, as Izno notes, the correct place to have a discussion about infoboxes. Barkeep49 (talk) 20:04, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ugh, I would help try to move it over, but it would get pretty ugly since Template:Administrator topicon is also part of the nomination, and that is not a userbox. I would almost rather invoke WP:IAR and keep it here. Mz7 (talk) 21:09, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- It wouldn't be the first time we've assessed user boxes directly here because someone didn't know. If we keep it here, I would suggest a note at WT:MFD and/or a "formal" but without content filing on WP:MFD itself, pointing users here.
- As for how I would list it if instead we go that way, I'd make an MFD just for the user boxes, copy the comments so far over there, and then remove the user boxes from this nom, potentially with an archive top/bot but inviting further discussion below, since most users who have responded here have mostly focused on the user boxes I think (given their quantity). Propose merging Template:Round in circles with Template:Archives.
This is just an archives search box with a blurb saying that people like to argue a lot, and most article talk pages have an article search box. They don't need two of them. And for truly contentious articles there is Template:Contentious topics which should be used. In the ongoing effort to clean up the talk pages with redundant and unnecessary banner templates, this one should be merged. Rreagan007 (talk) 06:06, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Template:CT is not for casual use. Round in circles can be used anywhere. There may be value to deleting RIC but that's not a good reason.
- As for the search box, I think removing that makes sense, then it's reduced to a basic "don't do that". I think we might have an alternative to that lying around, but we should probably identify that before nomination (or definitely know that such exists). Izno (talk) 16:18, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- {{controversial}} and {{calm}} might be feasible "one line mention" merge targets. Instead of a whole template, just a "try not to repeat yourself" directive in one of those might be sufficient. Izno (talk) 16:22, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Those two talk banners seem more than adequate. Rreagan007 (talk) 06:18, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

- Delete – Other templates exist already that don't pointlessly recreate an archives search. This is the kind of banner that takes up space and as a result causes people to read nothing on the talk page. Aza24 (talk) 05:57, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Don't merge since no valid rationale for merging has been given. Summer talk 13:57, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep. The nominator makes a great argument for removing the archives search box, but no argument at all for deleting the template. It conveys a useful point, and its role in doing so is not duplicated by other templates (for example, contentious-topic banners are restricted to formal contentious topics). jp×g 23:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep nominator hadn’t provided a rationale why this template with 5000 transclusions needs to be deleted. It’s not the same as the contentious topics banner and the search bar can just be removed. WP:NOTCLEANUP applies to templates too. Dronebogus (talk) 15:14, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep It's perfectly fine as is. ~ HAL333 01:09, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Merge make the warning a subtemplate, and a plain box without the search, that attaches above the archivebox search box and TALKHEADER. Similar to how BLP and BLPO attaches above WPBS -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 11:00, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep. There is a good difference in stylistic choice between the two templates, and we should leave users free to make that stylistic choice. Additionally, it has a purpose that the archives themselves don't: to explicitly note where previous discussions have been especially tedious. This can be used on paces that are well outside of the {{Contentious topics}} scope (i.e. not subject to arbitration restrictions), so the nominator's argument that this is entirely redundant seems to be made in error. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 14:20, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep. Useful template which has and has always had a |search=no parameter. CLYDE TALK TO ME/STUFF DONE 00:34, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Template:Mitragyna speciosa
- Template:Mitragyna speciosa (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Navbox with one transclusion and many redlinks. The only transclusion is kratom which has recently been split from Mitragyna speciosa. I suggest deleting this template. The links are chemical compounds found in kratom/Mitragyna speciosa. If the template is kept, it should be renamed in some way: "Chemicals in kratom" "Phytochemistry of Mitragyna speciosa, or something else. Plantdrew (talk) 03:56, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Keep Still meets the rule of thumb for navigation for the number of links despite one use. Renaming is not of concern of this Tfd unless it's a merger discussion which this isn't. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:46, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Delete. If we break down chemical compounds found in all plants and add these to navboxes, we will have an insane amount of navboxes. If these are notable for this specific plant unlike in other plants, that is a different thing, but I see no evidence of that. As such this navbox is basically one valid link. Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Izno (talk) 16:48, 2 August 2023 (UTC)- It may make sense to de-template *all* the charts simultaneously, but that is a lot of work. The templates have made it easy to find these for doing edits that should be applied to all of them. Spitzak (talk) 16:53, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- No, it doesn't make sense to do that. Many of the Unicode charts are transcluded in multiple places, so they couldn't be de-templated without an absolute mess on our hands. And then we'd be back where we were a dozen years ago where this content was an absolute nightmare to update and maintain. Working out how to end that living nightmare is how we came to have this exhaustive and cohesive set of Unicode chart templates. I vehemently oppose subst-ing any Unicode block template, let alone all of them. We still have a lot of potential development of these templates, not to mention regular yearly updates, and scattering them to the winds is a terrible idea. - Oppose: It's working as is. Templates exist for each Unicode block already, and this eliminates the need to have to copy and paste the same table over and over again. Deleting this template breaks this consistency. DASL51984 (Speak to me!) 23:06, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

- Comment what about Module:Unicode chart ? -- 67.70.25.80 (talk) 15:58, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- That module has multiple editors in good standing, and even more talk page contributors. It's a bit moribund right now, but I will try to make a push at WP:WikiProject Writing systems to see if we can't get it fully up on its feet. It would actually be a huge development in terms of being able to present Unicode on Wikipedia, and a tremendous help to maintenance. VanIsaac, GHTV contWpWS 18:36, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

- This should either be converted into a template wrapper for
{{#invoke:Unicode chart}}
, or made a redirect to that module. Since the module would realistically be used almost exclusively in category:Unicode Blocks, I'm not sure whether the template wrapper is really necessary or not. So I'm just going to be WP:BOLD and refactor this into a wrapper for the module, but would support converting to a redirect between namespaces as well if that's what people think would be best. VanIsaac, GHTV contWpWS 18:32, 2 August 2023 (UTC) - Keep (as the wrapper Vanisaacc created) - template-to-module namespace redirects are generally a bad idea since trying to transclude one will result in the raw code being displayed rather than the module being invoked. I see no further reason to use TfD to interfere with Vanisaac's project. * Pppery * it has begun... 17:46, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
